  1. You can participate in Church Online. Just like we're watching sport on TV. Capitalism FTW!
  2. Protests are organic things that apparently are protected by your first amendment. Churches are large indoor gatherings. Sports are being played in front of no fans. So the crowd thing isn't as much of an issue.
  3. Like Trump should focus on COVID-19 and not fake inviting himself to throw an opening pitch or brag that he's all "cognatively there".
  4. I saw this on my Facebook feed. https://www.forbes.com/sites/isabeltogoh/2020/07/28/facebook-takes-down-viral-video-making-false-claim-that-hydroxychloroquine-cures-covid/#368d4e45531d You can tell someone is deep in the conspiracy theory rabbit hole when the start talking about 5G and HDQ.
  5. Yet you're not citing sources from our current level of "crisis". Can you not access healthcare in this climate? I certainly can. Well hospitalization is very low right now, it was a success. But we aren't re-opening without good medical advise. Something the US failed to do. We can see from the US and Latin America that the virus is most certainly isn't "burning" itself out. And some of the hottest places in the world are experiencing serious COVID-19 outbreaks. In those places that didn't re-open responsibly, the virus has increased. It's less about heat, and more about time spent indoors with other people. When you live in Qatar, Brazil, Florida or Arizona. It's so hot outside, it might as well be -20 outside in January. Which is why the fall is when virus's come back. Because everyone is inside all the time. In schools particularly.
  6. This speaks to Trump's narcissism and complete alternate reality. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/509291-yankees-surprised-by-trump-announcing-plans-to-throw-first-pitch So he invites himself to throw out a first pitch then cancels because. . . he's too busy. 1) He's not too busy, he golf all the time and spends all his day Tweeting. 2) The Yankees didn't invite him. He invited himself only to cancel immediately. The President of the Yankees says he can do it whenever he wants but he cancelled before they could even make an alternative date. 3) He's actually jealous that the US likes Fauci more than they like him. 4) I don't recall Trump every actually doing a First pitch as POSTUS. I'm sure his pride couldn't handle him throwing the ball in the dirt like Fauci did. He's already done it in 2004.
  7. The Article you quoted is from April. Do you have statistics and not anecdotal reporting? I have statistics from places where COVID-19 did get a foothold and death rates were very high, so were hospitalizations. These lockdowns were meant to prevent that.
  8. Belgium wasn't highlighted in your report. Their spike isn't huge. Certainly not a spike in deaths. A spike in cases is natural when things start re-opening. But unlike in the US, they aren't being accompanied by hospitalization spikes and appreciable increases in deaths. Or at least not an appreciable drop in deaths. Testing is often a required because you're really sick. And in places like Florida, 1 in 4 people appear to be sick. If Positivity rate isn't a good indicator, and new cases isn't a good indicator, then what is the "be-all and end-all? Just plain deaths? Even if that was the only thing that matter. The US is still the only developed nation that still has high daily deaths this far into the pandemic where treatment is much better.
  9. They don't. They're playing in front of empty stadiums and arenas. The owners are just trying to salvage some of the money they've lost. You're projecting your dislike for sports on this pandemic. Having baseball back is actually quite reassuring. It's something we lost when this pandemic started and even if it's only an imperfect facsimile, it's a good distraction.
  10. It's hilarious that the State of Pennsylvania wouldn't allow the Jays to play in Pittsburgh yet across the state the Miami Marlins visit Philly and potentially infect multiple players on that team. AND the infected Marlins are now Quarantining in Philly. Maryland also was cool about letting the Blue Jays play in Baltimore. Now the Orioles can't play their next game because they were scheduled to visit said Marlins. But the Jays were the problem.
  11. Spain's National daily count is around 2,500 with a negligible increase in deaths. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/spain/ Germany's Spike still amounts a few hundred daily. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/germany/ France has spiked to around 1,000 cases daily with no appreciable increase in deaths. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/france/ Similar to the recent "surge" in Canada that still amounts to no more than 500 cases a day, these are only spikes compared to early July numbers as these countries slowly emerge from strict lockdowns. Conversely the US is plateauing and around 60,000 new cases a day and a few hundred deaths, at the low end, or 1,000+ on the high-end.
  12. That's a dense analysis of the numbers. A vast majority of Europe's case load and deaths happened in March and April that necessitated a shutdown. Currently European deaths have slowed to a trickle if not stopped. The US still regularly records 1,000+ deaths a day. Did the entire discussion we had last week about positivity rate just go through your brain with zero retention? Increased testing would lower the positivity rate. Ontario hasn't had a day with positivity over 1% since like June, if that. That's why 150 Medical experts are calling for another shut down. https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2020/07/24/medical-experts-tell-government-shut-it-down-now-and-start-over/#409c5cd9695c Nothing to see here.
  13. They're regularly tested. Seems the problem with baseball is that players are getting positive results after they've already played a game.
  14. Like with the NBA, they're in a bubble. That seems to be the only workable sports model.
  15. Similar to the US. Young people not giving a crap. But just on a much lower scale.
  16. And you have no concrete evidence that any significant life was lost due to a surgery being delayed. Sure some people may have experience serious discomfort, but AFIK emergency procedures didn't stop.
  17. Note. Member OftenWrong's article is from April. I would be shocked if any serious surgeries are still being postponed. I've been able to access healthcare as I always have. There is still no actual figures on collateral deaths from COVID-19 Shutdowns.
  18. Yeah, a few hundred cases a day vs a few thousands in Florida. Many in your country do as well.
  19. Of course this is faulty logic because it doesn't consider what the COVID-19 casualties would be had no mitigation taken place.
  20. 8 Marlins players tested positive. Two games have now been postponed because of it to see how many Phillies were infected by playing the Marlins over the weekend. Both teams were scheduled to come to Canada this season. See why the decision was made? https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29547211/two-mlb-games-postponed-marlins-outbreak
  21. 2 MLB games already postponed because several players have tested positive.

