Most Americans dislike the media, and want to see it trolled, it ain't just Trump's base, the media is far less popular than he is, which is why he attacks them so often. It's not just his base, you may wish that it was, but it has far broader appeal than that. When the media picks there battles with him poorly, just because he trolls them, that makes them look even worse and diminish their credibility even further. Getting ahead by tearing the media down is entirely rational of Trump, it's not an accident.
