  1. When I was in the Airborne a few of our guys were tired of the same old same old and enlisted in the Foreign Legion. A couple of them turned themselves in to the embassy in London England. They told us that the Legion was infested with queers and alcoholics lol. One of my Sergeants back in the eighties served in Nam as a Canadian with the US. There was something like a couple thousand of them he said. I wonder as well what I would do if I were in my twenties and believed what I do now. Freeing a people, safeguarding democracy, adventure, pay and knowing you were there. Ahhh, USA bad, I'd wear my "Saddam Rocks" sandwichboard in downtown TO instead. More chicks.
  2. For somebody to ask a question of the pesident like "did (he) Clinton have sex" is in bad taste and totally irrelevent to any political process. Whoever thought of, brought it forward or asked it should be barred from politics altogether. For Clinton to lie under oath is unforgivable.
  3. I disagree, I think that it is our nature to grow and improve. To desire to be better and we use competition against ourselves as a guage. A saint wants to convert the world to the true religion while a bastard wants to enslave them to be the ruler. The rest of us are somewhere inbetween trying to be the best we can be while trying to retain a sense of normallicy.
  4. I don't mean to imply that any religion is wrong or invent a new one however, God or the creator gave us brains. Our curiousity is also a survival mechanism, it was not made to be dulled by repitition and mental confinment but to search for answers, different and hopefully better ways of doing ALL things. To convert to a certain philosophy or religion and then stop thinking, challenging and philosophising is a slap in the face of the creator. Trace back rules in any holy book and you would find very good reasons for them (if you lived two thousand years ago in the middle of a desert amongst a population of a few thousand max.) To have them blindly applied today is not thinking and counter to what the creator designed. If he had intended to have six billion obiedient muppets he would have made six billion boxes and wired us into them imobile.
  5. There is nothing inherently wrong with the system. It is however operated by humans who are by nature oppertuneistic. If all men worked equally hare, took equal chances, were equally honest and intelligent then capitalism would resemble socialism. The difference here is that socialism only allows a few to excel and control where capitalism gives everybody the chance. Evil? To the dumb and lazy sure.
  6. Better to not do anything. That way they will only hate Israel a little bit rather than a lot. If they exile him then they will really hate them and if they kill him then they will really, really hate them. LOL like what's the difference here? At least with a bullet in his head they have got rid of one more murderer.
  7. That is my contention as well. For a peacefull religion they sure like to hide violent offenders. Bunch of "New York Witnessess." While they proclaim "poor us," USA out of Iraq and all Islam is not to blame there is not much anti OBL chanting going on.
  8. You must be getting Nova to do your research. It was all the US could do to keep Turkey out of Northern Iraq. Remember? Kurds and Turkey being afraid that it might create an uprising with Kurds in Turkey. Wow, can't beleive you missed that.
  9. I have to confess Nova that while a businessman by chance I am not one by nature. That said to me capitalism is simply a way of keeping score. For example, if you live next door to me and have to go somewhere but don't have time to mow your lawn, you ask me if I could. I say yes and do it. Given the generous nature of our relationship I don't think about you returning the favor and it is a given that if I need something from you it will be provided. You go to town, you remember you need milk but don't know the grocery store owner. He knows me and also know that sometimes I mow his lawn and he would do something for me so mention that to him and he gives you the milk. You get what I'm saying so far right? You then go to New York and need a hotel room but the desk clerk knows you not and knows me not, you pull out a piece of paper with a picture of me and my lawnmower and tell him that in return for a room your friend will mow his sidewalk for him. Unimpressed he turfs you. You return home and vow to create a common favor/chit system and that's how money is invented. The interesting thing about money is that it is transportable both physically and verbally and it needs no maitainence to remain as it is. I mow lawns in my hometown and you bring me milk and items from all over the world. I never have to get off my mower. As a matter of fact, I feel good so I mow a lot in the summer