Well that one weekend of games was good while it lasted.

      Two things.

1)Unlike in the US, it only takes about a day to get your results back. Many people wait over a week for test results in the US.

      2) Sports aren't a public threat. But it shows how endemic COVID-19 is in the US that players can't not get infected by this virus. The MLB season might be done before it got through its first week.

    3. Shady

That's all great, but that has absolutely no bearing on an MLB team being in Toronto for 3 days, quarantined to a hotel.  Besides, sports leagues get their test results quicker.  There's no public health threat to an MLB team playing in Toronto for a few days.  Certainly not more of a risk than allowing restaurants and bars to allow indoor dining now across most of the province.  You people aren't making any sense, as usual.

I agree with the sentiment that the Bubble scenario the Blue Jays proposed for Rogers Centre was likely very safe.

But considering that, at least one team has been completely decimated by COVID-19 within four days of the start of the season, it seemed like baseball's restart is unworkable.

The support staff at the Rogers Centre and Hotel aren't being bubbled are they?

These positive results seem to happen after actual games are being played. Which is why the Phillies game has also been postponed.

  22. In a time when the US Economy is very fragile, Republicans are bickering over extending financial benefits. The plan sets to expire on Friday. The paradox of US society is that the $600 top-up is more generous that many people's full-time job before the pandemic. So many will have to be cut-off before deciding going back to work in a pandemic will be worth it for them.
  23. The rush to re-open has clearly gotten the US situation to where it currently is. In all other developed nations, economies have re-opened with not nearly the pressure of such high caseloads of COVID. The rush to re-open amid the pandemic has actually stalled re-opening in some of the largest states in the US.
  24. Why is everything that's not lockstep with Trump Leftwing? You characterized conventional polling as "Progressive". The only polling that seems to think Trump is doing well is the suspect Rassumsen polling and Polls that Trump won't let anyone see.
  25. What drama? Who's been inconvenienced other than the Jays? And perhaps the broadcasters at Rogers.
