  1. Good point. Got this link still havn't found anything on Canada The United States invests approximately $16,700 to find a cure for each life lost to prostate cancer; more than $21,800 for each life lost to breast cancer, and about $160,000 for each life lost to AIDS. We know this disease is contagious, and we know how to avoid getting it. Life style changes would accomplish what no amount of funding will. http://underscorebleach.net/jotsheet/2004/...-cancer-funding
  2. It doesn't make sense that they would be trying to resell cell phones anyone can buy at Walmart; why would anyone pay more for a cell phone on the blackmarket. Maybe there were not actually been planning an attack themselves, and if not, then they could have been supplying other terrorists with them.
  3. Thing is, most Muslims around the world aren't "hateful of western culture and democracy". They want a piece of the action and have become frustrated that their own defeatism, the corruption of their leaders, and with the west's support of that corruption. So they are turning to the force that promises a return to the good old days when Islam was the dominant and civilizing force in the world. You want to beat that? Give them a better option and find a way to help them get there that doesn't involve invading or bombing them. I'm not sure I agree with that, the decadence and social decay doesn't sit well with them. Look at Norway Norway: The Multiculturalist Paradise "Norwegian women must take their share of responsibility for these rapes" because their manner of dress would be regarded by Muslim men as inappropriate. "Norwegian women must realize that we live in a multicultural society and adapt themselves to it." Thus spaketh a Professor at the University of Oslo, where the problem of gang-rape has been growing in recent years. This is what modern day "liberalism" has sunk to in the name of tolerance. All on the grounds that we must "understand other cultures and not impose our values on them." There is a clear pattern evolving here, something that creates the enemy within: young Muslim men who are generally from middle class families, not the poor. They are being radicalised after exposure to extreme Islamist elements in their communities or from trips to Pakistan or other M.E. countries.where are taught an evil brew of Islamic fundamentalism and anti-western propaganda The modernized western countries they live in have allowed crime and social decay to run rampant, which alienates many Muslims who are taught that they are living in a disgusting society which obviously deserves to be attacked or bombed etc.
  4. HIV is one of a number of auto-immune diseases. When research is done on HIV, it also has applicable material for other viruses, cancer, etc. Scientists say that any money spent on research on the immune system benefits us all. True, but funding for AIDS does seem to be higher proportionatly to other killer diseases. BTW, I don't think Paul Martin ever attended an aids conference. this is really a non issue; simply a venue to use as a political weapon.
  5. I don't have the link right now, but there was something yesterdaym, will try to find it. Figures from Stats. Canada do show that in 1997, onlyt 626 Canadians died from HIV (or subsequent illness attributable to HIV) - 15th on a list of leading causes of death. Compare that with, 58,700 Canadians who died of Cancer, 57,400 heart disease, 8,600 of 'unintentional injuries' , 4,600 of psychosis, and 3,600 of suicide. Take that in context and we should be more concerned about dying of cancer or heart disease. this is from the States. http://www.ncpa.org/health/pdh39.html Based on the number of deaths caused by various diseases, NIH funding seems skewed -- spending $111 per death from AIDS, compared to $10 per death from cancer, $3 for heart disease and $2 for stroke. Based on the number of people affected, NIH spends $1,069 for each person afflicted with HIV/AIDS, $296 for cancer, $158 for multiple sclerosis, $93 for heart disease, $54 for Alzheimer's and $26 for Parkinson's.
