no, you're not. You're a biological left winger who likes to pretend he's conservative. You're not conservative, you're "trans-political". We are not more productive than we were in the past in comparison to productivity rates today. we have fallen behind and are less competitive compared to others than we would have been in the past. As a direct result we're producing less value than others are and that makes us less wealthy. Sure. Here's the last 20 years - showing we have fallen behind almost ALL of the major players in productivity using the us as a constant. https://bcbc.com/insights-and-opinions/canadas-productivity-performance-over-the-past-20-years https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-lagging-u-s-productivity-growth-since-1980-statscan-1.638007 here's the next 40 years https://bcbc.com/insights-and-opinions/oecd-predicts-canada-will-be-the-worst-performing-advanced-economy-over-the-next-decade-and-the-three-decades-after-that We're going to lag behind all the advanced economies. Which means virtualy all the countries on earth will improve their productivity and qualities of life more than we will. So yeah. Looks like you were wrong across the board. We HAVE fallen behind, we ARE going to lag behind everyone, and you are DEFINITELY not a conservative.

Why blame anyone. You're trying to suggest that selling something you own at market value makes you a bad person. Or that purchasing a thing at market value makes you a bad person. Neither is true. The problem is we don't have enough homes. If we did it wouldn't be an issue . if you want to "blame" anyone then blame the provincial and federal gov'ts who created the environment that lead to that without consideration.

They're based on value - and value translates into per square foot rates obviously. And either way it's entirely relevant. The cost for the same home in taxes is more in toronto. Prices were higher in toronto 7 years ago as well. Cool story but that doesn't change the fact that people in toronto pay more for their property taxes for the same place. Well to work that out we need to compare apples to apples. And when you do that toronto is not the lowest. Lets start off and see how big the difference with Guleph really is. The average size of a home in Guleph is larger than the average in Toronto. So while the average price seems lower that's also for more space. To break it down properly you have to look at the price per square foot. Here : https://www.cp24.com/news/this-is-how-many-square-feet-300-000-buys-you-in-different-ontario-cities-1.6104612 so for guleph it's 435 sq feet per 300,000 dollars - and in toronto it's 247 So - if you and a guy in toronto both owned 300 k dollars worth of space - you would pay 3,551 dollars or 8.16 per squ foot you owned and he would pay 1,896 dollars or 7.67 Pretty close - and when you start going through some of the other areas around toronto and doing the math toronto is not the lowest. Windsor for example only pays 5.67 per sq foot. That's 26 percent cheaper than toronto. So toronto is NOT the lowest in ontario at all, it's not even the lowest in that general area. And even for more expensive ones like Guleph its pretty close. It's certainly not a big differene - about 6 percent. Certainly not 50 or anything. AND - as i mentioned earlier and that report you posted confirmed - their COMMERCIAL property taxes are actually higher whne you work it out and that allows the residential to stay lower. But if you raise residential without lowering commercial then people wont want to relocate to the area and bring their business. I realize this gets a little complicated. You can see the dangers of your original simplistic approach without considering all the variables . But in the end toronto is NOT the lowest at all, nor is it considerably lower than some of the higher ones. Raising property taxes would be a mistake.

It looks like it used to be back in the 30's but the factory for the area got shut down long ago. Seems like it's just kind of a residential district now with the old plant still standing but decomissioned. Apperently it got shelled early on and burnt down. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrialnyi_District,_Kharkiv whatever - i've never really been a fan of the cluster bomb ban anyway. War is the worst kind of hell and civillians will always pay the highest price for it. If the russians targeted those areas i don't care what type of bomb it was, it's still a shitty thing to do. But that's why it's best not to have wars. I don't think there's any real value comparing the 'moral merits' of one weapon's system over another until you get to the WMD's.

Unfortunately it's not just a daily gripe as Mike would propose. (he's on the left - the left doesn't like to hear bad things about social programs.) This has been well researched as far as canada goes. We'll be well below the productivity and quality of life average for most countries for the next 40 years. Which means on average our standard of living will go down.

Yes - but there's been a reduction in the cost of anchovy paste and whale blubber - both of which nobody buys - so it all works out Thats the problem with 'inflation rates' - they tend to include a lot of things not everyone uses. For the average person the practical or realized inflation rate is higher.
-
In the industrial neighbourhood? I think the name of the residential district is 'industrialnyi'. not that it's an industrial district. That confused me too initially - i wondered why the hell they'd have a playground in an industrial district

well - you can either have debt or savings. You can't really have both. You have a net -net worth. That's why it's "net" worth If interest rates go up your debt and savings will be affected about the same over time. so if you have net savings then higher interest will benefit you, if you have net debt it will hurt you. As to civil liberties - they are ALWAYS at risk at times of political unrest - and there's always political unrest during tough financial times. We'll see. It's a shame the kids will have to go through this.

Don't think so. When you look at what people actually pay per square foot it's higher. Remember that the value of properties in toronto is also higher - so the actual tax rate per square foot of property is way higher. That's why vancouver's tax rate per 1000 value is so low - the prices are so high that the actual rate per sq foot still works out to be higher. Here ya go. https://www.canadianrealestatemagazine.ca/expert-advice/canadian-average-home-prices-by-city-compared-334894.aspx So the actual tax for two properties which are identical - one in toronto and one in ottawa - is actually higher in toronto. So raising taxes would be a mistake Toronto already pays more. As per above. Uh huh.

I don't think you know what 'social democrat' means. It is commonly used as, and in fact defined as "noun A moderate political philosophy or ideology that aims to achieve socialistic goals within capitalist society such as by means of a strong welfare state and regulation of private industry." It does not mean that the party wants to control the means of production directly. Sooo. Would you say then that that would make YOU the 'nutbar'?

