And both had major backing from the major powers. Whereas nowadays even countries like Hati can't get anyone interested in their domestic messes. Well the russians are testing that theory right now with their oil supplies. And i think the germans would rather be dependant on other sources of oil than the russians.

There's always unrest in the third world countries, but i'm not sure i see how china specifically blowing up would make that extraordinarily worse. If anything there might be some provincial breakaway action (kind of like we saw when the soviets packed it in) but i'm not sure there'd be a whole lot of 'unusual' conflict. Certainly nothing that would ilkely be concerning beyond the concern one would normally feel for those in war.

I can see why youd think that but really it's not that bad. We might see a severe recession but the world would very quickly adapt and we'd be fine. Not without wounds and scars but not that bad. Economies and people are a lot more resilient than some would think.

Honestly i don't see it. China imploding (unless it breaks down to serious civil war) will have significant economic impacts of course, but remember that while many buy things FROM them very few sell things TO them, they keep their markets closed to others. I think that the biggest issue would be a lack of supply of various electronic components which would soon be taken up by other countries. That's one of the good things about capitalism, it does find a way to adapt.

Well they didn't build 100 warships in 2015 of course. They finished around that number - but that is not the same thing. Really they've only bulid 240 ships in 20 years. The fact that in one year they finished an unusual number means nothing. And the us production of large warships was higher than that in ww2 when they were trying. America's ship building capacity is vastly higher. And their other manufacturing is as well. No, they're not. They're producing more than they have in the past but not that many. Again, if the us were trying they would greatly outstrip that. China's at pretty close to max production, the us is not even trying. But when they do they can produce HUGE amounts of material. China simply doesn't have that kind of capacity. There can be no doubt. The Chinese are catching up but they're no where near the production capacity of or the quality of the ships the US has. Their newest carrier is getting up there, very impressive, but while they've closed the gap they're just not at the same level. But - we're really talking about production of war material here. How many missiles, how many shells, how many anti tank guns etc etc can they produce. And china can't hold a candle ot what the US and it's allies can turn out if they're getting serious.

Yes, to sane people this is obvious. And it would be fine as well normally. There's no law that says a media outlet can't have a bias, or can't tailor the stories it chooses to produce to appeal to it's target audience. As one american character once said "go ahead, i'll just start my own paper to lie the other way" Except - the CBC is publicly funded. And that's why people have a problem with them right now. If they get defunded they can go on their own and try to make a business model out of their bias;, but i think they'll have a hard time convincing people to give them ad dollars and subscriptions if they're being that selective.

Comfortably. China builds a lot of computer chips but they don't actually have all that much in the way of heavy industrial output capacity. I mean they're not exaclty without it but it's nothing compared to the us, and with the us, germany, britian etc etc added up china and russia can't even come close. Further china isn't actually supplying lethal equipment to russia yet. And if they do it will be on a fairly limited basis. They'll face sanctions for what they do so they won't want to go TOO far - just enough to get the russians to sell their souls There is no need for nato troops for ukraine to win, just nato equipment. With enough gear they can cause an insane amount of damage to the russians and the russians don't seem to have their crap together to fight effectively. Basically there is a small risk of escallation if we continue what we're doing now. If we stop and the russians feel they gained something then this will be happening again shortly and the risk goes up at that point until the situation stabilizes as it has here. Think of it like this - the us and allies let poutine have crimea in order to prevent the risk of an escallation if ukraine opposed that. But that has lead to where we are now and the increased risk that we face. And it could have been worse, so far the confrontation has been pretty manageable. So - there is an equivalent risk to doing nothing as there is dealing with the situation which at least we know right now The USA is far less likely to attack germany than russia is. Well.... attack them again anyway Are you trying to suggest that the US is an equal hostile threat to germany as russia is?

I'm afraid that's not true. They weren't "Forcably" put anywhere. You're thinking of the US. And first nations are not the 'poorest of the poor'. For the most part the yhave all the access to education and other resources they would need. Moreso than many poor people from other nations or ethnic groups. harper did more deals with more people than just about any prime minister in our history, it's true. But as i showed he was absolutely in their face when they did things he didn't like. Doing trade with countries is not an endorsement of the country of course. And it does give you a lever against them. If you've got no dealings with them then you have very little power other than the threat of war over them. Harper was often vocally critical, demanding, and aggressive with china. And that's when he wasn't just pissing them off (dalai lama sent them into apoplexy). And you know what? They did business with him and didn't call him little potato. Justin's weak stance had them holding our trade hostage, holding our people hostage And they didn't try to buy our elections.

I think you put at least a toe over that line. You suggested that it was appropriate for the gov't to set madates for conversion. That is not something that is done until the stated goal is possible, and you strongly agreed with it. You have argued that essentially the only reason not to own an ev is because you can't afford it. And that time was closer to 150 years. Practical electric cars were only invented about 20 ish years ago. The fact we've moved this far this fast is actually quite an achievement. But, like the telephone we've got a very long way to go. We're not even at the 'landline in every home" stage, never mind the cellphone era comparatively. We're probably about 20-30 more years (optimistically) before we're really ready to eliminate the ICE option. It'll be at least 10 before the tech is even working in the labs, then there's commercialization. It'll happen. But - it's a ways off before we're ready