and when there is five feet of snow on the ground you still bring me milk. One day I have so many markers out that I decide to buy another mower and convince Riff to ride with me. Being a cheap SOB I don't give him much so along comes the chit police to slap me on the side of the head and voila! I pay Riff what he is worth. Soon I have an empire of mowers and people from all over the world are sending me fruit cakes, frozen food and all sorts of stuff that doesn't keep. I need to get a better way so ask those people to send favor chits in place. They do and I hand them to an unscrupulous banker who pockets some of them because I don't count that well. You suggest a way where if you give me some chits then I can mow better and can set Riff free to do something else in a place he will be needed more so I end up buying a mega mower and poof! He's gone and I make more money. Being honest I give you your share every day and we are happy and our expirement in capitalism works well. If I am not honest then our experiment in capitalism does not work. I suppose the point of all this is, that if I were going to steal from you I would do it anyhow. I would steal your shovel, your knife, anything that I could. Money is not evil, it is an object, a return of labor that is transportable. And being an object it is subject to the same fate as a possession. An honest man will not steal it and a dishonest one will. Capitalism is a system, systems work well but can be manipulated by the dishonest. The system itself and the objects at work within it are inanimate and are neither evil nor good. Also, like any system it has to be maintained to change with the times in order to suit present needs. To some who cannot keep up with those times it may seem evil or unmanageable but that is where adaptation is needed. If to some it is a God then I'd say the problem lies with the individual's sense of reality. Capitalism is a way of getting materials, equipment and manpower to work. It is mobile and can be instantanious and produces equity where none existed before. Without it how would you send food to starving peole half a world away? Why would the pilot leave his family at home to starve so that he could fly the food? If you hand him a large summer sausage maybe he does not eat that. Money and capitalism are the only things that keep this world of 6 billion people alive.
  10. Might work for everybody else on the planet. I wouldn't go for it because I enjoy my life the way it is. Most other people probably are the same so ..... no. It wouldn't work.
  11. A tragic mistake. Back at the end of open hostilities in Aganistan we lost some of our own guys to US friendly fire as well. I knew one of the guys who got killed. These things do happen and although part of every war, they are terrible and unexpected. What would be even more tragic would be if the Iraqi people allow militants use this as a rallying point to stir agitation. If you read further down the article you will see Powell commenting on the timeframe for Iraqi self rule to take place so there is an end in sight I hope.
  12. Nova, once again a two second google search gave me the answer to a couple of the facts you disputed with Craig. something like 76% illiteracy rate for women in Iraqhttp://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/social/illiteracy.htm As for Canadians leaving for the US and better jobs you can read the Forum archives to verify that. This is the UN search engine where you can verify or counter some of the points made. I didn't bother to wade through it but you can in order to counter Craig. http://www.un.org/search/ Nova Nova, there is every Dem in the US trying to find dirt on Bush. Do you think for a moment that they are going to sit on something? They have nothing for one reason; there is nothing. Blair was cleared the other day on that intelligence thing too. BTW, do your own searches from now on.
  13. We do know that Turkey was going to join then backed out. The US had offered them billions and they tried to keep the loan but the US declined. It was highly publicized so if you have further info of bribes rather than speculation bring it forward and strengthen your point. Right now it's pure speculation on your part that most were coersed.
  14. I must admit Nova, this would certainly fix the ills of the world quite well. Can you now figure out a way to get depleted uranium to exit the hole in the ozone layer and close it afterwards? Now, to be practical, how are we going to get everybody to convert? We in the west are the least of the problem in this aspect as the Militant Islamics will kill you merely for speaking of this.
  15. Do a quick search for "Iraqi Polls" and you will find all sorts of stuff on what the people themselves think. It blows the left out of the water.
