  1. But you are right, there are comparative advantage to be had in other areas besides closer production and wages. But these issue are quickly being overcome by technology and better regulatory practices. Take Organic food production as an example, consumer are willing to pay more for higher quality produce grown locally, there's an increasing demand in the world for this. Technology is also bringing cost down as well with advances in hydroponics. Keep in mind that international trade(import export) is only roughly 25 percent of our gdp. 5 trillion vs 20 trillion. There is compelling numerical evidence that we are already a economic nationalist country. https://www.thebalance.com/u-s-imports-and-exports-components-and-statistics-3306270
  2. Yeah but we're not really offended by Anti-American sentiment, we're more amused, if anything BC didn't spend 10 years complaining about anti-american sentiment, he spent 10 years trolling you guys about it. I'm just a late adopter. xP
  3. Not sure I can agree, I've contacted my university professor about this issue as well and he doesn't have a clear answer. The problem is that America's economy is heavily service based and are non-trade-able so doesn't benefit much from globalization, we also don't export much. As you also mentioned with the advent of automation what is the point of a globalized manufacturing supply chain? Manufactured products could be easily be automated back in the US. we have the technology and expertise to do it. Something the Chinese have been trying to steal. Our AI tech. So for us to adopt economic nationalism it wouldn't do much harm to us. There's a reason we are selling weapons to the world and asking people to arm up. Economic nationalism can lead to war if there is a huge power disparity. The US will then become to sole guarantor of peace, underwriting security arrangement thus keeping its position as the permanent hegemonic power. Also keep in mind that international trade(import export) is only roughly 25 percent of our gdp. 5 trillion vs 20 trillion. 4. As I said that principle only work if they play by the rules and actually adopt free trade. The international trading system is not free trade. Joint Venture is not free trade. What trump has done is threaten globalism with economic nationalism if they don't conform to the free trading system. He's playing devil's advocate.
  5. yup and to top it off, the best thing those countries with low wages can do is cheat the trading system by erecting tariff and non tariff barriers along with subsidies. Their comparative advantage is coming at the cost of worker's rights and environmental degradation. Trump is cleaning up the mess of this trading system. The virtuous loop can only work in principle if everyone follows the rule. There's not much of an incentive to follow said rule without enforcement, something previous administration lacked a backbone to do.
  6. Initially I just came to say a friendly hello but BC exposed me to your anti-american fetish. It was too good of an opportunity to pass so I join the darkside calling canadians out for their behavior. But mainly I really want to be a pro-conservative voice to counter democrat liberal globalization agenda that never benefitted the average american "deplorables".
  7. Tell that to the deplorables in the midwest the globalist left behind. Trump has done more for the minorities in this country than any democrat globalist ever would. “It’s not just a theoretical discussion about economic nationalists versus globalists. It’s about what works, and a lot of these globalist policies never delivered as advertised.” https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/08/trump-tariffs-winners-losers-448476
  8. Nope Trumpian economics is anti globalist elite.
  9. I think in part because of globalization and players adopting non tariff barriers against the us. The eu and canada were small enough to not matter but when China entered the wto with their non tariff barrier and excessive cheating it alarmed a lot of people. It also help prove that the benefit to globalization were never achieved because of said tendencies to cheat. The post ww2 liberal rules based order no longer became sustainable. So you can thank China for ruining your suckling status quo.
  10. It looks like Mexico is ready for free trade, Eu is ready for free trade, China is buckling under enormous pressure but is being held back by Xi, Hilariously, Trudeua is adopting the globalist chinese model of holding out on free trade and erecting trade barriers to the detriment of canadians. Canada, hurry up and adopt free trade or you're going to be left behind.
  11. Larry Kudlow says the EU will be coming over to the US next week with a free trade offer for Trump to consider. No thanks to you canada... So hurry up and conform to our demand or you'll be left in the dust . "KUDLOW: Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the E.U., is coming to Washington next week. We will be in discussions, I am told. He’s bringing a very important free trade offer, okay? I am told. I can’t confirm that. This is what I’m hearing. Our ambassador, and others…" KUDLOW: Yes, it could. Look, I was in the bilaterals – just to step back for a minute – with Justin Trudeau and President Trump and with President Macron and President Trump … so President Trump said to both Trudeau and Macron, and later to Merkel, “Let’s abolish tariffs, non-tariff barriers, and subsidies. Let’s work together together to do that, okay?” We made progress. There were no deals, okay? That communique broke down not because of those bilaterals – the bilaterals were great – but because of a press conference that Trudeau never should have given. Now, I am told through our sources – including our ambassadors – that Merkel has been working on that, shaking up the E.U. …
  12. Researchers are signing up to pledge against the use of AI technology in weapon system. I'm not debating the ethics of using AI only simply stating that this is a pipe dream for well wisher. Anything that is useful in the civilian world can be weaponized. https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/18/technology/ai-autonomous-weapons/index.html
  13. We have too many jobs and not enough workers. Come on Canucks it's time you headed south. "The ultra-tight labor market has given more bargaining power to workers and many companies have boosted pay and benefits to attract or retain employees. In one case, a St. Louis trucking firm offered workers “the largest onetime pay increase in its history.” " https://www.marketwatch.com/story/worker-shortages-rising-costs-hemming-in-a-us-economy-bursting-at-the-seams-feds-beige-book-finds-2018-07-18
  14. Looks like uncle sam is winning and winning hard. China doesn't have the power to bear its fang against US dominance. Let that be a lesson to you anti-Americans. Take our trade deal and avoid massive national humiliation. It's almost gunboat diplomacy all over again, forcing the Chinese to open up their financial market. Liu Yuhui, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and chief economist with TF Securities, a mainland brokerage, said at a forum in Beijing on Wednesday that the trade war had disrupted Beijing’s original plan of a smooth de-risking campaign but China would rather take the pain to cut debt instead of inflating the problem through fiscal expansion or monetary easing. “There’s no other choice – China has to tighten its belt for the next three to five years,” Liu said. “The Chinese leaders have acknowledged it does no good to go back to isolation to confront [the US],” said Larry Hu, chief China economist of Macquarie Capital in Hong Kong. “They still have their eyes on opening up.” https://www.scmp.com/news/china/economy/article/2155886/can-china-survive-trade-war-seducing-us-firms-and-fixing-economys "On the external front, Beijing has accelerated market liberalisation. By opening up the domestic financial system, cutting tariffs and reducing hurdles for foreign direct investment (FDI), China is embracing more, not less, interaction with the outside world, unlike the protectionist US." https://www.scmp.com/business/article/2155691/retaliate-reform-liberalise-three-ways-china-will-respond-new-us-tariffs
