Chinese Head Tax Compensation
theloniusfleabag replied to BubberMiley's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear August1991, To my best 'ciferin', that is $5,580,000 paid to survivors (at $20,000/head reparations) Funny, 'head reparations' are used to compensate 'head tax'. I guess the rest of the 'x-30,000,000' will build some nice memorial somewhere. I heard rumour that there are some caves underneath Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, that some of the Chinese that were unwilling/unable to pay the head tax had hidden in. Evidently, these were later used by Al Capone and his cronies to store bootleg booze in prior to being exported to the US during prohibition. Seems like as good a spot as any. Have to split hairs on this one. If those arrested were arrested because they were French, there might be some claim for redress. However, it is different that if Canada was at war with France, and the people were arrested because they were French. In the FLQ case, it was an internal matter of 'civil diosbedience', rather than a policy that could be defined as 'racist'. -
Stupid Global Warming Tricks
theloniusfleabag replied to sharkman's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dear sharkman, Not obvious at all, actually. I looked at the link, and it seemed to be filled with people who blindly deny the existence of man-made factors in the environment equation. Talk about lemmings! -
The Cost of Native Land Claims
theloniusfleabag replied to Riverwind's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear Leafless, I agree with you here. I don't like the poll itself, and did not respond, because (I agree with Charles Anthony) the options are very limited and 'leading'. Riverwind's comment... Is a very damaging one, to renege on a contract demonstrates very bad faith (or 'bad medicine'). I think that perhaps a re-negotiation, with a 'one-time buyout' clause, might be a possibility. -
The Cost of Native Land Claims
theloniusfleabag replied to Riverwind's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear Leafless, That is borderline 'conspiracy theory'. Looking back at 'Canadian History', the English, French and the 'Originals' were all equally involved in creating 'Canada'. I believe that this is why 'totalitarianism' truly belongs to 'the right' and not 'the left', because you seem to dismiss a notion of 'collective culturalism', and would rather have the strongest take over completely, while expecting the 'weaker' to assimilate, aquiesce, or die. -
Stupid Global Warming Tricks
theloniusfleabag replied to sharkman's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dear sharkman, Do you include NASA as part of the 'regurgitating lemmings' crowd?http://www.giss.nasa.gov/edu/gwdebate/ -
Dear BHS, I don't doubt that some politicians might utter such a cry, but such a move is highly unlikely. It is more likely (and has been hinted at) that the US would use it's (dubious) missile defence system to shoot down the missile should NK launch it. This would be far less provocative than a strike at a target on NK soil.Further, there is speculation that the missile is likely intended to launch a sattelite, and not a warhead (from the second link in my above post)
-
Dear BHS, I found this one quite interesting, (apart from Yglesias' stuttering) but not much different from this forum, except perhaps a more 'concentrated' version. Something similar might be tried here, (I believe I suggested it a long time ago) of 'head to head' debates on a particular issue. The 'Friday Night Fights', as it were. Don't know if there would be enough bandwidth to support such a thing.
-
Dear Mr. Hardner, The only other source of this info I have found, other than the original NK 'news story' was on some radical 'conspiracy theory' sites. I would rate this story up there with "The Mossad was behind 9/11". A couple of links about NK's missile capability...(the first one might be the island in question... http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/librar...00507-radar.htm http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/...624-nkir269.htm Their inventory... http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/dprk/missile.htm

Dear August1991, You give the impression that you believe that that these thing are unrelated to each other. (Apart from the madness bit, I don't believe Bush has 'gone mad')About the some 14 'enduring bases' the US is working on, this isn't the 'latest', as it is 'old news'. from... http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/fac.../iraq-intro.htm Further, though Kuwait may grant some presence in their country, don't forget that they are a hard-line Islamic country themselves. They, and other countries, were very apprehensive at the notion of being seen as 'being co-operative'[sic] with the US in the first 'Gulf War'. If the Americans or Russians were to try to establish large, permanent military bases in Quebec, would you prefer them to be inside, or on the outskirts of Montreal? Or would you rather not have them at all?

Report: Hundreds of WMDs Found in Iraq
theloniusfleabag replied to Johnny Utah's topic in The Rest of the World
Dear August1991, Nonsense. My parameters of what constitutes 'WMD's' isn't all that strict, either. -functional -enough to be used as a weapon Plus some others, to be sure, but the rubbish shown earlier in the thread is hardly acceptable (and an extremely similar thread was posted some time ago). -
Liberal Table Bill Restricting Abortions
theloniusfleabag replied to scribblet's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Dear August1991, Happy that you agree you are engaged in speculation. The CBC is 'biased', to a certain degree, but nothing is free from it, and 'piblic' media is likely to be less biased than privately owned outlets. -
Confused about some bannings
theloniusfleabag replied to Shakeyhands's topic in Support and Questions
Dear Shady, I suspect you know that this isn't true. I further suspect that the banning of Burns was directly related to his inability to 'self-police'. The moderator has always tried to limit denigrating comments such as 'al-Gore', etc. (I received a warning in the past because I called my MP, Rob Anders, a 'moron'). If Burns had been repeatedly warned to cease and desist from such behaviour, and chose to ignore the warnings, then he must also suffer the consequences. Just as your repeated use of the term 'the kook-left' should be dropped. It is a broad and derogatory statement which does nothing for the level of debate. Just my opinion, of course. There are plenty of reasonable, intelligent people on this board from both sides of the political spectrum. They all, however, should respect the viewpoints of others, and while being free to take issue with those viewpoints, should not attack the individual who raises those points. I am not guilt free on this score, mind you, but I do try to heed warnings when I get them. -
Homosexuality a mental disorder
theloniusfleabag replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dear sharkman, Actually, I was referring to 'human advancement' over the other species. After we rose above the chain of 'eat or be eaten'. I disagree. Not everyone will like everything. A very good 'gay' friend of mine told me he did have sex with a woman, and didn't care for it. He found himself attracted to a another man, they had sex, and that is what he preferred. Even though I often teased him about his 'sexual preference' (he had a tremendous sense of humour), we became very good friends. We shared a love for fishing, billiards, music and the occasional practical joke, but not homosexual sex. Which was fine by both of us, because we both felt that what either of us did, consentually and in the privacy of our own bedrooms, was none of the other person's business. -
Dear August1991, It would be a shame for such an important post as this to fall by the wayside. A popular PM is good for the country, and everyone in it. I am glad to see you think that the PM can be a 'good person/politician', and still be English.

