Direct voting wouldn't have changed anything regarding Iraq. The public wanted nothing to do with it. As for Afghanistan, we were there 23 months prior to the American invasion of Iraq. So, the public was more acceptable to the Afghan missions long before the fear of participating in Iraq. The Canadian Government under both Martin and later Harper both felt the fear of participating in Iraq. Harper "the Iraq war supporter", got an out of having to deal with the Iraq mess because the previous LPC committment to the Kandahar region gave him an excuse to not follow through. So, I agree with you that Afghanistan was a ticket to save face, but that it existed as an option before and after the invasion of Iraq. I just don't believe that if the public had a direct vote on going to war, that a government should put aside all intelligence, threats or moral responsibility if the need to go to war is of national security or to defend those who are in need.

Then it wouldn't be welfare, but a glorified EI program and insurance program like Comp. No thanks.....

The UN has accomplished more then our Senate Seriously, the UN is the great punching bag, and as long as the UN remains a punching bag then it is neither irrellavent or a failure. The UN is not the be all and end all. But do not discount that among the highly publicized and sometimes horrific failures of the UN there are also many successes. Also do not discount that the US is the largest participant in the UN and when they do not wish to support or participate in an action or cause or back it up, the teeth of the UN turn to gums rather quickly. However, look at the success of UNSCOM in disarming Iraqs of WMD. It wasn't easy, their lives were at risk and they got the job done, regardless of the criticism from both Iraq and the US and the UK.

Apparently Video Professor is well aware that he resembles Jack Layton. So, after another catty remark from the CPC spinmeister, I found it amusing that in the comments section is a posting from the Video Professor in the US. While being good mannered, and even with a slight knowledge of the NDP from some of his team members living in Vancouver, he provides a link to his own political views in the US and on deficits etc. Its a good read from someone that we poke fun at to poke fun at someone else.... Powers knows everything in case you missed the comment portion.... Video Professor Link Fixed Its a good read....

IIRC things tightened up at the end of the decade and followed somewhat in the early 80s. I believe some was a result of the boycott of products to the USSR over their invasion of Afghanistan. Shortly after the need for Combines and such declined dramatically both out west and in foreign exports.

Why Are We Deporting Iraq War Resisters?
madmax replied to gordiecanuk's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Some people can't handle the slaughter of children and poor people for a war that is morally offensive and the result of simple naked agression. To do your time, come back and then have the conflict settle in, is mentally challenging to the best. Many people returning from combat behave quite differently and view the world in a different manner. For some, the only thing that works is to turn the brain off and get back into the action. For others it is another difficult prospect. If you believe in contracts, then you believe in the rule of law. The US and its coalition partners rush to Iraqi oil fields and ministrys challenges the best of intentions, good will and international relations. The only difference between today and the 60s and 70s is that many of the recruits were drafted. However, that does overlook that many draft dodgers of that era also served time in Vietnam. The Military is full of little tricks and rules, and catch 22 isn't just a book. Many soldiers were lied to for their reasons to participate and enlist. They had been tricked by their government for the current administrations policy goals. Many soldiers believed they were going overseas for the security of their country, and many believed that they would be back home in months, not years. People were recalled as well, who also believed they had received their get out of jail free cards. The Military isn't for everyone. You can't know what is going on in this persons head. Many people join looking for a home, friends, or can't find a lifestyle that suits them in Civy clothes. But I find it more difficult to read comments from people who have never worn a military uniform, let alone been anywhere near a combat zone or seen a war upclose and personal. Come back and pass judgement M.Dancer after you have killed. In the meantime, governments must follow due process and we must accept or change what choices governments make. I personally wouldn't have want someone uncommitted covering my back or thinking of fragging me or others to get out of something that they haven't the stomach for. To much Gung Ho can get you chemical coffees. -
Always hang around the guys in stores 3.1 a is a requirement that the Canadian operations can implement. If not in Ontario, the facility in quebec can meet this spec. That said, it is smoke and mirrors to suggest this couldn't be made in the Ontario operations. End of the day, this is how the game is made. We give money to large corps and they choose where it goes. The stipulation that these be made in Canada would not be out of line and would have a cost benefit. Regardless, the parts required to go on the vehicle are as likely to come from Canadian Parts suppliers, as any other location.

