  1. The fact is, the Act has been violated for years and only the left denies it. Martin uses a private clinic. Layton got private surgery, then claimed the clinic wasn't private. Of course, it has "a swimming pool, a recreational centre, a fine restaurant," etc. just like all hospitals, right??? Ironically, only Harper (you know the extreme right-wing guy who has put Canada up for the bidding) has NEVER used private care. I am just waiting to see whether he will admit the system is flawed and allow more private care (which is clearly the right thing to do) or follow what the Libs and NDP (who don't care for the system but need the issue to carry their left-wing bases) do on it...
  2. Actually we had a great time until Mulroney and Reagan came along. It was Mulroney who invoked the Canadian Multiculturalism Act in 1985 http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-18.7/ which placed turbans on the RCMP, and opened the floodgates for minorities to lobby for anything they wanted. Another leftist who forgets that Mulrooney's Conservatives are not the CPC.
  3. BubberMiley, "Actually, Trudeau and Nixon hated each other's guts." That's true, but why the actually? I am not sure that Leafless implied anything differently. "Before that, Pearson and Johnson hated each other's guts." Not really though. It is true that Pearson was not a fan of Vietnam and after a speech in Philadelphia where Pearson criticized the Johnson administration, Johnson told Pearson "you pissed on my rug." However, the two countries generally respected each other and the issue was mainly seen as a partisan foreign policy disagreement, what with Pearson and the Nobel Prize. "Eisenhauer and Diefenbaker got along but were wary of each other. King and FDR were by no means close (King resented U.S. reluctance to enter the war and then their subsequent taking credit for winning it)." Again, wariness between federal leaders does not imply relations were tense between the people of both countries. My parents told me a story once where they were in a Montreal restaurant in late November in the 1960s and there was part of the restaurant reserved for, as the restaurant put it, "any of our American cousins," who may come along on vacation. And, I may add, you should know the Americans were a big part of the Allies winning WW II and everyone knows it. "Before that, the two countries were largely isolated from each other by trade, and their relations were strained by this concept called Manifest Destiny, all the way back to the war of 1812, where they had a bit of a disagreement." Relations were strained in 1812... ...but you forget (or deliberately disregard) the fact that in that 130 year interval Americans and Canadians crossed the border freely and immigrants from Europe in those countries became great friends. Bottom line: Trudeau planted the seeds of anti-Americanism that Chretien gladly watered...Martin cared for the garden. It's time for Harper to "prune the flowers" and plant his own seeds of pro-American/Canadian relations which will hopefully flourish in the future...
  4. Leafless, Good post. Trudeau's policies, many of which on the domestic scale I had no problems with, encouraged moving Canada farther and farther from the United States. He was very unpopular with the U.S. right. I forget, either Nixon or Reagan, called Trudeau an "asshole" during an interview with the media. Trudeau wanted to move Canada closer to countries in Europe with his policies...Brussels would just love those "Bilingual" Canadians, right? I am not sure Trudeau intentionally pushed anti-Americanism on the Canadian public but it was certainly an effect (as you correctly stated) of his actions.
  5. apollo19, I blame it on Liberal activist judges. Thoss who, for whatever reason, decide to take the law into their own hands and champion these iconoclastic measures which violate and drastically reform Canadian society. Not good.
  6. I don't know if the ROC heard about Karla when she was in jail but she had an awesome time. What, the relationship with French, the sex parties, pot smoking... Now she wants a passport... Canada is heading so far left I am unsure if Harper can reform this country with the slim majority the GTA took away from him...
  7. So the taxpayer gets to pay for the prisoner to do nothing at the same time as they get to pay someone else to dig the ditch. We don't pay them to do nothing, we pay them to [see first post and use your imagination].
  8. Gun crime sentenced...especially important to get right-wing voter turnout up in urban areas.
  9. "Bitter"??? I'm not sure what you mean. I simply outlined a very plausible political strategy. McKenna is a young and clever man. He is easily the most electable candidate, and he knows it. he Also knows the effectiveness of waiting waiting waiting. Let the Liberal executive get the Party finances sorted. Let the Tories have a little time to hang themselves. Let the lesser candidates declare too early, and never peak. Give the Liberal executive time to relaize he is the best choice. Give Canadians time to calm down after a couple of tumultuous years, when they'll be anxious and ready for a new face- McKennas face. Then ride up the middle on a white horse and claim the prize. It has been done before, what was that guys name - Bill Clinton? If you don't think this is possible, why did McKenna invest so much time in 2005 quitely cultivating support for a leadership bid? Do you really believe he suddenly changed his mind? Why? Why do you think he took the Ambassadors job in the first place? Isn't it the perfect place to be visbile but not too accountable, as he would be in Parliament? It was a terrific spot to be seen but not blamed. McKenna is a smart guy, and would be a formidable opponent for Harper. We have not seen the end of him, not nearly. Ah, Stephane Dion is said to be giving it a seriosu run...
