I do not live in fear Nova. I agree with the way this problem is being handled. There is more to this than simply "understanding." You seem to think that the US and it's policies are to blame. I, on the other hand think that even if the US were twice as benevolent and did not support Israel that it would have been attacked anyways. OBL and his ilk do not desire world peace whether it ends with their side winning with a worldwide theocracy or not. They desire power and use the Great Satan as a focal point to place others under them and be leaders where in another world they would be nothing. Kind of like wanting to be a rock star but not caring whether the music is any good or not. Granted, if things were different and we all walked around in purple dinosaur outfits hugging each other they would have to change their battle cry but the end would be the same. A common hatred and chanting and lots of suicide and death, only with a different reason. Yes, in retrospect there are a lot of things that should have been done different. It is apparent today that things that made sense twenty and fitfy years ago were not without a price. However to blame that solely on the US is wrong. Times change, and what may have worked before doesn't work now. I think you and I talked before and my point I think is still valid; Understand and reach out if you will, these societies are not like they were before, isolated and harmless but to few westerers and seldom seen in the first world. They are very much as they were before, primitive, superstitious and devoutly religious but now are overloaded by modern society and globalism withut the ability and political process to deal properly with it. In short, they have had the 21st century dropped on them and they are not ready. Turmoil and anarchy are breeding grounds for terror and fasism both of which are widespread throughout the middle east. Come to undrstanding with purposful agitation? I think that it while not impossible is a bigger problem than either the left or the right imagine.

Hey Nova, without delving into US foreign policy or right or wrong I would like to point out that there are people for whatever reason who desire to kill us in the most painful manner possible. I would argue that my family's safety immediately is of more concern to me than any terrorist's feelings and for that matter any other nation or person on the face of the planet. How could a parent tell his child that there are men who want to kill her but not to worry as we may not be trying to erradicate them but rather are working very hard to understand them and why they want to blow her head off live on CNN? Once we have safeguarded that then by all means let's address misunderstandings, injustices and so on and forth.

Are you supporting those who would kill abortionists? If there are peaceful means to prevent it form happening, by all means do it. Snatch the baby to safety, but going in and murdering people, even if they commit abortion, is just as wrong as what they are doing. I must say, I have no symphathy for that girl who took RU 486...she tried to kill her baby and got what she deserved.... No, I, in my hypothetical world with it's anti abortion/up to one yr old termination law gave you an ilegal, but fairly begnign action to save these infants. Grabbing them out of harms way and carrying them off. I did not mention violence although myself I would probably include that in my options as there is no way I could walk past a place where an infant was being put to sleep. So, to what extent would you break the law in my hypothetical world? Nuclear, still waiting for you to answer my question. Thanks, KK

LOL, it just jumped out at me and i wanted to go with it for fun, I didn't intend to be mean. Locke's point is a valid one but has a rather large practical flaw. Then again, if we don't have dreams our realities will forever be anchored to the earth right? But seriously, that one religion thing is something we can run with. I figure if you all worshipped ...... ME, it would work rather well don't you figure? -

I think the Fundementalzoids are already way ahead of us on that one. Problem is that they want to take us out with them and I still have a few more streets to go and I think I forgot to turn off the stove ........ BTW, are you getting a plow or converting to one of the thousand of religions? Hang on a minute, we all have to be the same, I don't want to do your thing and they don't want to do mine so who gets to decide what we're all going to do? If there is a vote I want to be in "Planet of the Porn Stars." -

Hi Locke, that is definitely one solution. There are however many others. I'll list a few of them. As you browse over them I'm sure you will find a similarity with your idea. Another way to ensure world peace is for all mankind to become; snow plow operators; porn stars; policemen; convenience store owners; farmers; tool and die makers; high profile trial lawyers; talk show hosts. As for creating a democracy of this new earth the planet of the snow plow operators (if that is the way mankind chooses to have world peace) can all get together and decide which street and driveway gets plowed by whom. When lunchtime rolls around we will probably wish there was farmers instead of us and at night when we go to sleep in the cabs of our trucks we might wish there were house builders but by George, we sure will have world peace. Another bonus, as we drive back and forth cleaning the planet of snow we can smile, honk and wave at one another. AHHH, peace! -
Deceive the US? Have you been under a rock for the past decade? He deceived the world through the UN laughing at 14 resolutions. He wasn't playing little games. Maybe to you he was but to those countries in the area jhe attacked and threatened and to the people of the USA (and rightfully so) his sabre rattling, refusal to come clean with UN inspectors was a matter of life and death. The world changed 9 11, this wasn't a visable army and still is not. They do not base themselves in one country and signal their next move. They have signaled that they will hide, wait, recruit, threaten, arm themselves with the most devastating weapons available to them (gee, Saddam had some of those) and then attack the west. The US has to be cautious, cutting terrorism off at the root and be very lucky. Lucky all the time otherwise another 9 11 WILL happen and worse. Terrorists on the other hand, only have to get lucky once.

