Wasn't "adopting and improving on" Reform/Alliance ideas what won Chretien a dozen years in office??? What in the article pointed to Harper paying off Quebec in any way? I don't see the rumours of a potential floor-crossing or two being linked to a payoff.

Wells is an interesting character. Sometimes he is dead on, like in the post above. Then he posts the name of every Ministerial Chief of Staff and Director of Communications, with phone numbers, on his blog to prove a point. Sorta strange those two acts coming from the same person. There are a few problems here temagami. 1. We shouldn't stereotype people who collect welfare. Are all of them lazy? No. However, you make the mistake of going to far to understand. *under no circumstances* are they lazy? Hmmm, then *under no circumstances* they should have to leave welfare, to follow your argument to its logical conclusion. (Oh wait, you were only talking about a specific case. But Morgan was only using a story about ants...) 2. Why would you call Gwyn Morgan my *good buddy*? Does that somehow strengthen your argument? Make me a bad person? You are making the same mistake Naci Sey made. Morgan used a story, but you extrapolated that he was calling somebody in your very specific case lazy because of your random story. 3. Do you even understand the role Morgan was asked to play? How many welfare moms are being nominated for government appointments? Sadly for the left, the opposition used their limited power too quickly and too harshly. This was a bad move for Canada, but will ultimately be a good thing as it makes it that much more likely the Conservatives will win a majority next year.

The irony of this vote is how any Liberal MP could vote for the motion. The Liberals paid lip service to Kyoto but didn't do much to actually meet the targets. Oh, excuse me there was the "One-ton challenge". Whatever... Calling this a "major defeat" is a little bit of hyperbole.

Manning won't seek Klein's job in Alberta So in a case of the utterly expected, Presto has decided to not running for Klein's job. Can't say I blame him. Running for office is a tough game. Yup. That's a dumbass move for sure. While it helps the NDP and the Libs with their base on the left, it hurts withcentrist voters. Helps the Conservatives with their base and swing-centre voters. Accountability will definitely be an issue in the next election. I knew we were in for an election sooner rather than later, but with moves like that the opposition just might force Harper's hand for a fall election.

Harper is moving in the direction you advocate. He's kept a lot of promises so far. Cuts in the GST and the other targeted tax cuts are definitely lessening the tax burden. It's a balancing act, but I think he prooposed the cuts that he made because of their likelihood of being accomplished.

I have a hard time *grasping* the situation because you through out terms like the "decay of federalism" without any support. We haven't *covered* an issue just because you said it is so. Provide some support. Do you have one actual example of this "decay"? It's hypocritical to prepare myself for the possibility of using French in the future? Believe it or not, there are jobs outside the Canadian federal service that require French. Have you ever thought that might be why I am studying French?

Come on. Let's not be crazy. Rae may not be that popular with many Ontarians, but he could still win a seat in Parliament. Remember Toronto is still pretty Liberal red. Two ridings quickly come to mind as easily winnable for Rae. York South-Weston and Beaches-East York. He definitely represented parts of York South-Weston in the past and I *think* parts of Beaches-East York. Maria Minna (current MP for Beaches-East York) has been around for a long time so might step aside easily. Who knows about Alan Tonks (MP for York South-Weston)? The riding is a better fit for Rae, but there is some bad blood. (Rae beat Tonks in 1987 provincially.) There are many other ridings Rae could win in...

That's why this story has absolutely no legs. I saw it mentioned on QP yesterday. That is the only reference of any kind I have come across in any English-language media. If it had any possibility of becoming a real story that could hurt the Conservatives wouldn't the Liberals (or the CBC ) have picked it up?

It's interesting looking at the two examples you gave. I'm guessing you are talking about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" that Clinton instituted. Very interesting how Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservative Government allowed homosexuals to serve openly in 1992, yet Clinton's half-arsed policy makes him a darling of the Canadian left. Bush's stem cell policy is actual more *liberal* than Clinton;s. I didn't believe it until I read this. Don't get me wrong, I think Clinton was a very good President. But I also think that Mulroney was a very good Prime Minister.

Those things shouldn't be easy. Neither should changing the constitution. If they really need to be changed there should be not only the political will for change, but also agreement on what would better take its place. Unfortunately, we don't have that agreement yet, on Senate reform for example, so the change is not forthcoming.

Diouf being *searched* is a gross overstatement of what happened. I think Sandra Buckler said it best that "there were no latex gloves involved" or something to that effect. None of these *incidents* are serious. Over even indicative of any overall pattern. More sad attempts at creating controversy by the Liberals.