  15. Yeah our MIC had some surplus ammunition so we thought caring is sharing.
  16. It's not a zero sum approach, it's more like a backlash to globalization. Look we still need free trade with Canada and the rest of the world for commodities like agriculture and energy . But for America with it's super duper great service based economy it no longer needs to be tied down to the shackle of globalization. This isn't trump's policies, it's peter navarro, steve bannon etc... Stop getting bogged down with the puppet, look at the puppet master.
  17. Look we've already established that Trump is the siberian candidate. You're preaching to the choir. Only a genius like putin can be clever enough to place sanction on himself and his buddies while angering the rest of america with election meddling.
  18. *whispers* because he's a globalist banking elite that subscribe to the false promise of identity politics?
  19. That article had one fundamental flawed, it stills believe in a globalized manufacturing supply chain. My argument is that since America's economy is not a manufacturing or export based then why would globalization matter. Our main industry is service based, non-tradable which don't benefit any from globalization other than a cheaper supply of manufactured goods that could be easily automated in America. and Since we both agree that globalization is bad and no longer needed then would it not be logical to concede that economic nationalism should be adopted quickly?
  20. It is interesting to see that globalization has created a backlash movement of populism. The wave of populism is dictated by economic nationalism not Isolationism. Here is a good explanation of what's to come.
  21. Service sector jobs are by definition non-trade-able industries. How would it affect us if you can't trade healthcare services, or blue collar jobs in the first place? Silicone Valley jobs are the same, they're service based. It could be argued that intellectual property is a non-trade-able commodity because the transaction only happens once. Economic nationalism benefit these type of industry that are non-trade-able. This is why the trade war tariff doesn't really hurt the US economy, in fact its the opposite because now it allows for further job growth in the de-globalized supply chain. Globalization benefit those who are the most productive (or manipulating predatory-economics), but everyone can't become Elon musk or Einstein, they need their productivity protected from globalized competition to thrive. Since the rest of us big brains are already involved with service based high-tech industries then why do we need globalization too? Seems like a win win for America. Manufacturing jobs are automated Argus, and if they aren't already they will be, there is no longer a need for a globalized manufacturing supply chain. Other then the extraction of minerals which you can do at home if you have good natural resources like we have here in north america. The rest of goods that can be traded will be done through free trade. This is what Trump's economist are offering. Protectionist trade in key industry of manufactured hi-tech industry for the less productive members of society and free trade for all other non essential industry such as agriculture.
  22. Yes some manufactured good prices will go up but so will wages and jobs. Remember that America is not a heavy manufacturing economy, we are a service based industry which is where everyone is heading. So if anything Economic nationalism serves us just fine because it rewards non trade-able sector such as service at the expense of trad-able sector such as manufacturing. In the future, everything manufactured will be automated so those jobs aren't coming back with large amounts of human labor its coming back in the form of services, particularly STEM innovation. The crown jewel of America. Remember America economic backbone is innovation. Also Argus, Canada is already receiving massive benefits to the economic nationalism, there's a reason why silicone valley is investing heavily in Canada we are pushing all the foreign worker there. This is where we are dumping all the foreign worker ;P.
  23. Yes but what flavor of nationalism is the question Michael was asking. Economic Nationalist best describe the Trump agenda. I'm pro American anything, american rocks, air, toilet paper, what ever.
  24. Trump's is POTUS, potus has access to vast swathe of brain power. I'm not saying Trump has said brain capacity but the people working for him definitely do. I've only recently figured out Trump's playbook and are still finalizing my understanding of the details. I suggest looking up, peter navaro, larry kudlow, Steve Bannon, Jim mattis. These people are some of the most influential people on Trump. They will guide you through the haze of trump. I believe Trump is a economic nationalist and populist. Those people all align on the issue of China.
  25. nah, I'm pretty sure it's his buddy busting his balls about it.