  10. I heard people on local radio this morning say that taxpayers must pay for prisoners in jail who wish to have sex changes. In addition, we have to pay for their vibrators and other sex toys that they want. I couldn't believe it but after doing research: http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2003/feb/03020707.html I realize this is old news but I guess I didn't read about it then. It wouldn't of mattered anyway, what with the Liberals in power. Can anyone justify our tax dollars paying for this garbage?
  11. Says who? The Conservative past is as corrupt as the Liberal. Funny, I don't remember the Conservatives fixing elections... Then again, typical Liberal voter begging to be compared to Mulrooney...way to set your standards high Boru...
  12. How so? There completely unrelated but they are still linked together. How are they linked together? I don't follow. Neither do I...
  13. They should be trained to use them and then use them...why not?
  14. Uh, the latest I heard was that the Liberal Party debt is around $5 million, much less than the feared $20 million or so. Given the Liberal popular vote in the election, this dcebt will not be a problem. Everyone is talking about a Conservative victory when the Tories have a weak minority government. They won about 25 seats more than last time out. And this, despite a terrible Liberal campaign and an internal civil war. As to Kinsella, it would be nice to think that his kind of tactics were now in the past. But I don't think Harper won because the Canadian political game has changed. Next time out, Kinsella and his type will be working for the Liberals and they'll do a royal job on Harper and the Tories. And it'll work. The Liberal brand is worth more than the debt.
  15. Oh you never know....she might be deadly. I was talking to a "now-generation" professional lady (you know, yuppie type) and after we've both agreed that Belinda does not seem to have much under her belt except dad's billions, the lady waffled in the end and said: "well...it will be nice to have a strong woman sitting in power, you know." Belinda also doesn't speak much French.
  16. You claimed that the left wing press was painting Harper as anti-American. That's false, and that's what I criticized you for. Pay attention to what I write and you just might get it. The left-wing press made comments like "sending a chill down U.S.-Canada relations." What would you call that, an invitation to a Texas tea party? Witty, but no source. I'll bother to reply, and counter with "rightwing press" comments, when you actually back up your general comments. Until then, why bother? You just continue to waste my time. A common theme among your posts. Have a look at this: http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news...e2-9326e2c0bdae
  17. I agree climate change is happening. But I don't buy this its our fault concept. CO2 makes up a very small percentage of green house gases. 90 something percent is water vapour, which isn't our fault. Such a small addition in the grand scheme of things is questionable. I'm sure we are not helping, but global warming and cooling are natural processes. I believe this the position that most on the right see. Anyone that actually thinks there is no climate change at all, is either misinformed, or just not all there. The more important environmental issues is keeping our water supply safe, our fisheries safe from heavy metal toxicity and eliminating hormones and antibiotics from our beef and poultry. The brainless/dysfunctional Chretien government signed Kyoto and did nothing. Chretien, and not Harper or conservatives, should be blamed for Canadian greenhouse gases. Kind of felt bad for Stephane Dion at the Montreal convention...his tounge must have been quite bloody after biting it so many times defending Canada's hideous environmental record.
  18. They probably took a look at New Orleans and saw the results of 50 years of liberal rule. *shiver* That's one way to look at it. Some others would blame recent climate change, admitted by all except the radical right, for hurricanes that are coming in greater frequency and strength than ever before recorded. Yes, it may seem like I'm out on a limb, but at least I have something of an a rgument going, which is more than can be said for your brainless post. Boru, After your vicious and baseless attacks on me I am going to "go out on a limb" and agree with you. There is no doubt in my mind that the climate issues we are dealing with are a direct result of global warming and a dangerous increase in greenhouse gas emmissions. We need to bond together as a nation to do anything in our power to create a "Made in Canada" plan to deal with the environment as quickly as possible. You may call me a "right wing radical" for saying we need to dump Kyoto, but as someone who takes a very left-wing approach on the environment, I must say the Chretien government signed Kyoto and then sat on their asses while our greenhouse gas emmissions went up 24%. I didn't call you radical right wing, although I do figure you to be far right of center on most issues. I said that climate change is admitted as fact by all except the radical right wing. I am centre-right...I don't move that far right from the centre and I am not a neo-con.
  19. You claimed that the left wing press was painting Harper as anti-American. That's false, and that's what I criticized you for. Pay attention to what I write and you just might get it. 20. Supporting them by watching them get bombed too? Supporting them by rooting them on and hoping they'll get their mission accomplished safely...
  21. Which is why Germany, Russia and France joined in the Iraq inva...oh, wait a minute, they didn't go. Hmmm. It was not popular in their countries. Of course, when Baghdad fell they all wanted into that oil pie didn't they...
  22. We deported someone??? Is this a first??? I think I'm going to throw a party for it. Okay, I am flying the cognac into Calgary..."Cowtown"... from Montreal as we speak...
  23. "And, btw, we support those same governments, at least with our words, if not our deeds." Good point Argus but be careful...you don't want to shake up the "proud Canadian left."
  24. We deported someone??? Is this a first???
