I'm not disputing the first idea, or the second for that matter. I'm concerned that a carbon tax in particular is taxing the wrong thing and won't do anything. I like the sound of making people responsible for their own goings on. Stop punishing people for working and getting ahead and start taxing on things that they do that degrade life for everyone else. Your making sense to me here, but can it be effectively done? And why environmental impact? People have negative effects on society in various ways beyond their environmental harm. Or perhaps the environment impact tax would be just one of many taxes on harms. What about a crime tax? It would be difficult to make but I suppose it could be done effectively...

Hollus, I agree with you... Stern can actually be pretty funny.

YankAbroad, Even the socialist NDP leader in this country got private surgery (he said he didn't it was private but like all gov't hospitals this one had a bar, a sauna, a fancy restaurant, and a pool... ) When the only leader in the country who hasn't used private care is the conservative one, you know it is about time we ended the in-name-only health monopoly)... What's with you and fiction TML? Are you deficient in the ability to stick to the truth? Or are you just a born liar? The clinic Jack Layton went to was covered by OHIP, thus he had to go thorugh the nrmal public queues, thus undermining your entire argument. And then you make yourself look that much worse with that blurb about a sauna, etc... Not only do you omit the facts, but you twist the lies you throw out even further. Read what you post, I'm telling you, any undecided voters who read through these forums will read what you write and then be scared off to the communist party of Canada, just tog et aw far away from your lunacy as possible. Boru, Your hypocrisy is telling considering that if I twist the facts around to my POV, you are doing the same. Prime Minister Harper is the only federal leader who has never used healthcare that was in a private clinic. According to the Shouldice Hospital website, in their hospital "you will find a billiard room, shuffleboard table, TV lounge, a common area to play cards, and a beautiful solarium for lounging and reading. Outside there are 20 acres of landscaped grounds to stroll about, including a putting green." Don't tell me a socialist leader isn't going to think that this is not for the "common guy" he claims to represent. You can swim in your insults all you want. I understand your frustration...the left lost. They are done...finished this time. I felt the same way in 2004. In the meantime, you can enjoy your tax cuts, Canada's military will enjoy its funding increases, and Canada will enjoy a better, more respected position in the world.

New Liberal Leader.......is it time for Justin Trudeau?
tml12 replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Another Trudeau to screw Alberta is your point fo view. To some, people say ALberta's greed does itself in. Interesting perspective about Albertas greed. Do you fell that Alberta gets more than its share of federal resources, is too greedy in that regard? Or do you feel that the amount that Alberta contributes to federalism is inadequate? I'm genuinely curious. I agree with that question. 80+ years of Conservative rule and Alberta has a great economy, minimal corruption, a great working ethic, and a stupendous degree of personal responsibility. After 12+ years of Liberal rule, Canada has loads os scandal, no armed forces, and no respect around the world. Sounds to me like Canada is doing itself in, not Alberta. -

LOL excellent! And so he should. All you conservatives frothing at the mouth because there's no current leader... pfffft. Be patient -- it'll happen. You never know, the left and the centre could unite.... Layton as Liberal leader? Can you imagine the debates? I can just see Prime Minister Harper looking at Layton in shock after Layton thought there was a difference between the principal-agent theory and agency costs. You know, it says a lot that NDP voters want Layton to bail to the Liberals now... On second thought, Layton waited years to be opposition leader...if he becomes Liberal leader, he can be on the opposition benches for years... Ahahahahahah.....whoa, my belly is about to burst form laughter. I'm telling you, between your weak jokes and your fictional stories...you're too much for me TML. The Conservatives win the weakest mandate in the history of Canada, and you're calling the Liberals the opposition for years? Wait and see. All it'll take is a solid leader for the Liberals to win back the Ontario countryside. Conservatives were not voted in for their ideals, nor were they voted in for Stephen Harper. That much ahs been made clear. Boru, Like I have done with other extreme left-wing ideologues on this board, I am going to take the high road and not comment on your sarcasm. I am glad you think you know why the Conservatives and our Prime Minister Stephen Harper got elected...to bring back respect and dignity to this country after years of corruption and moral bankruptcy trumpeted by Liberals. -
Boru, "Why have the subways of Toronto or Montreal not been firebombed?" You are a fool if you don't think al-Qaida wants to bomb Toronto and Montreal subways. Why haven't they? I don't know but there are terrorist cells in all our major cities and are planning attacks on us now. You are stupid if you think they haven't attacked us because "we aren't the U.S." That is another lie of the left...we are just as evil a capitalistic nation.