  16. And you arrogantly assume that the rest of us live in a vacum? You don't get out much I can tell. If you havn't heard, civil liberties and the cultural mosaic are firmley entrenched in our society. To have me beleive that you have the monopoly on it is ludicrous and small minded. I did a two minute google to find out you are full of it. Try it yourself. While you complain billions of dollars and human resourses are being injuected into the Russian Nuclear Security apparatus by this country. And before it was 100% talk and useful stuff until action had to be taken. Now once again after the Iraq invasion it's less than 1% killing and 99% useful and talk. Unless of course there is a big shooting war happening now where innocent lives are being taken that I havn't heard of. Are you referring to Iraq or Afganistan? In both cases great care has been taken to ensure the culture remains while democracy is nurtured. No US soldier is running around ripping veils off women so what are you talking about? Where are these moderates being killed systematicly? If you are reffering to a single comment posted on this thread please address that particular poster and not include it with your discussions with me. Nova, I must add that your entire debating format sucks. You give rapid fire rhetoric ie; "killing moderates," then when somebody responds with well thought out counter arguments you then counter with unsubstanciated one line snippets of - once again - RHETORIC or disinformation, or insults. Comon Nova.
  17. Nova, I think that you are purposfully not reading what people are telling or trying to convey to you. Islam, while a different and strange world to many North Americans is not to blame directly for the ills of the world. They do however, not contribute a whole lot to the capture and cessation of the violent fundementalists who threaten world stability. In fact, some places host these men like they were paying guests (which in many areas they are). While others are afraid to ask them to leave in fear of losing financing or worse, being physically harmed. I tried to tell you this last night but you may have glazed over it for some reason. Most people in the west want to learn more about Islam and fundamentalism. They have no big problems about having Muslims living among us and even welcome the cultural diversificatin it brings. Living in Hawaii you may not be exposed to all this and might miss a lot of the interaction that takes place here on the mainland. Craig and I and most others on this board deal with Muslims in our day to day lives. Even in remote communities in Canada they are entrenched in our society. To refer to us a fanatics and closeminded is indicative of your knowledge or your lack thereof rather than ours. Now the point I would make is that time is short. WMD are becoming more readilly available to those who would use it without controls, rules and any rational other than they are mad about something that happened that day. Most of the population of the Middle East shares the same values that you and I do which is a future for our families and all and progress for the generations to come. In the world of the fundementalists only one man who happened to get up on the wrong side of the bed has the control, surrounded by worshippers who are trained to obey and know they will go to Allah with a great reward. They are a hair trigger. You think we should understand them, but for some reason you don't think that we already do. We can adress Islam continually as we always do but these people have a gun to the West's head and survival takes priority. Part of the ongoing war on terrorism is understanding these people. Don't worry Nova, some of those in the fight are thinking a few steps ahead of you. Some of them are Muslims, Buddists or whatever. And many are even so left wing they make you look like Mussolinni. It's also not just simply a case of killing them, we also have to make sure the conditions that empowered them are rectified as well. That means aid, investment, immigration, cultural integration and all sorts of goodies.
  18. Hi Nova. To answer your question, the reason why is that it is common knowledge. Same reason as why the President does not hold press conferences to tell you that the sky is blue. Here is a short unscientific poll I came across, there is many more (hit Iraqi Polls on Google).
  19. Actually Nova, economic policies enacted by the Federal Government take years to bear fruit. If you have compaints about the economy right now it is Clinton. We have yet to see if Bush is better or worse. BTW, I thought you were a Buddhist or something, are you also a capitalistic type of Buddisht? A Fiscaluddist? OK, maybe a Baffleboondoggleuddist?
  20. Good post Lonius, None of them do. They all attempt to instruct the user on things that require freethinking, applying the golden rule to situations that change day to day, generation to generation. I don't think this thread was intended to ask what we think our beliefs are so I'll try to explain this with the Santa analogy, which was quite funny BTW. What if you read the instructions wrong and wore the suit inside out? Will you go to hell? I doubt it, any rational being would see the devout intent in your heart and let it slide. By this theory many who have commited atrocities in the name of religion will be unrewarded if they did it by beleif and rewarded if they somehow felt uneasy about it. It also means that teachers can change the rules to suit the times; burning animal flesh on a stone alter is not practical in an office building to thank God for a successful stock trade so we can replace it with something more appropriate like thanking God for our health and family in private prayer. The one thing that has never changed and has remained constant throughout the eons is the heart of man and what his God expects of him - BE STRAIGHT WITH EVERYBODY, YOU AND I INCLUDED. No matter what culture explorers of old encountered, no matter how remote and untouched these civilizations were they all had this fixed idealology. I think it is a natural instinct of all primates It was only when books made centuries earlier, that made sense centuries earlier, confined man to those archeic rules gave man loopholes to circumnavigate the prime rule. Ie; Adultery - Well, they are not really married as only engaged. So if I have a quickie before the wedding I'm still sinless. Anyhow, I'm rambling. To me it comes down to whatever floats your boat. To retain traditions is great, if they infringe on the main rule then they should be changed. Like Nuremborg, to say you were only following orders is not good enough. God created free thinking beings for a reason, otherwise he would have made six billion muppets.