Homosexuality a mental disorder
theloniusfleabag replied to Leafless's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dear BHS, 'Procreative drive' and sexual drive are two different things. The church tried to demand that they be inextricably linked, but the majority of people would not like to have kids every time they have sex. What of oral and anal sex? Some prefer it, some don't. Would you suggest that I have brain damage because I like getting blown? It could be said that Homosexuality is a product of human advancement. When we no longer had to gear all of our activities to basic survival, we had more options. One thing that was created was 'leisure time', and sex for pleasure, rather than survival. -
from... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Toronto_Area I remember driving from Toronto to Mississauga some time ago, and the only way I knew I had left one city and entered another was from the signs on the road. In 1979, our Social Studies teacher had told us kids that the southern tip of Ontario would one day be a 'Megalopolis', where several cities grew into one, with millions upon millions of people in it. Sounded like crazy talk at the time. Mind you, in Grade 7, one already knows everything.

The Next Rosa Parks?
theloniusfleabag replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dear BHS, It seems to me (and I could be wrong, I was a poor student) that the 'valedictorian speech' is not supposed to be about the individual, but a representation on behalf of the whole graduating class. I should think the freedoms of religious expression should be there if the speaker was speaking only for themselves, (such as winning 'top student award', or making the Dean's List) but it is my impression that all students are represented by that speech. -
Say, Oddman, Do you find it odd that out of the some 30+ guests just viewing the board index, one of them was reading an old 'Chavez" thread, and now (rather than responding to the old thread) you miraculously post a new one? Then, you would think that this: isn't going to be recognized as trolling?

Some classy and classic moments with the Carolina victory... Ward, the Carolina goalie, after being presented with the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP: "The Conn Smythe, you could have given it to anyone on this team, the real important one is the Stanley Cup." Doug Weight, a long time former Oiler and a gritty (yet gentlemanly) player, grimacing in pain, hoisting the Stanley Cup (his, and anyone else's who has played a lot of hockey, dream), with a separated shoulder. August1991, This series provided me with entertainment beyond it's value, yet I have to pay Oprah, some Survivor 'castaway', the NHL and William Shatner each a nickel if I want to watch the game. "The market' ain't free.

Confused about some bannings
theloniusfleabag replied to Shakeyhands's topic in Support and Questions
Dear Argus (and everyone), The rules for all of us are outlined under "Forum Rules". Most often the problem lies with policing each post, an impossible task for a moderator (which, I would suspect, is why Greg put out a call for 'administrators', some time ago). The only way he can warn/suspend/ban posters for not following the spirit of the forum is if offending material gets reported. The best way, however, is if we, the membership ourselves, 'self-police'. Starting with one's own self: refrain from returning insults in kind, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and remember the cardinal rule: 'Play the ball, not the person'.We are here to play with ideas, not with each others minds. Brains can get real messy. -
Dear August1991, They used to be in Hartford, but the 'market was too small' (perhaps not enough mm?) and market forces dictated their move to Carolina. As to the name, I would have found it quite ironic if the stadium or the players fell victim to one and were unable to complete the series. Often true, but I am very happy with the performance of the Oilers, they have every right to be proud of their efforts. It was an excellent series; tremendous effort, skill and determination shown by both teams, and whomever won it, it could easily be said that they deserved to do so. Lol. The market is a soiled, icky peep-show room floor. Things that are done for love are found outside of 'business'.
-
Dear Black Dog, I don't think so. I think their lacklustre performance Saturday spoke volumes about the fatigue they must have. Still, the finish line is right before both team's eyes. If the Oilers come out pounding, they should hoist the cup. The Oil have shown they have what it takes to win...heart. Not to belittle Carolina, for they are in the cup final too, no easy feat, and they played well enough to win 3 games this series. However, the gruelling pace of the games, and the travel involved, should favour the Oilers, who are more apt to show up with their lunchpails game in and game out. Just one more time... Nonsense. I am an 'Oiler fan' even though I live in Calgary (a product of growing up in Lethbridge...back in the early 80's, it seemed the kids were evenly split-50% Flames or Oilers), and I don't mind if Harper doesn't wear an Oilers Jersey...provided he wears none at all.

Sheehan Supports U.S. Deserters in Canada
theloniusfleabag replied to Johnny Utah's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I have to agree. I am no supporter of the US or their actions, but Sheehan is a boob. Her son willingly went to Iraq, yet she claims 'he didn't want to go'. As for the deserters, they have the right to be 'conscientious objectors', however that is up to the US gov't to decide if they meet the criteria.
