Canadians don't really have much recent experience with minority governments. The last time a minority government fell with the government actually controlling the timing of the election was 1974. Trudeau won a fair-sized majority after that. -

Assurances are fine and dandy, provide a little proof for CBCs reports on adscam being "completely unbiased". I am opposed to the CBC being funded by taxpayer money while clearly promoting a political agenda. Become neutral or quit taking government money.... What are you talking about? I have no issues with this forum. Seems like you are trying to divert the issue Gerry. Your attacks and misinformation are tiring.... -
CP: Mackay controversy flares anew
Ricki Bobbi replied to gerryhatrick's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Take a look at the main page of the Web sites for the CBC, National Post, Globe and Mail, CTV, Toronto Star. Watch today's Question Period. None of them mentioned this scandal. It's a non-issue.... -

You really can't abide by anybody having a different opinion than yours, can you Gerry. The CBC is painfully left-wing. Of course they had to report the details of Adscam. The bias comes in the way they present the information, the time they spend on stories and their placement of stories in any given story. The day of the eleciton George Stombopopadopolous said "Stephen Harper is leading. There is still time. make sure you get out there and vote." That is a bias which shouldn't be funded by taxpayers on a supposed "news" show. -

Ahhh, the Conservatives did campaign on that. I take it you think think that Quebec shouldn't be able to have another referendum on separation. Or is a vote only final on certain issues? -

It's a community radio station in Edmonton. -
No. An ND MP quit the caucus after losing her riding association's nomination, which followed her decision to go against a signed promise she made when she was last nominated (to either support the SSM bill or abstain). Bev Dejarlais, the NDP MP in question was 'relieved of all parliamentary duties' when she voted against SSM. She quit the caucus and sat as an independent right after losing the nomination for the January election.

The Bloc threatening to BRING DOWN Harper!
Ricki Bobbi replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The leader isn't responsible for an inept campaign? Leaders are always responsible for the campaign they run. Martin's mistake was thinking his campaign team in 2004 did a good job they barely queaked out a minority when they should have won a majority. Martin used the same campaign team in 2006. Had he recognized the mistakes made in 2004 and shaken up his team he might have won in 2006. Guess it's a good thing he didn't! -

Ricki Bobbi replied to SamStranger's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's exactly what will happen. It will be interesting to see what that issue is. Whatever the issue is that will be the focus of the election. If Harper and crew pick an issue shrewdly they will deserve to win a majority -

Currently waiting for Question Period, but I think the issue has pretty much played out. MacKay should've apologized, but it's too late now. Seems like Harper and crew are taking a page out of the Chretien playbook and it looks like it is working. -

I don't think getting rid of the GST altogether would be better politically than the targeted tax cuts Harper proposed. Look at all the howls for cutting the GST and cries for tax cuts in other areas. Abolishing the GST altogether would take serious cuts in spending or increases in other taxes... -

Oh don't be ridiculous. Lying in parliament is routine. But it's like a court of law. It has very stringent rules of evidence. You need to be able to prove without any shadow of a doubt that a lie was a lie. Thus cabinet ministers routinely get up in the house and lie, but if you can't prove it, well, so what? good point. The Liberals weak attempts at a double-standard on this issue are probably why it is all but dead. The people who are trying to keep it alive are the ones I want to see run the Liberal campaign next spring... -

How about cutting the vast sums the CBC gets from the Feds to the same level per viewer that CTV gets. That would save us about a billion I figure... -
That article doesn't mention Winnipeg being under-represented in a PR system...

Who has he belittled for practicing that? Never said that Harper came up with the letter all by himself. He was a private citizen when he wrote the letter. He never advocated two positions on the topic simultaneously. How did he "run the party within the context of empowering the provinces"? What moral victories did Chretien ever seek? He was tough-nosed and focused on winning. That's why he won. Harper's government has been far more ethical and accountable than the Liberals they replaced. You hope he will get nothing more than a minority. Completely agreed that Harper is a polarizing figure. There are a few swing voters. The Conservatives picked up six points on the 2006 election over 2004. Two or three more and they will be in majority territory... -

She didn't say *anything* about Harper. All she did was post a 'witty' comment with a cut and paste job of a hack piece attacking the Government. She could very well have been trying to mock tthe article. I post many different things here. Some are considered responses to political news or views posted here. If somebody is just here to attack the Prime Minister or the Government without an open-mind to considering others viewpoints they shouldn't expect a free ride here. I have to say, the bias in your posts is clear. If you want a board where everybody will share your views and your disdain for the Government I suggest you try Rabble.ca. -
How was it unfair to Winnipeg? Obviously they got ten more members in 1958, but could they have gotten the extra ten members and still have used the proportional representation system? I am interested by the idea of PR and want to understand more about it. Intuitively Mighty ACs argument makes sense to me.

Your objections to Harper in this post are baffling. The 'firewall' letter is all about strengthening Alberta's position in the federation. Replacing the RCMP with an Alberta Provincial Police force, forming an Alberta pension plan and collecting Alberta income taxes separately are the main components from the firewall letter. These are all pretty shrewd plans, but they are the job of an Alberta Premier to institue NOT the Prime Minister. He ran for the leadership of a Federal party. Why would he push the agenda that falls in the realm of provincial responsibilities? This defines him as an opportunist???? It's all about what works for him? Hmmmm, that is politics. Moral victories are for chumps. Preston Manning took the high ground in the 1997 election and missed out on holding Chretien to a minority as a result. Harper's Cabinet is disciplined and speak with one voice. There is nothing wrong with that. It's all about Steve because he earned it. He ran a smart, disciplined campaign. His Cabinet ministers are publicly respectful of him. Nobody knows what goes on in the Cabinet room. Cabinet secrecy exists for a reason. A disciplined government speaks with a unified voice. These are virtues for Harper which will help him win over swing voters... -

Ladyjen, Great post. It's oh, so predictable you'll be attacking Harper 24/7.... Why do people join message boards if they aren't going to say anything on their own behalf? -
Because? What the hell does talent of the adverising logo mean? Talent of the ad firm? Do you believe advertsing has zero effect? Easy to be a naysayer, but without an alternative you look incredibly weak...
