  1. You don't think reducing fossil fuel use will benefit the environment? Wow, I don't have the time to combat that kind of ignorance.
  2. For now. Growing up Sansa just wanted to be a traditional, respectable lady while Arya was the independent and adventurous type. It seems that years of mistreatment and hardship are about to change that and make her an active player in the game of thrones. However, as Kimmy mentioned, based on the track record of this series there is a very good chance she will not actually achieve the justice we all want for her. I think she will, and a Stark will again rule Winterfell just before winter arrives.
  3. At one time it was acceptable for manufacturers to simply dump chemical wastes on land or into water bodies. This practice was found to be harmful, regulations were added and some people and businesses faced hardships through no fault of their own. It's unfortunate that progress makes certain business practices nonviable; however, it would be far more unfortunate to stall progress and permit harmful practices for the sake of outmoded operations. Business practices will adapt to the predictable rising costs or die.
  4. Ideally a Carbon tax would have increases pre-scheduled at regular intervals, long in advance and be made roughly revenue neutral through either income tax reductions or dividends paid out at tax time.
  5. Suncor CEO thinks a Carbon Tax is the way to go The president and CEO of Suncor Energy Inc., Canada’s largest oil company, is willing to pay a carbon tax, but thinks it should apply to both companies and consumers. “We think climate change is happening,” Steve Williams said at an Ecofiscal Commission event Friday in Calgary. “We think a broad-based carbon price is the right answer.”
  6. Was that a weapon? I couldn't tell what it was. The table is now set for the big finish to the season. Sansa will kill Ramsay during the war in the North, Reek and Brienne will help out in some way. Cersei will be humiliated but survive and retain power. I'm not sure what Daenerys will do. I suspect Ser Grayscale will get back into the friend zone and Tyrion will be part of moving her towards conquering Westeros. I wonder when Varys will rejoin the plot.
  7. Scrotal pump? I hope the technology improves before I ever need such a device. I'd like to be able to manage the mast with a smartphone app.
  8. Wow, for every one Catholic convert, 6.5 Catholics leave the church.

What will save their souls ? Carbon taxes !

Nah, carbon taxes are used to help fix an actually identifiable problem. Soul saving is a bit more fuzzy but hey, donate heavily to that collection plate and Im sure you will be OK.

  9. Oddly enough Harper is loaning hundreds of millions to foreign car makers that don't manufacture anything in Canada whatsoever. They've loaned more money to VWs Mexican operations than Mexico has.
  10. "Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the Mounties were just obeying the will of his majority government. “The government, the Parliament of Canada, has already decided to abolish the long-gun registry,” Harper said at an event in Windsor, Ont. “The RCMP have acted fully within Parliament’s intention in destroying the data in the long-gun registry.” Harper said the dispute is over contradictions between the Access to Information Act and his government’s legislation to end the long-gun registry. That is not the case. In fact, the dispute revolves around the RCMP refusing to disclose gun registry data while the Conservative bill was still being debated and not yet law, then destroying records it knew were under an active investigation." http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2015/05/14/information-czar-warns-rewriting-law-sets-perilous-precedent.html The mounties broke the law, as requested by the Conservative government, and now Harper will pass a law will retroactively to get them off the hook. This is a move we'd expect from Putin.
  11. I was interested to see how the partisans would defend Big Brother's retroactive get out of jail free card. I expected the usual 'but Chretien did bad stuff' type comments, but I never would have guessed that someone would have attempted to call the Information Commissioner a biased anti-conservative. Wow. The paranoid delusion is strong with this one.
  12. I completely understand the social aspect, along with the enjoyment and benefits they bring. I participate in group activities for the same reasons. It's the answering or putting aside questions part that I'm talking about here. Belief is required for the 'God did it' answer to hold any value and as I have mentioned I don't know how belief can be maintained when people play so fast and loose with the, so called, word of their god. I suspect most don't read the bible though and just hear about the parts that support the chosen stance of their sect. I think that's why they say that reading the Bible is the best way to create atheists.
  13. The NT introduces the eternity in hell concept, still endorses slavery and tells us that the rules and laws of the OT still apply. However, your statement is an example of what I'm talking about. The scriptures are our only information about this god and his wishes. How is it that people have the power to cherry pick the passages they will abide by? If Christians accept that god was wrong about slavery or hell or shellfish or mixed fibers or subservient women, why can't he be wrong about homosexuality as well? I know that some sects have already ignored the couple of passages that condemn gays, and that's great. BUT, if humans have to ignore a god's word to behave morally and have to edit the scriptures to make them relevant is there really a need for this god? Plus, how is it possible to even entertain the idea of that such a god exists, when there is no evidence and the only material we have is so ridiculous and horribly flawed?
  14. I am looking forward to hearing why conservatives feel Big Brother Harper is justified in retroactively rewriting the law to cover up RCMP wrongdoing. I'm sure I've just overlooked the positives in being able to change a law in the past. #BananaRepublic

He's mocking the fuss being made about C-59 by comparing it to the outlandish Republican hype over Benghazi.

