  1. LOL excellent! And so he should. All you conservatives frothing at the mouth because there's no current leader... pfffft. Be patient -- it'll happen. You never know, the left and the centre could unite.... Layton as Liberal leader? Can you imagine the debates? I can just see Prime Minister Harper looking at Layton in shock after Layton thought there was a difference between the principal-agent theory and agency costs. You know, it says a lot that NDP voters want Layton to bail to the Liberals now... On second thought, Layton waited years to be opposition leader...if he becomes Liberal leader, he can be on the opposition benches for years...
  2. Why didn't they inspect the field before giving the kids the OK to play...
  3. This site needs a tin-foil hat smilie! You have a sordid obsession with tim foil that is getting me concerned...
  4. FTA Lawyer, You're right...I was not trying to say that prison is fun, only that I don't think they should have all those rights...I thought going to prison and committing crimes meant that rights were taken away from you...
  5. Almost 70% of Canadians support it: http://www.cpsa-acsp.ca/paper-2003/tatalovich.pdf That is an academic article link.
  6. In your wet dreams. Canadians for the most part are centrists. The minute Harper pulls the "morality rabbit" out of his hat, he can kiss his butt goodbye. Pfft. Marxist Lennonist, give me a break. Only because the Liberals have convinced Canadians they are centrists. Before Trudeau, Canada was a centre-right country and proud of it. Where have all the flags gone? Where have all our values gone?
  7. Spike, Good one... I'd go with Stephane Dion or Bill Graham. And if Graham, I may vote Liberal...
  8. Let's hold off until '08, when at the same time Hillary Clinton will be running against some backwater, redneck republican. I can see it now, President Hillary Clinton and Prime Minister Belinda Stronach -- wouldn't THAT be a switcheroo in North America! Bermuda would be looking pretty good at that point...
  9. Not being a supporter of Harper, I very much hope he does rule like he has a majority. He was elected on Liberal corruption, not his platform. I can't wait to see the same sex marriage vote! My prediction is another election within 18 months. People are already wondering WTF is up with Harper (shaking his kids hands....gratuitous anti-americanism) and that's after just one speach! Liberals will have done thier "time out" in the eyes of the public, and the election will become one of merits. So far, it looks like a sock puppet could defeat Harper if the issue becomes merit. Gerry, What would you rather him do, kiss his kids romantically on the lips? And gratuitously anti-American? WTF? My prediction is clear Harper majority in 18 months with the Marxist-Leninist Party in oppisition after the public decided whether or not they want a Belinda-Brison dream, the Bloc's separatist message, or the NDP's "government knows best" message.
  10. Leafless, you are imagining all kinds of boogeymen on the streets of Canada, and then generalizing your paranoia to anyone you see who doesn't look like you. Your original post that started this thread was about going to a polling station and seeing people you knew nothing about, noticing that they had a different skin tone than you, and assuming they were in cahoots with every other dark skinned person to take over the country. You can't see that there is inherent racism in that. I'm not denying that there is crime in our streets, and a disproportionate amount of it is committed by minorities. That doesn't make all minorities responsible for the crimes, any more than you are responsible for the crimes of Paul Bernardo and Clifford Olson, just because they were white. I agree with Melanie here.....Mel, do you think that part of the problem is with our immigration system? It is unfortunate for all minorities when a few bad apples give people like Leafless amunition for racist comments. But it's unfortunate that criminals be allowed to enter this country at all, and/or that deportation is not abrupt when new immigrants contribute to crime, gangs etc. I think the problem may lie with an immigration/ court system that allows criminals to stay in the country. Criminals support criminals after all and if we weeded them out from the start, I think there would be far fewer of them around. What is sad is that so called "native Canadians" (now there's a good one coming from a caucasion male)...can dwell on the few problems we actually have in this country relating to gangs etc. and who do not embrace cultural diversity and its benefits to Canadian society. Concerned, Well the sky may have fallen, because I actually back you 100% on this one ( ). Phew I was glad to get that monkey off my back too...
  11. I have to go with the middle ground between Argus and Geoffrey here. I agree that the commercial was awful and that land mines should not be used...in most cases. First, there are ways of using a metal detector, etc. to determine if metal is underground. That should have been the job of the individuals who constructed the soccer field. I don't believe land mines should be used but they are effective in dealing with wartime events. I guess it is a moral line that is hard to cross...
  12. I agree. I am not saying that Cindy Sheehan speaks for the American left, I am only saying that she needs to be careful people centrists don't start associating her with the leadership of the American left, as it could backfire on what you guys are trying to accomplish down there (I am taking you side here...)
  13. Concerned, I will officially call a truce with you on this thread because you have misunderstood my posts and because I don't think what I have written has gotten through to you. I am not shoving my opinions onto you. You represent someone on the left and me someone on the right. I am not trying to turn you into someone who is right-wing. Rather, I am trying to help you understand things that I think you're missing. You took Bill O'Reilly's quote out of context and you seem to believe that Ann Coulter speaks for mainstream America. I mean, if Condoleeza Rice made those comments, I would shut up and back you 100%. I may well be influenced by right-wing media. But then, you are influenced by left-wing media. That is our partisan flaw, right? We like hearing people on TV and reading about people and congregating behind people on this forum (like you with Bubber and flashman and me with moderateamericain and geoffrey) who we believe share similar beliefs and concerns as we do. I respect your opinions and your right to have them. Perhaps the U.S. (and Canada for that matter) are too complicated for one single right or left-wing interpretation.