Didn't happen last time, won't happen this time. Remember they had to jack interest rates up to 20 percent thanks to the last trudeau. People will find a way to hang on, and those who can't will take the hit and turn over their house and move on. We'll enter a recessionary period followed by amazingly slow growth and people will struggle but they'll survive. Quality of life and services will be lower than they should be. It'll be a misery but people will suffer through it because in the end its ALL HARPER'S FAULT!!!
-
Well not really. The residential rate is fairly middle of the road - no where near the lowest but not the highest. But - when you then look at MULTI residential and corporate, it's a different story Those rates for commerical and multi res are fairly high - very high for the commercial. So no, the property taxes are no where near 'low'. For residential they're middle of the road (vancouver is half that) and for commercial it's already high. Jacking property taxes would be a mistake.
-
Well at this point i think it's mostly for political power. The gov'ts are worried that people struggling will be blamed on them (probably true) so they're spending the money to look like the heros and push the problem down the road. But as we can see that's a fairly short road. The "good" news is we will likely fall into a world recession, and that should help a little with inflation.
-
Well, it's a valid concern. I don't know that it's a BIGGER concern than all the OTHER problems caused by the war - a craptonne of people will get sick or die because of the war and that's just the way it is. And that will go on for a long time after the conflict ends, DU shells or not. War is really bad. And that's just the truth if we blame the Russians or the Ukrainians or nato or whatever. And in a war both sides are going to tend to use the tools available to try to win.

https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/canada-annual-inflation-rate-rises-124041246.html So... here's what's going on. Inflation went up as high as it did because the gov't dumped a buttload of money into the economy in unearned dollars. Arguably some of that was necessary due to covid but that's neither here nor there - that's what happened. As ALWAYS - that shoots inflation up. Which it did. So - in response the BoC tries to suck some of that money back out of the economy to cool it. They do that by increasing interest rates. ANd that will bring down inflation for the most part. At least down to a manageable level if not precisely to target. BUT - MANY gov'ts including the feds are responding to this BY DUMPING MORE MONEY BACK INTO THE ECONOMY IN UNEARNED DOLLARS!!!! When you send people 'relief cheques' - that makes inflation worse!! All those 'renatal assistance cheques just drive up the costs SO you've got the bank stomping on the breaks and you've got the feds and some of the provincial gov'ts stomping on the gas. This is going to be a disaster.

Well usually the guy who hauls off the blown up tank it's stuck in There's no direct risk of excessive radiation. There IS a short term risk of the dust. Obviously a high speed super hard object smashing into another super hard object (remembering that tank armour isn't just steel anymore) is going to produce a certain amount of dust, and that is radio acvite enough that if you inhale it then it can have a very negative affect on a person. Eventually it rains and that's all gone but while you're wrong to think ti's just some sort of general hazard for ever you're not wrong to say it does have some negative affect. But so do regular bombs and such - put it this way, no matter what more citizens will be dead in Ukraine from Russian missiles than british DU rounds. That would be interesting to know. Obviously we're told that determination is high and they're all for continuing till victory but it's not like they're going to report anything else. They're not exactly holding large scale demonstrations against it or the like so i guess there's still at least modest support, but who can say?

It's not her first foray into poltiics, we do have a track record to look at and it's not great. I may not have agreed with Jack's politics but the man got things done, AND he was willing to get in there and live as he preached. But Chow just doesn't have what it takes. she has the connections to get elected but not the skills to do the job.

well they've been around since the 80's as i recall, certainlly used in the 90's. And russia has them too btw. Everyone developed them, they're very very very effective against other tanks. The other material you sometimes see used is tungsten. But they're ONLY good for fighting other tanks, there's no explosive in them or anything. So it's not like they'll be shelling cities with them or the like. And i think you'll find that the "toys" probably weren't in the capital. I mean they know the russians regularly shell the city. I don't think you'll convince the Ukrainians of that right now. They're geared up and armoured up and trained up for their big offensive. I don't think they'll consider peace talks till that's over. If it goes well it would put them in a much much stronger position for negotiations. IF it fails they're not much worse off than they are now. For them there's no benefit to starting talks right now until they see how their offensive goes.

Well pretty red tory one might say And toronto is demonstrably not naturally conservative at all. Federally for example the conservatives have struggled inside toronto itself. But, hopefully you're right and they'll give her a pass despite the polling. Her husband was an amazing politician but she is not.
-
Dude - come on. Those aren't "bombs". those are anti tank penetrator rounds - they use depleated uranium because its heavier and harder than lead. THey put a very thin 40mm rod of the stuff in a sabot and shoot it out of a tank barrel to kill other tanks. It's been used for years - the us used it extensively in all of it's conflicts where it faced other tanks. NOBODY is going to care if they're used now - putin may posture for his people but this is just a standard anti tank round that everyone uses.

https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/poilievre-more-competent-than-trudeau-national-poll Some highlights: Just 27 per cent believe Trudeau has good judgment, compared with 45 per cent for Poilievre Forty-eight per cent of voters agreed that Poilievre is a competent leader, compared with 42 per cent for Trudeau. But when respondents were asked whether Trudeau and Poilievre hide their true views to make them more acceptable, the difference was huge: 56 per cent believe Trudeau does, and only 40 per cent think Poilievre does. Trudeau scored higher in 'kindness'. So - PP has been slowly but steadily climbing in all the important metrics for Many months now. People are becoming more and more comfortable with him and less and less comfortable with justin. At the current rate, in less than 12 months he'll be solidly in majority territory with room to spare.
