Eugenics is a far worse disease, and it's neither transparent or humane. Overpopulation as a problem is nothing compared to the negatives that come with eugenics.

Capitalism has been better for the environment than any other economic system in human history. Stopping population growth is bad for the economy, and hurting the economy is bad for the environment. Better technology leads to increased consumption, therefore, you're a Luddite. Human Flourishing leads to increased consumption, therefore, you're anti-human civilization. This virus came from Chinese wet markets, and the virus likely never would have existed or become widespread without those wet markets existing. You want to believe that if governments just had good intentions, everything would work out, and if it doesn't work out, that means they simply have bad intentions. Intentions usually aren't the issue though, as the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

You may want to live in a world where government can't possibly be that incompetent, but you do not live in such a world. Humans are not as competent as you seem to think they are, and that goes double for their governments.