  6. Partly with Islam and its radical interpretation. Islam is not just a religion, its a way of life, an Islamist state where Sharia law is set up and interpreted by men, theological law as opposed to democratic law. Sharia also is in severe conflict with many of our basic rights e.g. equality before the law Calls for Sharia law in countries where Muslim have large enough populations have to be opposed, fortunately Canada did that. Just ask people in Holland about problems with radical Islamists. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/14/...in1893879.shtml Many British Muslims Put Islam First NRO: Survey Shows Many Are More Loyal To Fellow Muslims Outside U.K. Aug. 14, 2006 (CBS) Quote Thirty percent of British Muslims would prefer to live under Sharia (Islamic religious) law than under British law. (National Review Online) This column was written by Patrick Basham. The recent homegrown plot in Britain to blow up transatlantic flights will intensify the fear that the country's 1.6 million Muslims are rejecting political tolerance and free speech for a violent, radicalized version of Islam. There is a real concern that British Muslims do pose a threat to that country and its traditional values. So how prevalent are such radical views among British Muslims? Some answers are provided by the most comprehensive survey to date of Muslim opinion in Britain. The results from NOP Research, broadcast by Channel 4-TV on August 7, are startling. Forty-five percent say 9/11 was a conspiracy by the American and Israeli governments. This figure is more than twice as high as those who say it was not a conspiracy. Tragically, almost one in four British Muslims believe that last year's 7/7 attacks on London were justified because of British support for the U.S.-led war on terror. When asked, "Is Britain my country or their country?" only one in four say it is. Thirty percent of British Muslims would prefer to live under Sharia (Islamic religious) law than under British law. According to the report, "Half of those who express a preference for living under Sharia law say that, given the choice, they would move to a country governed by those laws." Twenty-eight percent hope for the U.K. one day to become a fundamentalist Islamic state. This comports with last year's Daily Telegraph newspaper survey that found one-third of British Muslims believe that Western society is decadent and immoral and that Muslims should seek to end it. The news is no less alarming on the question of freedom of speech. Seventy-eight percent support punishment for the people who earlier this year published cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammed. Sixty-eight percent support the arrest and prosecution of those British people who "insult Islam." When asked if free speech should be protected, even if it offends religious groups, 62 percent of British Muslims say No, it should not.
  7. Good article here, and food for thought, but I'm guessing the politically correct will still insist it is only a smal lminority who cause the problems. While obviously not all Muslims are terrorists or radical, IMHO there are a lot more than we wish to believe who support terrorist actions. http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/is...21-eacfda7c9fd9 Wilfully blind to terror's source Lorne Gunter, National Post Published: Monday, August 14, 2006 In light of Thursday's thwarted terror plot to explode Transatlantic airliners, outbound from Britain to the United States, can we all now please stop pretending that the problem isn't the present state of Islamic culture? For there to be enough Muslims terrorists to feed the manpower needs of the London plots (last week's, and last summer's 7/7 attack on the Underground and buses), the Toronto 17, the Miami 7, the Mumbai train explosions last month, the Afghan insurgency, the Iraq insurgency, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Islamic Jihadi, Madrid, Bali, Mogadishu, Chechnya, LAX, the Danish cartoon riots and so on, there must be literally millions of Muslims vehemently hateful of Western culture and democracy. Not every fanatic is capable of martyrdom, nor do martyrs operate alone ---there must be a vast network to produce and feed them. To produce the tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of Muslims fighters and terrorists that exist worldwide, there must be millions more funnelling support and money, hateful preaching, deadly training, poisonous school lessons and so on into the tip who are the actual plotters and bombers. Yet even as they announced the arrests of 24 middle-class British Muslims late this week, representatives of the British government and Scotland Yard assiduously avoided saying that any of the arrestees were followers of Islam, even though all were. Officials steadfastly referred to them as "British Asians," as if either their British-ness or Asian-ness was the cause of their desire to sneak explosives aboard 10 aircraft filled with civilian travellers and detonate them mid-flight. They were not prepared to blow themselves up and take 200 or 300 innocent flyers with them because they were fanatical devotees of cricket, nor because they were worshippers of Vishnu, the Hindu god of creation. Being British and Asian had almost nothing to do with their being suspected conspirators in the largest terror plot since 9/11. It was the same in June when Canadian security forces arrested 17 Muslims plotting to attack targets in this country using fertilizer bombs and perhaps even kidnap the Prime Minister and saw off his head. When announcing those arrests, Mike McDonell, an assistant commissioner of the RCMP, insisted -- in what may be the most politically correct whitewash in the history of Canadian policing -- that those in custody represented "the broad strata of our society. Some are students, some are employed, some are unemployed." Yeah, sure. But all of them were Muslims, right? And it was not their scholastic careers nor their employment status that compelled them to scheme to bring down the Peace Tower and CSIS's offices in Toronto. For his part, too, Bill Blair, Toronto's police chief, boasted that "there was not one single reference made by law enforcement to 'Muslim' or 'Muslim community.'" As if it were a good thing; as if it would help end terror for police to be wilfully blind to the source of the threat. A story on British Muslims in Sunday's New York Times reported that 81% identify themselves as Muslims first and British second, with similar levels among Muslims in other Western nations. Even among Muslims not radical enough to be either bombers or their supporters -- among moderate Muslims -- Muslim-ness was more important than British-ness. more
  8. Agreed, it really is being used to simply smear Harper, did Paul Martin attend any aids conferences? Maybe they should hold these things in Africa every year, would be appropriate.
