NAFTA negotiations.
paxamericana replied to Thinkinoutsidethebox's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Yes Europe should increase their own defense and you too canada. I highly doubt they will ever reach a point where they can ask the us to leave. Our near peer adversary, china and russia are only getting more and more powerful. You need us. Look, no one want NATO to go away that would mean the end of free liberal democracy in europe. But at this current rate of ripping american off with trade and asking us to pay the most in defense is unsustainable. -

Ukraine was caused by european's impotentcy and obama lack of will to fight. His cia director even admitted the russian figures out obama wasn't going to fight back and the european were impotent. -

Why do you think we have to all start on an even playing field? That's exactly the entitlement mentality that is destroying the country. -

Syria was caused by us pulling out of iraq, a direct result of obama's foreign policy...second did you forget about isis, don't lose sight of why we're there. The middle east has been stabilized ever since trump re deployed forces there, stemming the flow of refugees. -

The Great Immigration Debate

NOPE wrong analogy again. Seeing and purchasing power is two separate thing. Opportunity means your ability to get a good education if you have the merit, which last I check universities have been pretty good about even offering full ride scholarships to the financially less fortunate but have the required credential. Opportunity does not guarantee that you will make 2 million dollars after 4 years of college in history. -

You don't get it do you. This ain't about trump its about Canada and the EU ripping off americans whilst asking us to defend you all. Trump was not the first president to bring this issue up and he won't be the last. All the other president kept a low profile with their displeasure but not trump because he has no political capital to do so. So get it in your head, you need us, you need to lower your trade barrier that will benefit everyone. Start paying more for your own defense. We are asking for 2 percent. You are currently at 1.2 and have no plan to get it up to 2 even in 10 years. America is starting to wake up to the injustice we've been suffering for the past 70 years. Trump is raising the alarm and you can't even realize he's doing it for your own good. If you want to bury your head in the sand and hope trump will go away then start learning russian and chinese. PS: you do realize "U.S. Chamber of Commerce" isn't actually a branch of our government right. That's the largest lobbying group in America... http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/top.php?showYear=2015&indexType=s -
Why don't you pay more for nato then? You're in no position to criticize America's foreign policy. We been your piggy bank and defense for 70 years. The american people are waking up to the injustice. Trump wasn't the first president to complain about this and he won't be the last. If not then start learning russian and chinese. Seriously, we're getting real tired of our generosity being taken for granted. Lower your trade barrier, we're not asking for much just free trade to benefit everyone and not just you. Spend more for your own defense. We are asking for 2 percent of your gdp. Stop using it on researching whale crap. "The U.S. accounts for more than 70 percent of all NATO military spending. Only Britain, Estonia, Greece and Poland now meet the NATO goal of spending at least 2 percent of GDP on defense." https://www.defensenews.com/global/the-americas/2017/06/07/canada-to-increase-military-spending-70-percent-in-10-years/ Seriously greece? You spend less than de-facto third world country???
-
You got that right. They think obama was their friend... obama complained about the same exact thing trump is complaining. Obama just wasn't as vocal about it. And they have the nerve to complain about trade. We've been their piggy bank and defense for 70 years. If they don't want to pay for their own defense and take down the trade barrier than they better start learning russian and chinese.

Why don't you just admit defeat and be annexed. That way at least you get to vote about it. Second i think trump is taking America on a new path to correct the harm done by obama. Oh by the way obama you poster boy favorite actually think the eu and by extension canada are a bunch of freeloader. He was just being politically correct about his displeasure for you. Are there critics to trump's foreign policy, sure, but keep your views in perspective, we are all just pundits, outsiders looking in. You think the eyes of the white tower are blind to your criticism, they're not. They see it and have a better assessment of issues we face more than you can possibly know. Trump's policy from day one has always been America first. You "allies" are way too comfortable taking america's goodwill for granted. Trump is waking the rest of america up to your ways. So get on board the trump train and stop resisting. We need free trade across our borders, you all need to spend more for your own defense and stop asking America to share the largest burden with our blood and money everytime Russia and China bullies you. -
Nope its fact. Those opinion saying otherwise are merely wishful thinking. Look, all these geopolitical theory are based on human psychology. If you are weak the you invite conflict because there would be an incentive to take advantage of the opponents weakness. This has been shown to be true time and time again read history. We modern inteligencia aren't that different from our cave man ancestor. Why do you think world super power never went to direct war with one another, because it would mean the end of civilization as we know it. The risk outweight any benefit. Same for the military industrial complex. If everyone can maintaim a strong deterence then there would be no need for war because the cost would out weight any potential benefit.
-
Uh what world do you live in? Reality says that if you are weak your opponent will move against you. If two sides are strong and can deter agression, then there would be no need to war with one another. this has been true since the advent of Nuclear super power. We have enjoy a relative peace since the end of world war 2 not because we all decided to lay down our arms. If anything the cold war proved my theory.

Yup these are all issue not addressed by your liberal government.

I dont think so. The US will thrive as it always have but will canada bask in the sun with it's supply management in a global economy is yet to be determine. But economic theory dictates that those with the least barriers will thrive. Like America. -
Yes it is ironic that in order to fight nationalism you would have to adopt nationalist identity. It is even more amusing that Canada's national identity is not American.

Yup these anti trump fringe group coming out of the wood work are only pushing moderate voter to trump. -
I am in the early stages of forming my theory and would like some constructive input. I believe that with the advent of technology (communication, transportation)and its ability to breach international, geographic physical barriers, how soon will we see the death of a national identity. Is it already here and the rise in nationalism is the few final death throws against the dying of the light?

Yup no doubt. These tariff open up huge opportunities in developing countries especially in Africa. Mexico Canada and the EU have enjoyed their protectionist policy against america for way too long. Soon enough other doors will open and they'll have to capitulate or face larger financial crisis. -

Looks like the war is on boys and girls. Better start hoarding Canadians before all the stuff you want are over priced. "Canada hits $13 billion of US goods with new tariffs" http://money.cnn.com/2018/07/01/news/canada-us-tariffs-steel-aluminum/index.html -
