How do we force immigrants to assimilate?

If they develop a poop-emoji helmet I'm gonna buy a motorcycle. I'll ride around wearing a jacket that says "vote for Trudeau". -
How do we force immigrants to assimilate?

No more than most other places. The caste system that you're talking about involves people of the same religion and the same race. Can that really be considered bigoted? I'd call it religious stupidity. People can be as dumb as they want within their own circle. It's only when they inflict their views on another race or religion that it becomes everyone's problem. Sikhs fought for the allies, and very well, wearing turbans. If it's that important to them then they can ride motorbikes with them on as far as I'm concerned. As far as ICBC rates because of helmets, it's not like having no helmet means that you'll probably get a long-term injury and tons of money. It usually means that you're dead and you get nothing. -
Best performing province has an NDP government
WestCanMan replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I live in BC, and what I find scary about those numbers is that it's mostly based on our own circular economy. The top 5 things on that list have nothing to do with bringing money into the province, unless the purchase of real estate by foreigners counts. And regardless of the sale of real estate, money coming in from China is a big part of our economy. If the economy here slows down it's easy to see real estate, the service industry, retail and construction all taking a big hit at the same time. Gas has hit $2/litre here in some places. The cost of living is going up all across the board. I'd personally love it if our economy stays strong but it's not fundamentally solid. -
America under President Trump

Really? You challenged my earlier post which stated: Here's what the author from The Economist said in the article about manufacturing jobs in the US, which directly addresses the topic of manufacturing jobs leaving the USA. (FYI the US has 300 million people and thousands of companies in the manufacturing sector. What one or two individual companies do is insignificant - ie a meaningless sample size. Trump is in charge of the economy, not just a few companies). Your query has been sufficiently answered RC. From a left-leaning magazine no less. You went on to say: See the chart about the number of people working towards a pension in the coal industry? The sharp decline from 2012 to 2016? See the flatline after 2016? Obama was actively working to shut down those jobs. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/04/04/president-trump-has-yet-save-struggling-coal-industry-numbers-show/479587002/ Even in the USA today, where they try to spin the story against Trump, you'll see the one line that says that jobs are slightly up under Trump. That's the most important line in the whole article yet they still try to spin the whole thing in another direction. 1) grow up 2) There have always been farmers in one area of one state, or a certain type of crop, etc, that has a really tough go. For literally every year that I can remember, farmers have had "too much rain, not enough rain, their competition is getting too many subsidies, spring came too late, fall came too early, too many grasshoppers, etc, etc". Our own Canola farmers are over a barrel right now. Dairy farmers everywhere outside of Quebec are second-class citizens. That's farming. No money, no love, no respect. and all they do is make food so that we don't all die. Are they all suckers? Doesn't seem right. Anyhow, you're using a tiny sample size from one part of a single sector of the economy to try and paint a picture for the whole economy in general. That's like me saying that Dentists in Simcoe Ontario are unhappy about their wages and that means that the entire Canadian economy is a bust. If you don't know that you're being disingenuous then you're seriously not smart. -

How do we force immigrants to assimilate?
WestCanMan replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Are you just talking about regular immigrants, or does that stat include refugees? Also, when people aren't actively seeking work they don't show up in unemployment statistics. I don't put any stock in your stat equating to "93.6% of adult refugees are no longer receiving free food, clothing, medical, money and/or shelter after ten years here". I don't think that anyone is saying that "regular immigrants" (for lack of the proper terminology) are lazy, or that they don't assimilate. The thread title refers to "immigration" I think that it's more specifically geared towards refugees because they can get into the country without money, employment options or language skills. People who come here based on regular immigration don't just arrive without skills or a clearly-stated goal of how they plan to contribute to society. Almost all of them that come here have a plan to fully integrate into society. -
The Barrack H Obama Legacy
WestCanMan replied to Carlus Magnus's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Agreed. I mentioned that in another post here recently. I would also hazard a guess though, that having a fresh face in the oval office was beneficial at the time. The downward-trending economy had momentum, just like the racial division, cop-killing and rioting of 2016 weren't showing any signs of letting up either. If Obama could have served a third time there would be no combustibles left in Baltimore and several other cities. Even after Trump came in the festival-like attitude of social justice marches was still going strong. The woman's march was big, iirc there was an anti-Trump march in NY where he lived, there was a riot at Berkeley and fires were lit, etc. -

The Barrack H Obama Legacy

On the bright side he'll be remembered for stopping the downward spiral of the economy in '08. Dems and Republicans alike will remember him droning on with his endless speeches, and for pregnant pauses that put William Shatner to shame. On the downside he will be remembered for inciting and stoking racial division. "I went down to my..... kitchen and I...... got a BAGEL. Out of the... refrigerator. [Pause for DRAMATIC effect]. I applied a generous. Layer. Of butter. Then I went for the, oh yeah you guessed it........ creamcheese. [pause for SUPER dramatic effect] I layered that on like a, kidinacandystore, and, then I stared at the, wonder, that was, before my eyes. And it brought me back to a, more peaceful, happier time in my life, when. I first came to America. [reflective pause] from Indonesia. [DramaPuase 3 - you can never have too many pauses for dramatic effect, it just gets better every time] It signified an end to the days of, hearing the call to prayer, and a. New beginning......... Then I, ate the. Bagel. It was. Satisfying, but not, overly tasty. Hey wake up evereybody! I'm about to talk about my glass of milk!" I'd be sitting there thinking: "Just eat the god-damned bagel already Barack. Are you sending in another drone strike or what? It's been two days already." -