  9. Thanks - a few months - bummer.
  10. The interesting thing I find is that the government of Ontario and Canada has already stated it's position in 1995 on the Plank Road Lands (of which Douglas Creek is part of) in their answer to the claims made by Six Nations...This is the section from that statement that deals with the Plank Road lands... STATEMENT OF DEFENCE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF CANADA I would also like to see and hear what the reasons are that surrenders are not valid and also whether the government has changed is position from their 1995 Statement of Defence. I guess everyone will continue to have to wait and see... I think we would all like to hear this as it seemed clear to all that the land had been surrendered, all evidence pointed to that. There is a scan of a document here: http://www.canadiana.org/ECO/PageView/9194...dcd486bf67d6585 http://www.canadiana.org/ECO/PageView?id=f...play=91942+0179 more links here; http://www.citizensofcaledonia.ca/Documentation_History.htm
  11. Just a rough estimate of those numbers in the transfer payments I posted, suggests over $5 billion given to, or otherwise spent on the natives of Canada in fiscal 2005-2006. According to this, it is way more than this, there was a report a few years ago pegging total payments at close to double that. Maybe someone could explain where all of that goes. http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/govrel/news.cfm?story=45684 According to the budget documents, the government spends $9.1-billion each year on programs for aboriginal people. The additional $450-million over two years will be spent on improving "education outcomes," improving access to clean drinking water and building and renovating housing on reserves. The budget also sets aside $2.2-billion for compensation for native people who suffered abuses in the residential-school system. Source: Globe and Mail, Jeff Gray http://www.thehilltimes.ca/html/index.php?...iginal/&c=1 Federal Spending on Aboriginal People: Budget Document The government spends approximately $9.1-billion each year to fund programs directed towards aboriginal people. * Indian and Northern Affairs Canada provides about $6.1-billion, of which about 80 per cent is for basic, province-type services for First Nations on reserve (e.g. education, social services, income assistance), where the government has primary responsibility. * Fifteen other federal departments and agencies, the largest of which is Health Canada, also provide about $3-billion for a wide variety of programs for First Nations on reserve, Inuit, Métis and off-reserve aboriginal people. * Over the last five years, spending has grown by about 4.3 per cent or $350-million per year.
  12. Another good editoria,. http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/is...49ba511&p=2 Hanging Europe's Jews out to dry Why would a civilization, at the height of its intellectual, cultural and technological power, seek to subvert its own values to appease a bunch of jihadist fanatics? Why is Israel being sacrificed on the altar of a seventh-century mystical supernaturalism? Were my interlocutors crazy? Were the demonstrators driving themselves crazy with their hatred of Israel? All this abnormal behaviour defies conventional political analysis, so I decided to consult my favourite shrink. Some of the haters, he advised, may oppose Israel for more or less rational political reasons. Others because of its perceived closeness to America. Still others may use the anti-Israel bandwagon as a cover for anti-Semitism. But the root of the problem, he contended, is Auschwitz. Europeans collectively find the guilt of the Holocaust an unbearable burden. Many deal with it by projecting their guilt on to Israel. According to this tortuous analysis, the victim becomes the perpetrator and Europe redeems itself by opposing the "new Nazis" (Israel particularly; Jews generally) and offering succour to the "new victims" (almost anyone who stands against Israel or Jews). It is clear now, if it was not before, that Israel's struggle with its zero-sum antagonists transcends territorial issues (Israel, remember was attacked across internationally recognized borders in Gaza and Lebanon). The UN might get the parties to agree to a ceasefire (or a "cessation of hostilities"), but this will not last. Nor will an international peace-keeping force prevail if its objectives are to disarm and dissolve Hezbollah. The battle lines have been drawn and the West's "Friends of Hezbollah" should understand exactly where they run. First, for Israel the current conflict is the start of a long, existential war, which is likely to draw in both Syria and Iran, with unpredictable consequences for the protagonists and for the wider region. Second, Israel's struggle is also the West's struggle. The Islamist enemy that Israel faces is no different from the Islamist enemy that has already visited death and destruction to the streets of New York, Washington, London, Madrid, Istanbul, Bali, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and a clutch of other cities. The goal of lsrael, and of Europe, in the struggle against Islamic extremism must be to win, and win decisively. Any conclusion to hostilities that leaves Hezbollah or Hamas intact, let alone with a credible military option, will provide the Islamist world with a stunning triumph. General Norman Schwarzkopf, who led the U.S. coalition against Iraq in the first Gulf war, had it right when he was asked recently if he thought Hezbollah should be forgiven. "I believe that forgiving Hezbollah is God's function," he replied. "The Israelis' job is to arrange the meeting." Israel is in a long-term struggle for survival. But the outcome of the conflicts in faraway Gaza and Lebanon will also have implications for Europe. Will the Europeans hang their Jews out to dry in an attempt to appease the jihadists and forestall the onslaught? The sentiments of those two Holocaust survivors haunt me. I would guess that their antennae are more sensitive than most.