Good post Lonius. I agree, however scince the UN truely is ineffective and a fire was started by terrorists who are in every country in the Middle East, America needed to clean house. Saddam was outstanding business. Nothing was being done about it and he was a legitimate target. Not only that but he provided a great example for the rest of the rotten governments in the area. There is a price for flaunting the international community and now is a real bad time to rattle sabres with the USA. Providing a stable democratic government in the center of the ME will provide another example of how prosperity is accomplished, that has a dividened not only for the US and the weszt but all people of the Earth. Shape up and don;t mess with them as was another lesson in that Saddam was given many chances to come clean but wanted to become leader of the Arab world. Did he have contacts with terrorists? Yes. Did he have WMD that he could give these terrorists? Unknown but he did have them and had the ability to make them once the heat was off. As for the US picking up the tab in money and manpower within the UN my analogy is that if I am the designated driver by default I damm well take whatever route I want. You want a say, start paying the gas and take your turn at the wheel.

Got that right Riff.. Although relieved to have him taken out the Saudi and Kuwaiti rulers are also quaking in their boots as they know that once a prosperous, democratic Iraq is established their respective populations will begin to look at them as somewhat redundent and even oppressive. Lots of problems for the house of Saud in the next few years comming up.

Guys, there may well not be WMD in Iraq. Everybody was led to believe there was. Weapons inspectors, Democrats, Republicans even foreign leaders. Saddam may well have been trying to play one of his little tricks to humiliate the USA but he had done it before when weapons inspectors got too close to his WMD in the nineties. Shoot, when presidentiial palaces were placed off limits they started declaring factories presidential palaces for crying out loud. Saddam did everything in his power to lead America to believe he hadf them. Thwarting inspectors, setting last minute conditions, denying acess to documents and information in exchange for diplomatic favors and material. To cite the CIA as knowing anything is wrong, they operate on kthe best information they can get. Remember how they stated that they were starved for human int? Reports were written on what they were best able to assertain and what we knew Saddam had. Being the upfront kind of guy he is he offered no proof of what had happened to his stockpiles of WMD so you guys in all your fortune telling ability must be able to tell the world where they were destroyed/moved/sold or whatever as they don't seem to be there now according to what is being turned up. So, knowing they were never there please, call the CIA or Bush and tell him. Also, it would be very helpful if you can include dates and witnesses so that they can verify your information.

Bush Looks To U.n. To Share Burden On Troops In Ir

The entire planet Lonius. Just say, London was hit with a nulear weapon do you for a second think that with a million people dead in a second from terrorists that a newly wed couple in Paris are going to be thinking about buying a refrigerator or survival rations? The economy would crumble in the western world. Followed by the third world that depends on the first world. It wouldn't matter, New York, Ottawa, Bejing. Just knowing they had it and did it would change the world in a way never dreamed of. -
Yes Black Dog, I actually read the article before I published the link. The sarcasm is warrented as realisticly, what would replace the US if they left tommorow? Death, Islamic Fundementalism, Warlords, starvation. Do you, like these people say that somehow Iraq would just somehow fall into order and harmless benevolence if it were left in a vacum Tuesday morning? The people of Iraq must be able to at least control their own streets. Right now they cannot even do it with the Americans help so how would you expect them to extablish any kind of order in which democracy can stand a chance of taking root? Unless of course you think they should not have democracy, is that the case and if so why not, and what goevernment should these people make for themselves? As well, scince the only forms of governments these people have been exposed to in the last thousand years are ones where might is right how would they hold a democratic vote to determine this? And how would they stop the numerous tribal factions, religious factions, political fatcions, terrorist factions, and nationality factions from trying to hijack any vacum left by the US? IT WOULD BE A BLOODBATH BLACK DOG. I would, just off the top of my head estimate a million dead in a year or so with the finished product making Afganistan, Somalia and Liberia left looking like first world nations. Here, scince I'm not sure if you read the article I have quoted a couple of lines.

Hi Nuclear, I have a question. Supposing abortion was universally outlawed and in it's place a new, legal option was made. This option would give the mother the right after birth, to take the child (up to an age of one year old) to a clinic where if she chose she could have the child put to sleep. Now on a quiet street, every now and then a woman walks into a clinic holding a baby and an hour later comes out holding nothing. What would you do? Would you write on the forum how you did not like this, would you protest in front of government buildings. Or, like me would you take an active role and physiclly stop this from happening? It would not be hard, simply run up and snatch the baby from the woman's arms. To me there would be no way that I could walk by one of those clinics knowing a baby was being killed without taking physical action. How about you?

Killing and maiming thousands of innocent palestinaisn via Israeli airstrikes is wrong. Even the Israel pilots feel so. Here's the article Signatory of Israel pilots' letter says regrets signing petition By Amos Harel and Gideon Alon, Haaretz Correspondents, and Haaretz Service Colonel Ran, one of the 27 signatories of the pilots' letter of refusal, in which they stated that they would not participate in operations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, said Sunday he regretted signing the letter, and was changing his mind. The move came after a slew of criticism of the pilots' move from government figures and from fellow Israel Air Force airmen. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, speaking in a holiday interview to Israel Radio on Friday condemned the letter, saying it reminded him that there had also been an attempt to overthrow a democratically-elected government during the 1982 Lebanon War. Sharon's comments were an apparent reference to the Amram Mitzan's decision to resign during the Lebanon War. Mitzna was commander of the IDF Command College at the time.

