  1. I agree that the term Islamophobia is not the most descriptive, but it is part of the lexicon and generally well understood. Yes, there are many out there that intentionally try to misunderstand it, thinking their warped logic will somehow deflect the attention from where it should be.
  2. Calling a black man a n***er is exercising one's freedom of expression, and yes there is something wrong with it. Drawing a cartoon that is offensive is also exercising one's freedom of expression, and yes there is something wrong with it as well. Neither of them however are crimes, but violence is a crime. Where exactly did I say religion should be afforded protection by the law from criticism? Stop making up things and saying I said them.
  3. Stalin and Mao had "enemies of the people", and labor camps (or worse) to deal with them. Now we have: "The FAKE NEWS media (failing New York Times, NBC News, ABC, CBS, CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!"
  4. That is a fairly simplistic generalization of the US/France relationship. There is a very long history between those two countries that include both mutual respect and support along with confrontation. Yes, they both also exhibit imperialistic attitudes towards Africa but so do other countries like China. France has a long and controversial history with Africa, while Americas is more recent and also controversial it is of a different nature. Also note that Africa is not a homogeneous entity.
  5. You are right, there is no consistency in language. That however does not make one right and the other wrong. As betsy suggested, make a new topic and we can discuss what is the best term to use and how to best define it. The most important factor not to forget is how to introduce it into the lexicon and get it broadly accepted. For now however Islamophobia is the generally understood word to mean the expression of hatred toward Muslims.
  6. Cube root of American population is just under 700.
  7. While I do think that to a large part the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms does reflect our values, that does not mean it is perfect and I agree 100% with it. As you point out the "supremacy of God" is certainly one controversial part of the Charter for many Canadians. Unlike the second amendment folks in the US, with their own very corrupted logic, I believe that the Canadian Constitution must be a living document and evolve as we as a society evolve. If Canada is to continue as a nation over the long term, then the "supremacy of God" will disappear from our Charter. It will take both true leadership combined with the right timing in societal evolution to tackle that. We recognize that the Charter is part of the Constitution Act, and we as a nation understand that that the Constitution is amendable as it clearly provides for. It will of course take real leadership to tackle changes. So no, I do not condemn Chong & Alghabra for referencing the Charter as an expression of Canadian values. While not perfect, it does a descent job of reflecting our values and I have yet to see anything better. Yes, you and I might draw up something that we agree with but until we get broad agreement and support for something then it is of little value. Let's remember that Stephane Charbonnier is a victim, not a hero. Two wrongs do not make a right. It is possible to disagree with the cartoon Charbonnier drew and at the same time condemning those who took his life. Just because you have the right to express an opinion, does not mean you should express that opinion and that everyone must agree with it. I should have the right to walk up to a black man and call him a n***er, does that mean it is acceptable that I do that? If that man gets angry and lashes out at me violently, then he should be arrested and charged with a crime but does that automatically make me a hero?
  8. That's nothing to laugh at when they are on the inside of your skull bone
  9. It would seem that John McCain is not going take this Trump any more.
  10. The Nunavut Legislative Assembly is fairly small with only 22 representatives, but that gives it a ratio of 1 representative to every 1634 residents. An interesting tidbit for all those continually whining about bilingualism in this country; along with New Brunswick and the federal government, Nunavut is the only other legislative body to have a bilingual Hansard (official record of proceedings). For the federal government and New Brunswick the official languages are French & English, but for Nunavut they are English and Inuktitut.
  11. Yes, the Inuit used to be largely nomadic but in the past century or so they began to settle in communities such as this one. The trading post was established there to trade with the local population.
  12. You had better talk to the ones who are making that silly talk, like Ezra Levant.
  13. Where did I say I don't defend freedom of expression? They can say whatever they want, and I will denounce them for saying it if I disagree with it.
  14. Then participate in the standing committee, listen in on parlvu or read the minutes and submit your comments. You are going down the same wrong trail as Argus, thinking that the only thing government does is create laws.
  15. I have to agree with something someone says to protect their freedom of expression? That is ludicrous.
  16. Isn't it better that Canada has a single criminal code, unlike the US which changes from state to state? I suggest you visit Massachusetts, Michigan, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, or Wyoming.
  17. The motion is to study a problem, how does that go on to become law? You are making wild accessions based on the rantings of Ezra Levant and his cabal.
  18. What do you mean protected? Should I cheer when someone calls you a name because I am protecting your freedom of expression?
  19. Stop it with the bullshyte. There is no law, nor a proposed law, about Islamophobia charges. Stop listening to Ezra Levant.
  20. You confuse acceptable with non-criminal. If you want to call her some demeaning name then I don't expect you to be thrown in jail, but it is not acceptable. You should be denounced. If you threaten her life however, then you should be locked up.
  21. Sorry but death threat are not perfectly acceptable, regardless to who they are directed. Nobody is making the claim that they are acceptable.
  22. Yes, it is interesting comparing the size of various legislative assemblies with population. In your case you have an average of 27,500 citizens/representative. China has a huge legislative body, the National People's Congress has 2,987 members, but then that is 1 representative to 455,000 people. India on the other hand has 454 members in the House of the People, or 1 for every 2.9 million people. Those are on opposite sides of your cube root theory. I don't know any country that actually implements such a rule, from what I understand it was an observation made by Arend Lijphtardt based on a few select democracies.
  23. Are you suggesting a health care system that prioritizes based on tax contribution instead of need like our current one?
  24. I bought a battery for $12 and a small charger card/port for $8 when my phone quit, and it is now almost 2 years later and the phone is still working fine.
  25. Very cool, I should have tried that with my bank when I was carrying a mortgage (which I was in 2008 - paid off in 2011). Sorry Mr. Banker, I will not pay my instalment and further more you loaned me the money in the first place to increase your real-estate portfolio and you are responsible for the crash so therefore you must pay me back ten times the original amount you loaned me.