  21. Hi Lonius, I consider myself right wing and agree with your views on workfare. Everybody can contribute. I think however, that your generalization of how the right wing hates government is wrong. Sure, the Michigan Militia and Idaho suvivalists fit your slot pretty good but none are here on this board. Rather we have purpose for government and most of those are in line with what you believe, defence of our country from threats ie; terrorists, SARS, illegal immigrants, drugs and so forth; accountibility in honor and fiscal restraint ie; not throwing money away in vote buying scams and $400 lunches. Given this simple guideline and the failures on all those counts then yes, I would prefer to have no Governent than this Government. Common sense is common sense no matter what wing you are. I don't think that Government involement is a bad thing but do think that most of what THIS Government involes itself in does nothing to encourage people to stand on their feet and put iron in the spine of this country. I see nothing ranting or fanatical about that. Either should you as this seems to be pretty much on par with your workfare comment.
  22. Where is the shoot first mentality? In both Afg and Iraq politics and negotiations with a proved enemy occured. The end is hopefully countries that have with our help thrown off the yoke of oppression and virtual slavery. As for the best commanders and all I would imagine that there is more than one Arab expert at work in the State Department and surely to God there is at least another one in Iraq somewhere. That comment is dumber than dumb. It implies that you are dumb, that all around you are dumb and I am supposed to take it from a dumb person that everybody else except for people living in a world where they all but allow terrorists to walk and operate amongst them are smart? We do understand. What part about aid and money and goods and democracy and self rule and protection from terrorists don't you get?
  23. I never said to get rid of Islam. Maybe somebody mentioned it as a dream of theirs but as a practicality it is unworthy even of discussion. Yet you bring it up time after time. We all know that the terrorists we fight are a small part of the population. Yet where are they? Everywhere, they are entrenched into Islamic society like a cancer. Let's see Nova, so far we have gone from letting Islam off the hook, sending all our money and resources into Russia to secure Nuclear weapons, turning SA over to possible Fundementalism and now we are to invent cold fussion. If the time frame for this change and worldwide PRACTICAL APPLICATION is anymore than say six months we had better think about being attacked by terrorists. Matter of fact, has it ever occured to you that OBL and his ilk just want to be in charge? You know, only use Anti America as an excuse so they have a job so to speak in which case any aid/new energy source/political solution and time frame is redundant. On another note, why do you think that America is not trying to understand what is going on? I would hazzard a guess that there are more than five thousand Arab experts trying to understand what is going on in Washington with another ten at least in the field. Billions of $ are being spent in aid and loans to kick start economies everywhere in the Third World. It's your country and you only think you attack enemies? Why is food, clothing and equipment being sent into Afganistan continually? Same in Iraq? You do realize of course that nowhere is it any country's responsibility to rebuild a vanquished foe yet you ignore that in every argument. The poor Muslims you say. "the terrorists are only a small part." Point them out to us, stop them, stop harboring them. Help us and we will help you is the simple message. You see America as bad. You think there is all the time in the world to make this happen. This from an American two years after 9 11. Any change effected would not stop the immediate threat. Shoot first ask questions later. You have no idea of what a soldier does. Battle proceedure, identifying EFFECTIVE enemy fire, target range and indication and then wait for the fire order. You think actions are taken on the flip of a coin or on a dare? Threat, possible responses are considered at every level. That's why sometimes food is dropped, sometimes leaflets and others bombs. There is more than cowboys in the arsenal but you knew that didn't you?
