  1. So your a former teacher. Well, things have change considerably. It's not your fault that you are no up to date with 21st Century Learning. I understand that, and that is no fault of your own. Maybe you should go to your local school and inquire about 21st Century Skills. Ask if spelling tests matter any more. Ask if long multiplication and division are necessary anymore. There is a bi push in schools for SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Learners don't grow socially or emotionally if they are asked to compete in tests. Project based learning where groups of learners collaborate on projects has been proven by research to increase learning. You probably haven't heard of project based learning, or social emotional learning. Here are some thins you may not be up to speed with. http://www.vancouversun.com/Making+grade+report+cards+ongoing+debate/9369888/story.html http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/2010/11/06/gradeless-report-cards-go-home
  2. Corporate taxes need to be raised and that money needs to be earmarked for public education. Private schools should not receive ANY funds from taxes.
  3. And you would lose. Not many people can teach. Most teachers now have masters degrees.
  4. And you might actually learn something by taking some time to read and understand this. http://www.bctf.ca/publications/NewsmagArticle.aspx?id=21900%20
  5. The teachers in BC fought for the kids when no one else would. Now teachers are having a hard time making up the time lost in classes. But you know who will get blamed? That's right. The teachers.
  6. This is a total fabrication.
  7. So because you operate a milling machine, it somehow makes you an expert on 21st Century Learning? Pffft..
  8. Trys? Or did you mean tries. LOL I could care less what you believe. You are wrong though. I am a teacher.
  9. I suppose you still think cursive writing should be taught, LOL
  10. I guess you are clueless to 21st century learning promoting 21st century skills( communication, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking) http://www.p21.org/storage/documents/4csposter.pdf The 3 Rs are 20th century skills. Your lack of knowledge on what is important in public schools these days amuses me.
  11. Knowledge is so overrated now. Life is not trivial pursuit. Real life consists of collaboration and creativity. Not regurgitating facts that anyone can bring up with a smartphone. On the question of prizing knowledge over skills, one only has to consider the information processing power of the humble smart phone sitting in our pockets or bags, which contains the capacity to access more information than we could ever hope to store in our memory by rote learning, to see the pointlessness in such a cause.
  12. Why we should never return to the three Rs. http://theconversation.com/why-we-should-never-return-to-the-three-rs-13179 I think maybe you should have attended a local WE DAY to see what kids really care about.
  13. Because educators are trying to promote a more tolerant, inclusive society that will benefit all humans. Others are using their power to give their rich buddies more control. That's why.
  14. Would you rather have the Koch brothers dictate what happens in public schools. The teaching of a collectivist society that benefits ALL is what is needed most these days. http://www.commondreams.org/views/2014/11/15/koch-brothers-sneak-school
  15. Fine. But those are not the main focus anymore. Embracing collectivism will make the world a much more inclusive place.
  16. So true. And TREEHUGGER.com is an awesome site for real information.
  17. Educators aren't ideologues. Educators understand the importance of collaboration and collectivism. That is why the mandate of public education has changed and why you don't see what is important these days. Isn't your wife a teacher?
  18. What exactly was left-leaning about a documentary that proved how bad McDonald's is for you? I don't see your logic here.
  19. Teaching kids to embrace a collectivist society is the most important aspect of public school these days. Like I said, it's not 1950 anymore, beaver.
  20. How can you judge a teacher who every day has to teach kids who live in poverty? Do you think those kids are going to do well on useless standardized tests? Do we want kids to learn meaningful thins or do we want them to learn how to fill in a bubble on a standardized test form? This isn't 1950 anymore.
  21. This is what WE DAY. Don't be misinformed by people here who turn against WE DAY because of a right wing agenda. http://www.weday.com/what-is-we-day/
  22. There is nothing "communist" about We Day. What a silly comment intended to make people who know nothing about WE Day think it is something it is not. WE DAY challenges students to make the world a better place.
  23. Supersize me was not a Michael Moore documentary. You lose credibility when you post falsehoods.
  24. I think the country would strongly consider lowering the voting age to 16. High school students are more engaged than ever and are getting fed up with the fact that their futures aren't as strong as some would like them to believe. Great things are happening in public schools as schools are paying more attention to social justice and social activism. I am all for letting 16 year old vote. They know more than most adults. Public schools are doing a great job forwarding democracy. It's sad that others want to keep the youth of the nation silent. Look at all the kids who have been socially active at WE DAY events across Canada. Kids care. Let 'em vote!!! http://www.portagedailygraphic.com/2014/10/25/so-heres-one-to-ponder--how-about-lowering-the-voting-age-to-16