Where are the WMD the left asks Bush. Why don't they ask their own guys, even that rat Chirac knew they were there; "This December will mark three years since United Nations inspectors last visited Iraq. There is no doubt that since that time, Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to refine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer- range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies." -- From a December 6, 2001 letter signed by Bob Graham, Joe Lieberman, Harold Ford, & Tom Lantos among others "Saddam's goal ... is to achieve the lifting of U.N. sanctions while retaining and enhancing Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs. We cannot, we must not and we will not let him succeed." -- Madeline Albright, 1998 "What is at stake is how to answer the potential threat Iraq represents with the risk of proliferation of WMD. Baghdad's regime did use such weapons in the past. Today, a number of evidences may lead to think that, over the past four years, in the absence of international inspectors, this country has continued armament programs." -- Jacques Chirac, October 16, 2002 "The community of nations may see more and more of the very kind of threat Iraq poses now: a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction, ready to use them or provide them to terrorists. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow." -- Bill Clinton in 1998 "In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security." -- Hillary Clinton, October 10, 2002 "I am absolutely convinced that there are weapons...I saw evidence back in 1998 when we would see the inspectors being barred from gaining entry into a warehouse for three hours with trucks rolling up and then moving those trucks out." -- Clinton's Secretary of Defense William Cohen in April of 2003 "Iraq is not the only nation in the world to possess weapons of mass destruction, but it is the only nation with a leader who has used them against his own people." -- Tom Daschle in 1998 "Saddam Hussein's regime represents a grave threat to America and our allies, including our vital ally, Israel. For more than two decades, Saddam Hussein has sought weapons of mass destruction through every available means. We know that he has chemical and biological weapons. He has already used them against his neighbors and his own people, and is trying to build more. We know that he is doing everything he can to build nuclear weapons, and we know that each day he gets closer to achieving that goal." -- John Edwards, Oct 10, 2002 "I share the administration's goals in dealing with Iraq and its weapons of mass destruction." -- Dick Gephardt in September of 2002 "Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." -- Al Gore, 2002 "We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction." -- Bob Graham, December 2002 "We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." -- Ted Kennedy, September 27, 2002 "I will be voting to give the president of the United States the authority to use force - if necessary - to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." -- John F. Kerry, Oct 2002 "We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandates of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." -- Carl Levin, Sept 19, 2002 "Over the years, Iraq has worked to develop nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. During 1991 - 1994, despite Iraq's denials, U.N. inspectors discovered and dismantled a large network of nuclear facilities that Iraq was using to develop nuclear weapons. Various reports indicate that Iraq is still actively pursuing nuclear weapons capability. There is no reason to think otherwise. Beyond nuclear weapons, Iraq has actively pursued biological and chemical weapons.U.N. inspectors have said that Iraq's claims about biological weapons is neither credible nor verifiable. In 1986, Iraq used chemical weapons against Iran, and later, against its own Kurdish population. While weapons inspections have been successful in the past, there have been no inspections since the end of 1998. There can be no doubt that Iraq has continued to pursue its goal of obtaining weapons of mass destruction." -- Patty Murray, October 9, 2002

I wonder if there is any other way Palistinians can screw up getting their own homeland? If there is, better let them know quick as it seems they are running out of destructive ideas here and are actually having to resort to pretending to give a hoot.. http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2003-09...estinians_x.htm

If I ran a grocery store and you came in and asked me for a tomato and I handed you a tomato seed and then demanded fity cents saying it was a tomato you would look at me like I was left wing or something.

Hi Craig. The biggest guffaw I got this week was after Bush spoke at the UN. France says that Iraq shuld be governed by Iraqis sooner than the US figures and Germany says too late, they should govern themselves immediately. LOL, these guys are the ones that a month ago wouldn't recognise the Governing Council period and now they are fit to rule a country? Talk about snitty bitches that don't know whether they're comming or going.

Black and white Riff. Everywhere inbetween is grey. At what point does white become black? 14, 15, 16,....87 resolutions? I would imagine that if the income tax people were owed money by you and you had told us for the fourteenth week in a row that the check was in the mail you can imagine that you would have by that time a seized bank account with legal proceedings comming your way if not there already. Then in court your lawyer would have the perfect defense; "only a couple more days were necessary and Mr Riff would have complied your honor." The Judge of course would overturn the taxation departments garneshee of your wages because you were only given over a dozen chances and should have been given what? 14.01? 14.03? 23? 12856 more chances? What Riff?

Or sweet right? I do know that a lot of our wels turned sour and deadly for breathing but not sure if that affects the oil itself.