  14. Bill Grahman isn't much of a leader. Kind of seems like a big baby in my opinion. Bug hypocrite for sure but I would have to see his platform again...
  15. I feel that it would be unwise for Mr. Harper to do so. The majority of Canadians desire the status quo..........with the inclusion of honesty and fiscal results. This course, would allow more Canadians to trust his leadership and prop-up his "centrist" following (most of us). If this occurs, the small "ultra" right wing cling-ons will disappear, and the moderates will prevail. Given the latest information concerning the Liberal leadership race, I see no other path for Mr. Harper to follow. Mr. Mckenna's(sp) disinterest in a run for Prime Minister leaves the Liberal Party very, very weak to say the least; Volpe , Brison, Stronach........you've got to be kidding me. Personally, my greatest worry is that PM Harper will hang himself with an overtly "Pro American" stance. Canada is in a very unique position right now (oil and gas), and short term victories with softwood and so on would be counterproductive. We have more OIL than the Saudis ever had, and we have 30-40 years to leverage that resource for gains before it becomes worthless. It's now... Canadas time. If matters are handled properly, we could become one of the weathiest nations on earth.............wealth means influence..............and finally as a nation, we could share our values, CANADIAN VALUES with any country in need......If they wished! No bombs, No B.S.. The Canadian Way. The right way. Think of the possibilities! : The "Canadian" way, more often than not, is the American way with lots of denial and more than a but if repugnance...
  16. This site needs a tin-foil hat smilie! Gerry, Can you not acknowledge that the CBC is not at least left-wing? When you're centre-right like me, you can't even look left and find the CBC. At least they tried to be a little less extreme pro-left-wing parties in this election. Let's hope the Conservative government makes the significant cut to the CBC sooner than later...
  17. Belinda and Brison... those Liberals have alot of future I tell ya. Geoffrey, Your going to have to give me a warning you post those hilarious posts in the future...my computer screen can't take any more random bursts of me spitting out my drink...
  18. http://www.canada.com/topics/news/story.ht...fc5a585&k=99500 I also heard Bill Graham might be in the running...
  19. You're right Shoop. But the Liberals are: (and I mean/say this sadly) 1) The party with the most urban support in a country that is primarily urban. 2) The only political party in Canada that is an established catch-all party that focuses on the "radical middle." 3) The only party in Canada that has the benefit of the doubt and only seems to lose when voters tire of their corruption. Your economic facts aren't wrong...but with the Liberals still 3-4 points give or take the margin or error out of power after all the scandal, I still say the party can sell.
  20. Its gotten to the point I feel more confortable and safe in Detroit than Toronto. This is a big one. The theory behind the gun registry never worked from day one. Good citizens will "register" guns and bad ones won't. It cost almost $2 billion for this failed program. Then the Liberals wanted to "ban" handguns...is this a democratic society or what??? Good citizens have the right to bear arms if they choose and use them in a responsible fashion. I hope the CPC will get tough on sentences and not on good citizens who wish to use guns. All you liberals will need your guns to protect yourselves from Harpers American invasion. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the gun registry hasn't helped solve any crime whatsoever. Am I making things up or is this true? I can't find anything on this. Geoffrey, It is true. I remember reading an article in the Montreal Gazette a week or so ago where they listed the facts. The gun registry does not and has not and will not do anything to reduce crime. Cocaine-addicted teens can still get AK-47s in Toronto while David Miller rambles on about the Americans this and the Americans that. People kill people, guns do not kill people.
  21. You go to the States a lot Hicksey...look at how much more selection they have down there. Better liquor selection with private liquor stores. Better tobacco selection with more brands. And then go in a food store, the difference in available items is unbelievable. Then try going to a mall... Our government likes to ensure we only buy from Canada so they can subsidize and Canadianize everything...I say...enough is enough!!! I hear what you're saying. I see so many things that I've always said would be a great idea just sitting on the shelf as they always had down there. I have no problem with Canadianizing. But I do have a problem with them shielding us from the innovation of others. They do have a bigger market, but I just don't see why it is we can't enjoy these same things. Maybe I am overtly biased because I think the selection in the West, while not as good as the States, is better than here because some companies don't make things bilingual (not that they'd need to west of Sault-Ste-Marie) there.
  22. I get a kick out of the "rise in China" segments on CBC. As a leftist network that I am sure esposes Chinese communist values over free-market American ones, the CBC can't wait for China to rise in order to (they hope) stem the dominance of American culture on our values. What CBC doesn't understand is that your average Canadian would rather watch "The Simpsons" than most Canadian shows. In fact, last year in the top 20 most watched shows, "Corner Gas" was the only Canadian scripted one there. (Source: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/show...50411/20050411) Somebody get the Liberal protectionist Opposition on this one right away...

  25. Sage, You make a good point. We need to see the rest of Judge Gomery's report and make a decision based on that.