I started a thread about C-59 on the Federal Politics forum. Report for duty.

  15. Good point, but it's like being morally superior to characters like Walter White or Tony Soprano. I just don't understand how people can knowingly dilute, twist, cherry pick and warp the messages in some horrible old books into something more acceptable for today, yet still believe they somehow represent the wisdom and instructions of an all knowing, omnipotent, supreme being. How can anyone still believe in a concept (without evidence), whose only existence lies in text so horribly flawed that mere mortal humans are left to invent excuses for it? Then after pretending away the sadism, rape, torture, misogyny, slavery, homophobia and fear they cite this damaged and disturbing character as the source of morality. It's like a relationship with an abusive, alcoholic husband or father. Indoctrination and mind control are powerful tools, especially when reinforced by a culture.
  16. I do think that it's great that so many Christians are reinterpreting or rebranding Christianity for the kinder, gentler world we live in. However, if humans are free to invent a new superior moral position for their god, doesn't that suggest that this god isn't real? Why keep the fairy tale baggage when humans are already superior to the gods?
  17. How many more years will they be paying Carlisle?
  18. I had a similar problem when I recently moved, though I was only tied into a reasonably priced tank based heater. The single line about agreeing to the terms of installed rental equipment is easy to miss in the reams of paper. Plus, my previous newly constructed house came with a rental heater from Reliance that I was able to cancel with a single phone call and no fees, so the rental clause in the my purchase agreement didn't sound very important. Despite the hard water in my area, purchasing a heater is still far more economical than renting. So after moving in I called National Home Services to cancel the rental agreement and found out the previous owner had signed a 10 year deal. I don't understand why people would buy anything from door to door, high pressure sales people. Anyway, Reliance has recently bought National Home Services so I'm hoping I their usual policy will apply to customers gained in the purchase and I can get out of the rental agreement early.
  19. Yes, it's important to have the flexibility to move from believing the bible is the inerrant word of a god, to some of it is allegorical but some is real, to let's pretend most of the book doesn't exist and God really just means love thy neighbour. Unless your neighbour is gay, because even though the book was figurative about the creation story, the flood, burning bushes, talking donkeys and snakes, eternity in hell, jealous killings, slavery, misogyny, shellfish, garments made of mixed fibers, etc. God really does hate fags.
  20. Wow! China's coal use is falling dramatically. In just 4 months China's CO2 emissions have dropped by the equivalent of 100% of UK CO2 emissions. That's huge!

And the question I have is why do you not believe anything the Canadian government says on the environment but eagerly lap up whatever a brutal dictatorship government with no free press has to say about its own environmental performance?

    3. Mighty AC

      Mighty AC

China has been constructing clean energy capacity at an incredible rate and the Chinese numbers have not been disputed in the past, thus it seems reasonable that using less coal has led to lower emissions. What is being ignored in Canada? I recall our stance was 'we must wait for the US to have a plan.' Yet, the US, China, Mexico and most of the world have plans to reduce emissions and we are on the sidelines looking foolish.

No worries...Canada is a minor sideshow for world "emissions"

  21. I don't think Stannis is interested in occupying Winterfell for a significant amount of time. Yep, this storyline line is about to go beyond the books.
  22. Yes, she has been dabbling in taking control of her destiny, but I think she is about to become a badass.
  23. The Conservative Government has lent $526 million to Volkswagen to expand its operations in Mexico and the US. "The government says the loan is designed to create opportunities for Canadian businesses to work with Volkswagen, but critics claim the money comes with no guarantee the manufacturer will buy products from Canadian parts makers. Volkswagen currently has no manufacturing presence in Canada." http://news.nationalpost.com/news/canada/union-condemns-crown-agency-for-lending-volkswagen-millions-753504 The Harperites have lent more money to operations in Mexico, than Mexico.
  24. I think similar words can also be said about anyone that would support him politically.
  25. There are certainly more common forms of discrimination in North America; however, I was surprised by the prevalence of this form in the US. I was not only surprised by the number of people that had lost their jobs for simply not being Christian, but also by their acceptance of this reality. The people I met weren't angry like I would have been; instead they just expect that their lack of spiritual beliefs will always eventually be discovered and they will be forced to find a new job. The normalcy is what disgusts me the most. Anyway, this thread highlights a form of discrimination that most do not know exists, perpetrated by those who proclaim to have superior morals. I think the opposite is true. We will continue to be led primarily by old, white, male, Christians until society demands otherwise. People in power will use any means necessary to stay there. Currently, we see conservatives taking some hateful positions because they expect to benefit from the religious vote. This similar to the practice of denying science and reality to obtain funding from the fossil fuel sector. Farces like these will only cease when voters punish perpetrators at the ballot box.