  13. This is a good blog and reply, he says it better than I could. http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/ The religion of peace The news coming in of the plot to blow up UK flights in mid-air is devastating. This is a salutary and important reminder that the "war on terror" is not a figment of the imagination of the Bush-Blair axis but a reality. Congratulations to the police and security services for intercepting the terrorists. Despite the bleating of the BBC, the news agencies and their fellow travellers, there are some evil bastards out there and they aim to kill US – that is you and me, men women and children, without discrimination and without a shred of remorse. Apparently, as many as ten British Airway flights from the UK to the United States had been targeted and the chilling thing is that liquid chemical explosives were to be used, defying normal airport security measures. The plan was, we are told, was to blow the aircraft up over deep water so that there would be no wreckage or evidence, creating maximum fear, uncertainty and confusion, with the aim of bringing the air transportation system to a complete halt. This is your enemy people, and he lives in our midst. But he takes his solace, his funding and justification from events in Iraq, in Palestine and in southern Lebanon. These are the people, members of the "religion of peace", who regard death as a commodity, to be exploited, people who have no morals, no scruples and no mercy. And there is only one thing you can do with people like this – you root them out and, where necessary, kill them.
  14. I agree. I think you have hit on a seriously good suggestion. Those topics are worthy of a separate category. We should make the suggestion to Greg. I will email him now.
  15. I wish more people would do this, rather than clutter up the board with multiple threads of the same topic. For example, there are currently 9 threads on 'native issues', and all of them are pretty much on one topic. I think I would prefer a new thread (depending on how old the old thread is. I was going to suggest that maybe there should be a separate forum for native issues, they really seem to be taking over the whole forum.
  16. What you see in Caledonia is what happens when people feel they are threatened. The racism you saw there will be nothing compared to what you would see if the court actually granted Six Nations title to land that other people currently own or if the court imposed a cash settlement that was so high the gov't was forced into introduce a new tax to pay for it. That is why I think it is dumb for Six Nations to be demanding the return of the entire Haldimand tract. If they have any interest in living peacefully with their neighbors they are going to have to settle for a lot less - no matter what they might be theoretically entitled to. Agreed, but the more I read and hear the more we seem to be on a collision course. I heard on the radio yesterday, that the natives have said they will NEVER leave that land, and they will NOT accept any legal decision that is not in their favour. So, even if it is legally decided against them they are staying and disrupting anyway - any attempt to remove them will be met with country wide resistance (terrorism). Not to mention that the general point seems to be that the natives are actually demanding all of Canada to be reverted to a racist state. Something many people are not hearing or accepting, or maybe they are just in plain denial over it. Maybe this is the opportunity for the government to speed up the process considerably, take a firm stand on these issues, settle outstanding claims one way or another then close off any new claims. Life for all people has to return to normalcy, all people have to work and make a living, it is time to take a stand on behalf of all Canadians and equality.
  17. How many more useless threads are you going to put on here about the same topic? You just want to bash Harper for the same BS reasons, give it up! Your time was back in the sixties... go get in your VW bus and head for Woodstock, we are tired of your same pathetic rants. Agreed, similar tactics to one cagerattler I believe.