The Economist used to be worth reading, it's crap now. If our government spent less time virtue signalling and a few minutes actually working for Canadians we likely wouldn't be in this mess. -

That sounds like something from "The Anarchist's Manifesto" if there is such a thing. -

I'm not an American, and we make enough money here in Canada. The Canadian economy is in a precarious position right now though. It's at the top of a hill looking down sharply. Another Trudeau government would do irreparable damage. -
How do we force immigrants to assimilate?
WestCanMan replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Assimilating isn't what you think it is. Being Canadian is respecting other people's rights & freedoms, learning the language, learning what constitutes good manners, and contributing to society. It doesn't stop you from being religious or anything else. The opposite of that is for immigrants to hunker down in their own little ghettoes, live off welfare or whatever business they can conduct within their own tribe, etc. -
How do we force immigrants to assimilate?
WestCanMan replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The people who are entrepreneurs have obviously assimilated. No one said that "no immigrants assimilate". It's just a matter of having a system where it's a priority for people to do it. -

More Bubber lies. That's a shocker. In a free market economy extremely low unemployment = shortage of workers = higher wages to keep the ones you got and to attract new ones. The tax cuts for the middle class also help. -

The stock market is responding to Trump standing up to China. Even Chuck "I hate Trump" Schumer supports it. The cost of not doing anything is much higher in the long run. Listen to Chuck Schumer if you don't believe me. No economy will be all aces for every single person in the country. You're looking at a small percent of farmers and acting as if they're the perfect example of what's happening in every sector, all across the US. Companies weren't threatening, they were leaving under Obama. He said there was no way to stop it. Trump did a good job of reducing it. -

That's a lie, and I don't even need to cite any proof of that because it's common knowledge. Two statements, two lies, and for the second time in a row I don't even need to cite any proof of that because it's common knowledge. You don't seem to have a relationship with the truth. You just told two lies and now you're throwing down some sandbox insults in your attempt to malign the character of another man. I'd call that extremely ironic (if I was being kind), but it's more accurately known as the liberal trifecta. You nailed it Bubber. -

It's ridiculous that people keep getting more and more money the more kids they have. Basically, they more of a burden they are to society the more they are rewarded. -

They were never forced in the past. They just didn't receive food and shelter on a silver platter, nor were they asked what we could do to make our country more to their liking, so they had to work for everything and learn a language. -
Lol. The tight quarters aren't the worst part. Seasickness is the worst part. I threw up a lot in the first year and I never gt over the queasiness and nausea. I never though an infantryman would call a base paradise lol. You might be crazy. Side note, Petaweewee is the worst name for a military base ever. WTF were they thinking?

Qu'Appelle was in 4 squadron, which was more of a training squadron for officers than an actual squadron of war-ready vessels. They were frigates mounted with 3"50 and/or 3"70 guns that were designed to shoot down planes of the late 40's and early 50's, plus torpedoes which were actually useful. Hence it ran a 1 in 3 watch system which was a lower state of readiness (only 1/3 of the ship's company is awake 24 hrs a day) than a 1 in 2 watch system (always 50% ready) that the more modern, useful ships were on. Normally on a 1 in 3 watch system you had a Saturday routine where the workday was 4 hrs, and if you were on watch in the afternoon then you got the morning off. But on our boat Saturday was a full work day. We go the Saturday routine on the Sunday, but if we worked the afternoon shift we didn't get the morning off. Our boat literally sucked (I know most Navy people never say boat, we called the Qu'Appelle "boat all the time), morale was low, the attrition rate was high, and as a result the Captain (Commanding Officer), Executive Officer ad the Chief (Base Chief Warrant Officer to you guys) were all removed of their command. It was the only base/ship in the whole history of all 3 branches of the service where that ever happened. Of all the people that I was close friends with on that ship that were LS (Cpl) and below, only 1 guy stayed in after his 3 years were up. For sure, 20 of us got out. On MCWU we got 1-2 hrs a day of sleep, but we only did that for two weeks out of the entire time I was on that boat. Aside from that, most of the rest of the time was like I described above. 14-20 hrs/day. We were away from our home port about 190 days a year, but some of that time was spent in foreign ports. Usually about 2-3 out of every 12 days. So we did about 150 days a year at sea, and they were 14-20 hrs long. It might be better than the inf, but it still really sucked.

We have a lot of paperwork here that’s of little use to anyone, it’s still all private and confidential. Just because the state has a copy, that doesn’t mean that they have the right to show everyone. That’s opening up a whole new can of worms with respect to privacy laws. “I can’t file because my broke-ass relatives will start hounding me for money” or “the competition will be able to find out too much about my business.” Etc. With respect to CNN etc, not many people in a country of 300 million are stupid enough to believe those networks are honestly giving an effort to tell the pertinent truths accurately. You know exactly what I’m talking about but you still pretend to believe it all. All their actual effort goes into covering things up (Bill’s rapes, every other Democrat’s sex scandal aside from Al Franken, Dem ties to Farrakhan, evidence of FISA abuse, FBI malfeasance in the Trump investigation) and creating false narratives (BK - one completely vague and uncorroborated accusation full of obvious flaws should be enough to derail a man’s career, Pulse shooting was a Republican hate crime, terrorist attacks using vans are proof that guns need to be banned, Trump’s anti-Semitism is to blame for the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting, border walls are racist, border walls don’t work, redactions in the Mueller report are a “constitutional crisis”, impeachment is imminent, there is evidence of actual collusion, etc). If the truth actually comes out of the mouth of a CNN reporter it’s usually a mistake, like when Van Jones said “Russian collusion is a big nothing-burger.” They got it right one single time and they’re not happy about it.
