So here it is, now what after a year of anarchy and breach of law. http://tinyurl.com/28ec7t The myths of Caledonia There's no legal basis to the Six Nations land claim; all they had was an occupancy permit The current impasse in Caledonia between the Six Nations natives and non-natives concerning rights to certain lands is very poorly understood by the public and the media. The ownership history of Six Nations lands in Ontario has been ignored, as has the legal basis of the Six Nations claim to those lands. It's time for the politically incorrect truth to be told. In short, the Six Nations have no legal rights to the lands in question, and have had none for over a century. They have never had any rights to land in Ontario by virtue of aboriginal title or by treaty. For a tract of land along the Grand River, they obtained in 1784 merely an occupancy permit from British colonial Governor Frederick Haldimand that endured only at the pleasure of the Crown. After 1784, the Six Nations surrendered to the Crown various portions of the Grand River tract, and by the middle of the 19th century all that remained was the land contained in the current Six Nations reserve south of Brantford. That is a summary of their legal rights. As for moral obligations, a review of the history of the Six Nations Indians indicates that they are not innocent victims of land robbery by European colonizers, but are instead themselves the culprits who terrorized, conquered, and displaced many other Indian tribes whose lands and resources they sought to control. The first myth is that the Six Nations Indians have a valid aboriginal claim to the subject lands, and the second myth is that the Six Nations were the aboriginal occupants of these lands at the time of first contact with European explorers, traders and colonizers. The truth is that the Attiwandaron Indians, also known as the Neutral Indians, occupied the large tract of land bounded by lines connecting what are now Grand Bend, Oakville, the north shore of Lake Erie, and the St. Clair River in 1615 AD when the French Recollets missionaries entered Ontario. Caledonia is within this tract

Suddenly PM Harper Cares About Aids
scribblet replied to imatitlover's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Exactly, especially in developed countries. Undeveloped countries given the resources and political will can help to cap it. Not too many people are willing to give up sex but they don't have to, fidelity would also help to cap the spread. -
Too bad Gore doesn't walk the talk http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/articl...?article_id=367 Al Gore’s Personal Energy Use Is His Own “Inconvenient Truth” Gore’s home uses more than 20 times the national average... Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES). -snip- The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average. Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359. Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006. Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year. -snip- In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

Suddenly PM Harper Cares About Aids
scribblet replied to imatitlover's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Tell that to the Catholic Church then. See how far you get. They are responmsible for plenty of new AIDS cases . I suspect you dont agree. ??? Sexual promiscuity and high-risk behaviours are what spreads the disease, doesn't matter that the RC church says. -

Agreed, there are always innocent victims to this, but generally speaking aids could be wiped out if people changed their irresponsible behaviour. -
NDP proposes Federal Minimum Wage - $10.00
scribblet replied to ClearWest's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Greg Sorbara ((Ont. Liberal) says that jobs are at risk with a $10 an hour minimum wage. It just stands to reason that if the cost of labour is raised, business will demand less of it. Small business won't be able to hire or keep workers. Maybe a better solution would be to lower the taxes for lower income earners. Raising the Minimum wage won't decrease poverty, the major cause of poverty is a lack of education and skills. The higher the minimum wage, the higher the high school drop out rate. There was a study done by Human resources and Social Development Canada which pointed out an increase will only result in more poverty. Have to find the link. -
I always thought this was what [liberal] Canada was all about, foreign aid, peacekeeping and rebuilding - guess that's no good now unless of course its the Liberals doing it. -

Nuclear facilities, water plants etc. anything that could disrupt our society in a big way.

Its part of its drive to launch five satellites into orbit by 2010 which should give us cause for concern if they can pinpoint our installations etc. Not only that an Iranian ICBM with a range of nearly 4,000 kilometers would put central Europe, Russia, China and India within its range. Scary !

Should Canada Join the North American Union in 2010
scribblet replied to obsidian's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
If there is such a thing I'm wondering why not. Wouldn't it be something like the European Common Market? -
He was a computer programmer, which of course, gives him tons of pull. He was da Policy Man!!! Oh forget that one guess he was doing all of this while teaching at the university

Harper has as much of a mandate as any government, his first 5 priorities have been addressed or will be in the next budget, (more tax cuts coming) those 5 were only 5 - get that, which do not limit a gov't to do nothing else until another election. Provinces are not willing to work with the feds on wait times, at least Ontario isn't. Canadians never embrace all promises or issues, not even all the Tories agree 100%. In order to successfully manage and keep a minority government, Harper has to be careful to pick and choose the initiatives and issues they bring forward and when. So far he has done an admirable job.

This is another example of breathtaking hypocrisy and double standards, similar to that of the Liberals complaining about patronage and stacking the courts, then it is spread around the internet as if - gasp - meine gotte - we (Liberals) never did such things http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories Liberal MPs accused the Conservatives Friday of trying to obliterate Liberals from Canada's history, capping off a week of intense partisan sniping between Liberals and Conservatives. At the end of the week, Liberals accused the Conservatives of deliberately hiding a display honouring Lester Pearson and the Nobel Peace Prize he won in 1957........and But CTV News has learned that the Pearson display was routinely hidden by backdrops set up for the press conferences of Liberal ministers during the governments of Paul Martin and Jean Chretien. That fact, though, did not deter Liberals from attacking the Conservatives." lets not let facts get in the way hoisted on their own petard--again.