  18. Of course he's right, and he's made a pretty good/sly move in appointing a liberal to be a middle east advisor though. This MP is going to have to quit the caucus maybe even jumpt ship. There is no equivocating here when it comes to supporting or not supporting terrorists. Hezbollah is an illegal, nationless terrorist organization that cannot "retaliate' for anything in any acceptable definition of the term. Hezbollah has no citizens, no recognition as a nation, no responsibility and represents no one. This gang of amoral, belligerent, murderous thugs can only lash out, destroy, maim and murder. Hezbollah contribute nothing to civilization nor to any society; their coinage nothing but is anarchy and disruption of peaceful coexistence between nations. Sovereign nations can retaliate for encroachment on the safety and security of the state or its citizens; Hezbollah can not. Do people really think that it is reasonable to allow Hezbollah to continue to be funded and armed by Iran, and to continue bombarding Israel with rockets, to tunnel under the border and kidnap Israelis at will and that Israel can continue to exist, but only so long as it accepts constant attack and makes no efforts to defend itself?
  19. Criticising Israel helps no one either. Israel will do what it thinks it needs to do. And it's not like we have any influence with anyone over there. I don't think taking either side or neither side is going to make any difference. However, I think we ought to align ourselves firmly with Israel simply because this is the right thing to do. It might cost some Arab votes, but so what? Absolutely agree, imagine if we had remained neutral during WW 11. Imagine if the liberals or others had complained about U.S. 'disproportionate response' to Pearl Harbour - imagine....I can't ! Imagine if no one backed Israel and all supported terrorism, imagine what our world would look like if Hezbolla and Hamas have their way. We would all be Islamic or die, women would be second class citizens etc. etc.
  20. Again, you make the case. It is the same as the misuse of the the word racist, as far as I can tell a these days, a racist is someone who disagrees with a native point of view.
  21. I don't think there is such as thing as "true" history. History is nothing but a story told to justify the present. That statement applies to your version of the history as well as the version of history that used to be taught in schools in this country.[ [. As I said respect is two way street. If you want to be shown respect then you have to show respect to others - even if they completely disagree with your point of view. Its funny because its true... Excellet points riverwind, some of these posts from the 'natives' here have certainly opened my eyes to the true nature of their intentions - and they are not pretty, indeed I see more racism in their words and language than in anything else I've read.
  22. Can I have my health care tax dollars back then? If your not part of Canada, stop abusing our services. Don't tell me you were never born or seen a doctor your whole life, never went to school either. Why should my money go to people that call themselves non-Canadians? Exactly - let them be a 'nation' on their own dime - and quit whining and asking for more handouts.
  23. This entire conflict has driven me nuts. One hand I agree that Isreal had to do something to deter rocket attacks from Lebanon. On the other hand, I have a real problem with Isreali obsession with collective punishment and its willingness to destroy civilian infrastructure. Now we have a situation where I can't even trust the media to give me an accurate account of what is really going on in Lebanon. It is impossible tp have an informed opinion in such an environment. The photos of Caana were from the same photographer, plus we know that Hezbollah is stage managing the press etc. CNN et al admitted it. I believe there is a post on this elsewhere I too am dismayed bu the number of civilian casualties, although it is Israel's policy not to deliberately target civilians. Hezbollah of course uses civilians as human shields, and counts on Israel getting the bad PR. Israel has to win this one way or another, otherwise it is game over for Israel (IMHO) If Hezbollah wins, there will be no stopping them and terrorism.
  24. They have withdrawn all of them, but the damage is done, those who do not support Israel will believe them anyway. One also has to wonder how many other photos from other sources are also doctored. http://today.reuters.com/news/ArticleNews....AST-REUTERS.xml LONDON (Reuters) - Reuters withdrew all 920 photographs by a freelance Lebanese photographer from its database on Monday after an urgent review of his work showed he had altered two images from the conflict between Israel and the armed group Hizbollah. Global Picture Editor Tom Szlukovenyi called the measure precautionary but said the fact that two of the images by photographer Adnan Hajj had been manipulated undermined trust in his entire body of work.
  25. What about going under RELIGIOUS rule? The Taliban perhaps? he wasn't, just more unsubstantiated drive by smears. I guess they choose to ignore good old Tommy Douglas and what he actually stood for...
