  1. Because we aren't giving mechanics the power to control a budget worth close to half a Trillion dollars a year or the power to change laws that govern the way we live our lives.
  2. I have not stated that I support the OLA. The bigger question is how do we proceed now that it is a fact of life? I do believe that the *benefit* that would derive from dismantling/repealing the OLA would be far, far outweighed by the costs that would flow to Canada from the reaction in Quebec. Why don't you share my fear regarding Quebec separation?
  3. Are you drunk? That doesn't make any sense at all. Polling definitely helps. The key is be able to sift through the data and spot the trends. Guaranteed that SES will have a lot of people listening to them during the election next year.
  4. With the Oil making it 2-2 with a dominating win tonight it's very unlikely you will get your Sharks in 6 prediction correct. Hopefully the Oilers have Toskala rattled. If he can't return to the superhuman form of games one and two the Oil should be able to close it out at home on Wednesday night!!!
  5. I dug back and found the SES Research results from 2004. They came the closest to calling the big Liberal surge at the end of 2004. The did call a Liberal minority. Only missed the CPC vote by 0.4%. 2004 Polling Results Where is your support?
  6. Is that important to the discussion at hand? Uhhh, yeah it kinda is. We started out with you saying the following. I am just trying to figure out if you actually know what you are talking about or are just pulling terms like *spin-doctor*, *media analyst*, *speechwriter* or *image consultant* outta your butt. But your attempt at deflecting the question tomorrow tells me that you don't. It goes to establishing credibility.
  7. I apologize. I didn't realize that you saying something, without proof or support, constituted a discussion and automatically closed the subject for future consideration. The poll wasn't an approve/disapprove question. It was a vote intent question.
  8. On the flip side the Liberals are staying in the news with almost daily stories about the leadership race...
  9. Are just the jurisdictions within the Constitution arbitrary? Or is the actual division of powers within the Constitution arbitrary as well? For example, s. 109 of Constituion Act 1867 which gives the Provinces control over their natural resources?
  10. Really? So what exactly do this speechwriter/image consultants do day-to-day?
  11. No. It doesn't work that way. Anybody who honestly thinks these guys have the time, or inclination, to prep before any TV experience truly has no idea about the system. Argus, how many staffers, between the Hill office and the Constituency office do you think the average MP has?
  12. Any actual support for that statistic? What do you see as a fair concession to keep Quebec in Canada? Why the big hangup about working in the civil service? If it was truly a desire of mine I would work harder at my French. It isn't, so no big deal. What would you consider a *compromise* on the OLA?
  13. Do you really think that is true in Canada? Where does the money come from for all these spin doctors and media analysts? Regular MPs definitely don't have the money for that. Besides there is enough crazy stuff said by MPs from all parties to prove to the contrary. Sure you see *some* of that stuff at the top levels, but it is not all politicians by any stretch of the imagination.
  14. Keeping Quebec in Canada is far more than just the OLA. Yes, the OLA helps Francophones. But you have to look at why. It helps Francophones because they are more likely to raise functionally bilingual kids. The only thing stopping more Anglophones from being bilingual is the, real or imagined, belief that it isn't worth the time or effort to learn French. Is the OLA really that important to you? Why not put in the effort to learn French then?
  15. Ahhh, so geographic areas are merely *arbitrary*. Your argument would carry more weight if it didn't ignore the Constitution, which defines ownership of natural resources to these *arbitrary* geographic areas known as provinces. Do you feel that all geographic areas are arbitrary?
  16. So you really should have started a thread on why you want Quebec to leave Canada.
  17. My guess is that SES is more accurate. In the days before the election SES consistently had the Conservative support level lower than many of the other major polls.
  18. I'm really not following your line of reasoning below. If you don't speak French, you can't get a bilingual position - period. So you are saying it is better to not get a bilingual position, than to get one and have to work in a majority Francophone office? Maybe Quebec will never have 'strong attachments to Canadian federalism or Canadian nationalism.' Seems like everybody knows that. I think we have to recognize that as a fact of life and try to acommodate Quebec with a new deal. Getting rid of the OLA could cause enough of a storm in Quebec to lead to the province's separation. I don't want Quebec to separate. Seems like you would be willing to accept that over the continuation of the OLA.
  19. I can't really see how working on my French would "work against" me. Of course there is the time, and expense, invovled. But other than that how would improving my French work against me? I'm not arguing that the OLA is a good policy. What I am saying is that it is a fact of life that must be dealt with. I am sure there are many many Federal public servants who have major issues with the OLA. Politics is all about compromise. This is an issue francophone Canadians clearly won't compromise on and any attempts at appealing the OLA would help the separatist forces cause. Is that tradeoff worth it to you? It isn't to me.
  20. We're not held to a journalistic standard here. We are posting on an anonymous message board, with *rules* that are very sporadically and unevenly applied. News publications really should be held to a higher standard. Frank is a rumour sheet. Admittedly they don't verify tips. So be it. Why would you bother to bring this part of it up days later? Seems like some sort of agenda is driving your actions. If you wanted to post the Mike Harris rumours, so be it. And you did. Claim you used it as an *example* all you want. Regardless, you slandered some one who has been out of public life for years, who just happens to be from the right side of the political spectrum. You could have proven your point without actually using his name. Does that somehow make you feel better that Graham's dirty little secret was brought up, again? Is there such a dearth of information on current conservative politicians that you had to reach back into the Mike Harris era?
  21. Sticking around just because she can is pretty sad. Even though Daddy got her started, there is far more to the private sector than Daddy at this point for Belinda. Not really high-ranking as an opposition member. Maybe the new leader likes her and brings her into his innter cirlce. Maybe she decides to get serious about her French and then try and go for the brass ring a little later. But the new leader gets at least two elections. If there is a CPC majority she can't run the party until the 20teens. That's a long time to wait.
  22. The Senate should definitely be changed. Is abolition necessary? There are reforms that could be made which would make it an actual effective forum without needing to re-open the constitution. Because Senate abolition requires a constitutional amendment is the greatest argument against abolishing the Senate...
  23. It really is quite sad that Rae got a free pass on this one. Had it been said in a general election it would have killed the Liberals. Looks like Rae has lost his touch. Anybody think he'll be around for the final ballot of the leadership convention?
  24. That's my mistake. It didn't seem like Adams would say something like that. Official bilingualism is a fact of life. There are many, many people opposed to the policy. But no party can ever form Government with a policy of weakening or dumping the Official Languages Act. Thus it is a law that will not go away. I'm working on my French in the hopes it will prove beneficial to my career in the future. But that is really the only reason I am doing it, so it is tough to stay committed to studying the language. I don't use it ever in my daily life. But studying a language does have some benefits in keeping the mind sharp, so I view that as a reason to study when I'm not feeling like it. That even works sometimes.
  25. That is the reason why SES polls have so much respect. The last SES poll published before the election missed all the major party votes by exactly 0.1%. www.sesresearch.com They also did well in 2004. So pointing to a less accurate pollster to support your assertion that SES is off the mark is pretty weak.