Colmes is known for being very quiet while Hannity screams and yells and takes control of the show. That is how I interpreted it...
-
You guys get Fox News there in London??? So how free is Canada...
-
Colmes is centre-left? Wow. I thought one had to breathe in order to take political positions? Well to be fair YankAbroad that comment was based on what I have read... We don't get Fox News here in Canada with a basic cable package...

Most Canadians are ignorant to the fact tht 80% of our economy is based on US consumer spending... but oh well. Geoffey, Are you defending the U.S. and its relationship with Canada? You must be anti-Canadian... Ah, the truth hurts, eh???

That is my interpretation, in other words, f**k protetcionism and protectionist policies...

[quote name='BubberMiley' date='Feb 1 2006, 09:43 PM' post='94192' Have you ever considered that having a stable population with a social safety net actually benefits you economically? Haven't you noticed that, since World War II when modern western social programs were established, western economies have boomed enormously? Do you think that's just coincidence? Have you also not noticed that the economies of countries where there were no such social programs, like in South America--which, by the way, was miles ahead of us economically until the first half of the 20th century--have tanked? Social programs create wealth for everyone in that they create a stable social climate which is good for doing business and attractive for investment. Bubber, The weed must be good in Winnipeg. I think I am moving there...

Cindy Sheehan: Endorsing Chavez?
tml12 replied to tml12's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
ACCORDING TO YOUR ANSWERS, The political description that fits you best is... . LIBERTARIAN LIBERTARIANS support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now I'll buy you two beers when you come to Montreal... -

Drea, "Most Canadians simply believe the govt has no business in the bedroom. Period." Ah, not true and also not all socially bankrupt lefty stuff happens in the bedroom. Frankly, what happens in the bedroom I could care less about.

Oh you're confused, I don't care if he shakes his kids hands. I'm just telling you that a lot of people thought it was wierd. I actually think it was just camera shyness.....I do, however, think it was incredibly stupid to allow cameras to film him walking his kids to school. If that's any indication of his intelligence then we're in for a treat. Isn't that what it's called when you stand up for Canada to the USA? Oh...I forgot......it's a Conservative government now. My father shook my hand when I was a kid. Coming from my father, who was a lot smarter than me when I was 7, that was a sign of respect. And Harper saying he'll stand up for Canadian sovereignty is a lot different than the Liberals saying "the U.S. is not our country," "Damn Americans, I hate the bastards," and other quite awful and dithering, anti-American remarks.
-
Why do you hate Canada? Way to answer a question with a question. You know quite well that is exactly how it is in this country. I had a friend of mine from TO who collected dolls and she raved about American consumerism. When I pointed out that she collected dolls, and that that was in and of itself a form of consumerism, she was speechless. "I said Americans were consumeristic," she said, "I am Canadian...I am above that and I collect dolls." No Americanistic denial and repugnance there...

Kudos for acknowledging that Geoffrey. I noticed that also. Martin got roasted. I also noticed that the amazing news that Harper was cutting off media questions 2 days before the election...followed by the reversal of the decision after it was reported got NO coverage on the CBC. It was news, especially given the Harper platform of accountability and transparancy. I think the CBC has been beat up by rightwingers and is running scared. Would you like to explain how CBC is right-wing? In this election, they were pretty fair and balanced, if only because right-wingers complained in the past and they didn't want to lose money under the possibility of an inevitable CPC government...
-
Shoop... You have to relax a bit. I am not disagreeing with anything you said and I have argued many times on this forum that CBC is far left-wing... I am just saying...in general...in whatever media in whatever country...you always have to look at the whole picture. No one here has been able to prove to either one of us that CBC is not left-wing so... I've got you back on this one...

Iraq's WMD Secreted in Syria
tml12 replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Well, so has the United States. The real issue is whether Iraq continued to possess WMD and whether they were "a threat to the United States". They didn't have any WMD, no active WMD programs, so the answer is no. (Even if they did have WMD, it can be argued they still did not pose a threat to the U.S.) So you have to examine other factors.
