An election is a "stimulus package"? I don't like to use this emoticon, but I have had to use it twice in a row when normally solid posters, start stretching and grasping for straws. In the meantime. 69 votes, coalition forces in the lead. Harper still stronger then any other leadership choice. DION gets bump, leads Iggy after announcement. Jack and Duceppe get small bounce. RAE is in dudsville. Liberals are rallying around Dion, sad sad sad.

Why should Harper hide with his tail between his legs for 8 weeks? Why should we wait 8 weeks for an election? How does ANY of those TWO options make things better for Canada. Perhaps, Harper should 1) Resign and let someone else lead the CPC. 2) Hand over government to the coalition with dignity and approach the GG in order to avoid another unnecessary election. I see no benefit to the economy, for Prime Minister Harper to pull a DION and turtle for 8 weeks. Anyone seen Revenge of the Nerds? Priceless.

That's the problem Bill. Although you have political views, you are not a party hack, even if your views are WILD. It troubles me to speak to politicians or hacks and they have no grasp of what is happening in the real world. It couldn't be more clear then watching this fiasco, the spin, counterspin, etc. PS you did know I was jerking your chain on the ETR Right

I can't beleive I am agreeing with BC Chick and Kimmy in one post. BC Chick. I appreciate your candidness regarding Dion. Kimmy. I think that the LPC will have to figure a way to hide Dion from the public. As for your splitviews on the coalition. Only Harper could have made something so implausible happen. Whether you agree or disagree with the coalition or like or dislike it, it is too late now. Yet everything said is true and factual. Canadians are going to wear this, and all the elected officials are responsible for their actions at the end of the day. Now, I just watched Dion on TV again. Please make it stop. Please.

The coalition will go to the polls in 2011. And if you found 3 coalitions in the UK, you have found Precedent. -

The BQ has simply switched sides. If the BQ were not to support the Coalition of the LPC/NDP, then the CPC would be happy to have their "Support". In the meantime, the CPC can't even get the support of a former Conservative MP/sitting independent. This is very bad for Harper. -
Harper is going to lose the confidence vote. Put a fork in him. Every vote counts.

Wasn't that the intent with the removal of election financing? To put the final nail in the coffin? The LPC have nothing to lose going for it. They could have found a much better choice then Dion, but its the LPC. You can't expect alot. If it is the end, so be it. It could well be the end of Stephen Harper and his new strategic advisor from the Mike Harris era. This can only be described as a battle between dumb and dumber fighting for their political lives.

A) People will freak if there is an election. The CPC would lose seats in Quebec. Its what the CPC want, because it would likely stave off defeat. I don't know how many seats they held within the Striking range outside Quebec, but it wouldn't matter, the CPC are either going to lose government, or risk losing an election. They would choose the Latter over the former.

Well said. -
The people don't want anyone to come to them with another election. More waste, more delay. Its a non starter, unless the GG rejects the coalition. Should be interesting.

144 yup 144 yup. 3. Majority of Canadians had voted for the Conservatives! Nope. The Majority voted for ABC, but the CPC did get lots of valuable votes. yup Nope  No, nor is it a coup attempt as nothing has yet happened. This is democracy in action. Why has Harper dissolved parliment? Currently he is the Prime Minister and currently holds the confidence of the house. For how much longer is uncertain. But definitely, the GG would have to have good reason to choose an election over the will of the majority in parliment. Historical precendent would support the coalition. I would drop that argument, If I were you. They did, just a few weeks back, and the parliment is working to make certain there is confidence in the house and no unnecessary election. too little to late. Apparenty the Government has chosen to abandon virtually everything they presented, and have no confidence in parliment. The Harper government could promise golden monkeys to everyone, and it still looks like no one would believe them. Harpers biggest contribution to Canadian History could be the installation of Lame Duck Dion, the worst performing Liberal Leader in the History of the party, to the position of Prime Minister. That is how pathetically Harper has messed this up. He is managed to give up parliment to a party in the condition you described. Legally and with the blessing of the people. Oh Joy or Bliss. -

To put the scope of Harpers defeat in historical context Who will win..... THE BIGGEST LOSER DION VS TURNER ----- DION HARPER VS CLARK..... TUNE IN NEXT WEEK to see if Prime Minister Harper can surpass Joe Clarks historic record of strategic incompetence. CANADAs BIGGEST LOSER And what is the Common Factor in both the CLARK government and the HARPER government? BOB RAE. Will he once again be the pitch boy for the defeat of an inept Conservative Government. Is there someting about Bob Rae in Federal Parliment that challenges the counting abilities of Conservative Prime Ministers. Will Stephen Harper put on his Wil E Coyote ACME HAT or will he get hit by the Runaway Train driven by Road Runner Rae. Find out this and more...... on CANADAS BIGGEST LOSER Seriously Kimmy. I am not disagreeing with what you are saying. It just isn't going to make a difference in what transpires in the next week. We are all going to watch this unfold and papers are going to make alot of money. Great Ads for christmas and increased sales at the newstands:)

It's hard to believe how much money was wasted before the storm. It's like they spent money for snowplowing in June and don't know what to do now that the snow is falling. Paul Martin, Frank McKenna, Roy Romanov, and John Manley..... The coalition is deadly serious affair. Put these names against Flaherty and he doesn't have a wing and a Prayer. Its going to be a rough week for the CPC. Nothing they are throwing is sticking beyond the base. Notable in this is still the lack of a leader. I suggest you get on your network and make certain that DION steps aside for the good of the country, let alone the coalition. THis guy is POISON on the streets. The Economic Stimulus package is now OWNED by the LPC/NDP coalition and is being announced across the Country. The CPC haven't produced one, and are going to look like Johny Come Latelys. That is not good. The only thing the CPC have been able to do is attack. That will not keep power. PS (can we not find 3 more anti coalition votes?)

Mysterious websites want Baird, Prentice for leader
madmax replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
A press release was sent out by the John Baird website claiming that it is supported by a "group composed (of) over nearly 100 members from across the country, including two (2) Members of Parliament and one (1) Senator - who have requested (to) remain anonymous." -
The problem is no more about Funding or an economic plan to the crises. All the best plans are laid to waste if you do not have the confidence of the house. The Prime Minister could lose the confidence of the house, and appears set to do so. He has already backtracked, postponed economic forecasts, is suggesting to postpone parliment. This is not a person exuding confidence but avoiding defeat. Similar to Paul Martin when he shunted the NDP, and Harper already had the BQ in his back pocket. The coalition is a benefit to avoid a costly election during a crises and allows the government to perform its duty to Canada. Responsible Government. Something that, if you have followed the actions of the Prime Minister decided to abandon Responsible government for Political advantage. Considering that the LPC hasn't collapsed this far into it, indicates to me the current Conservative run government will be unable to function and replaced by a LPC/NDP coalition. Can the CPC get BQ support? Can the CPC entice the LPC to support its Government? Can the CPC get the support of the NDP? Can the CPC get the LPC to become absent in the house? The answer appears to be no, and therefore no confidence. It doesn't matter if Harper planned to pave roads with gold, put billions into industry, give billions in tax cuts and elimate the GST completely. Nobody trusts him. That is not good.