Harper Links Liberal to Air India
scribblet replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I agree, IMHO most Canadians are not as partisan or politically minded as those on discussion boards, and the extreme radical interpretations of what was said are not main stream. I also agree that the Liberals behaviour in parliament seems to be getting more disruptive and dishonorable. -
Security Certificates Struck Down
scribblet replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Have they really been struck down http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.h...76-0fd79c297a98 Security certificates are here to stay National Post Published: Saturday, February 24, 2007 We were slightly baffled Fri- day morning, when the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in Charkaoui vs. Canada. Headlines immediately flooded onto the Web declaring that the court had "struck down" or "reversed" the system whereby foreigners on Canadian soil can be detained on the issuance of security certificates by the federal Cabinet. It would be much more accurate to say that the court had reviewed every aspect of the system, found that most of it was justified by national security, and asked only for minimal changes designed to protect the rights of the arrestees. Barring stronger legal arguments against them, the certificates -- along with the safeguards already built into the system by its legislative creators --are here to stay. -
Harper Links Liberal to Air India

Seems like this is the tone of this board now, it seems to be taking a downhill dive. -
Actually what is is disgusting is the Liberal's behaviour in refusing to let him speak, after all after all, they were always allowed to give their spin on questions relating to the sponsorship scandal. Just another example of how they want to deny free speech - absolutely appalling conduct. Regardless, The Liberal MP in question does have a father in law who is/was a witness in the Air India Bombing so Harper was obviously attempting to use that relationship and the Sun article to emphasize how important it is for the Libs to support anti-terror legislation. It is my understanding that these proceedings (with the father in law as a witness) cannot continue with the change in laws. Besides, the Libs are hypocrites because didn't they (Bob Rae etal) just a while back make make the same points linking Nav Bains, Omar Alghabra and Tamil activists to terrorism. They also implied they were hijacking the party and shaping Liberal policy based on their own "vendettas" Didn't see the Liberal party getting their knickers in a knot over that one.

Well, Dion sayst he's impressed by Trudeau's courage to fight for the nomination and hopes he will have a lot of luck. But Dion says he won't get involved in the nomination process, and added that Trudeau is showing that he's not taking the easy way to get into politics. Not only that Trudeau jr. wants to restore nobility to politics, guess that means he won't be giving the finger and using fuddle duddle, http://www.recorder.ca/cp/National/070222/n022292A.html IMO I think he'll win anywhere he runs, they are fawning all over him now.
-
Well he has a nice new membership, no johnny come lately him He has to win the nomination yet -I hear there are a few contenders for it, Dion may not be able to force them all to step aside

That almost sounds poetic. It also sounds like Stephen-envy to me. Nobody could envy such depravity in a human, such pettiness, such a mean spirit. That is something to avoid. Gee it sounds just like someone who just couldn't stand that their idol Stockwell Day lost to Harper so goes ballistic because of it. Talk about mean spirited hmmmm

So, we have a budget coming on March 19, it will give provinces more money and cut corporate and personal income taxes. Flaherty has said the government's financial picture is so healthy, it can afford "significant tax reduction" beyond the $2.5 billion in cuts already slated to be enacted in the 2007 budget. He also says that Ottawa is taking in so much revenue that it can also fix the fiscal imbalance between the federal and provincial governments. The new Strategic Counsel poll suggests the Conservatives have the support of 34 percent of Canadians, with the Liberals at 29 percent. (not the same as one just posted) - A Canadian Press report noted that the third week in March will be a perfect political storm. Not only will the threat of a confidence vote hang over the Commons, but a Quebec election will enter its crucial final week Globeandmail page A4 Looks good to me here we go, will the opposition bring down the gov't...

Polls and more polls but it can change ..... ottawacitizen.com Poll shows Harper is Canadians' pick for PM Dion comes up as third choice, falls behind Layton on environment The Ipsos Reid poll, conducted exclusively for CanWest News Service and Global National and released yesterday, also said those surveyed see Mr. Harper as more trustworthy than Mr. Dion and as someone with values closer to their own. The online survey -- conducted among a random group of 1,000 respondents from Feb. 15 to Feb. 19 -- reported 46 per cent said Mr. Harper would make the best prime minister. NDP leader Jack Layton was their second choice at 29 per cent while Mr. Dion trailed at 25 per cent. The poll is considered accurate within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. "The current prime minister usually has an advantage in that kind of question," said pollster Darrell Bricker. "But being behind Layton is a significant problem for him (Dion)." The result is devastating for Mr. Dion, said Mr. Bricker, who is president of the polling firm. It also looks as if Dion has Stockwell Day syndrome http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/st...343ff467460&p=2

Suddenly PM Harper Cares About Aids
scribblet replied to imatitlover's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Good grief woman, and you think Dion and the rest of the Liberals don't want that majority more than anything in the world. Believe me, I'll rest a lot more easily when Harper has a majority and we are free from Liberal shenanigans and plans to strip us of our freedoms (see other thread on theo cons). Your obsession about Harris is eating your soul and will turn you into a prune, especially when your hate obfuscates the issues and refuses to allow you to open your mind. cheers