He is a failed amateur politician. I don't believe he is professional vigilante or a vigilante at all. He did speak out loudly and boldly in favour of paying the land developer a huge sum of money, and lobbied the public to make certain that the land developer got a substantial figure. A figure envied by every other land developer lining up at the trough. It was clear from the get go, that he was behaving like a Liberal Hack and in the interests of a Land Developer who had laid the groundwork for a sweetheart deal prior to the development (IIRC). Don't forget this stuff

I find the immigration arguments interesting. Many immigrants are interested in leaving Canada for better opportunities. Many born Canadians are leaving Canada for better opportunities. It isn't a crises situation but it is certainly a trend which is going to continue. Why come to Canada for low paying employment and a high cost of living? Why stay in Canada? I am working with Indian owned companies that want to take skilled Canadians, and semi skilled equipment operators overseas to set up and work on the equipment that there own labour market is not trained for but will be capable of doing. It reminds me of the English invasion of the 80s. When Thatcher started the de industrialization of UK industries, the equipment came to Canada. 1000s of UK workers came over and stayed here to operate the equipment and train Canadian workers.

This has been in the works for at least 2 years. Considering that both McCain and Obama's full intent was to close the cuban facility, the prisoners have to go somewhere and logic would dictate that they would be returned to their country of origin (citizenship). I find all the harsh comments hilarious. Its like they want to complain while keeping their head in the sand. Many of those held in Cuba were released, back to the UK, Australia etc, where they were free the moment they set foot on their home country. If the US isn't interested in charging and convicting, what other government would waste the effort?

nonsense... Hamas wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the occupation. Hamas grew as an alternative to the PLO which became corrupted by the riches of peace and lost the confidence of the people. Like many..... people turn to religion in search of an answer. Israel had lost interest in negotiating or even humouring the PLO (A) . A solution was required and many found support from their religion. Hama s provided the best social services of all the different groups and Hamas eventually rivaled the PLO in strength. Isael continued to pound, and undermine the PLO, then switch and eliminate a Hamas leader for the PLO and back and forth it went. Hamas is on the record for the destruction of Israel, and that is a sticking point in any peace process. However, in the vein of "Only Nixon can go to China" it will have to be Hamas that reigns in their rockets. Arafat was a "terrorist" who succeeded in getting recognition to Palestinians, who weren't recognised by anyone including Arab states. Eventually he gained authority to govern or an unconfirmed boundary. Hamas grew because of the complete failure of the peace process. After 30 years of occupation and children growing up to be middle age men in an environment where they know nothing else is a recipe for disaster. The new youth looked to religion as a solution, and the religious groups were there waiting to gain followers. Hamas views and recruits through the advocation of holy war. It is their responsibility to defend their families, relatives and muslims through jihad. Hamas can also choose peace.

Don't get into the fire... if you can't take the heat. You want to play the Israeli Palestinian game, grow a thick skin. No matter who tackles this subject or from what angle, the potential to get burned is high. You flame, expect flames in return.

Ontario Teachers Federation and Dalton McGuinty
madmax replied to ironstone's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Wow, you can find people to teach and instruct between $9.75 and $15.00. As a supplier of training to a corporation a fee of $1,000 to 4,000/day is not unusual. But you sure as hell don't pay the instructor this amount. Do not mistake a consultant for an instructor. that is a fair number of teachers who have achieved a Masters Degree and 15 years of service. Regardless in the public school ELEMENTARY system you can earn $94,000. They deserve what the public is willing to pay them for their work performed. The mere fact that you suggest that teachers are "smart" people leads one to suggest that those who don't teach are stupid. Teachers have great difficulty earning a living in a field outside of teaching. Take them out of the classroom and things go downhill .... quickly.... for the vast majority. Teaching is made to sound like it is a very difficult job. Many teachers haven't spent anytime in any other field or industry to compare their profession to another. Teachers need a reality check. They receive an excellent pay check and have superior working conditions. They should thank their lucky stars for the position they are in. But the gravy train cannot go on forever. And yes, there jobs and cushy and anyone I know who has went into teaching from another field, really enjoys the work, the students (not all, and every class), and particularly the comfy hours of work and time off. There are only a few times each term/semester that they have to put in a few extra hours. It's a good life, good profession and Excellent pay, benefits, pensions and holidays. Do not embelish the hardship of the teaching profession. Life is good..... -

Keep it up Bill. There are many youthful and stupid people who believe they have it all figured out. You are doing the right thing for the right reasons.
