  1. What have we been through? Did I miss something?
  2. Funny though. "Beiger and beiger".
  3. Being "more religious" does not necessarily equal being less tolerant (though it certainly can).
  4. The noisiest do not necessarily speak for the majority. The desire for reform is more widespread than you think, though I have no doubt it will be an uphill battle.
  5. I am not that optimistic. I expect Climate Change to decimate us before Islam can reform, and we'll all revert to the same tribal, superstitious and barbaric behavior that has pervaded our history.
  6. Oh ye of little faith! How many women, blacks and gays have been threatened, harassed, beaten and even killed on their way to reforming the society in which they lived? Yet we now live in a very different society than we did 50 or 100 years ago.
  7. Indeed and that is part of the process of reform. Taking the attitude that its not working or doesn't count because there is resistance is short-sighted. No progressive movement has ever been welcomed with open arms by the conservatives or those who believe in the status quo.
  8. Earlier in the show, Tyrion (I think) mentioned she still had enough ships to take soldiers somewhere. Did Jon bend the knee? The camera angle as they walked out of the cave suggested something other than knee bending ocurred. Will Cersei think Jaime is worth giving up her revenge against Ellaria? Tyrion didn't seem too comfortable with the decimating of the Lannister Army and Jaime's potential death.
  9. Revolutionizing Islam.
  10. Interesting that even though Trump and Trudeau govern differently, both countries are experiencing economic gains. How is that possible?
  11. More accurately, it's the notion that Muslims are to be feared and hated because they are "too different" from us. Disliking cultural norms that discriminate against women, gays, minorities, etc., isn't Islamaphobia - unless the cultural norms in other cultures are ignored, while used to condemn Muslims.
  12. Bullshit. Your ability to read minds is astounding. One wonders why you aren't out solving the world's problems since you have such talent in ascertaining the true motivations and thoughts of absolutely everyone. Or at least making a killing among the gullible who believe that sort of claptrap.
  13. Just saw this post. I have to say that I cannot imagine the pain and trauma of having this in your history. i want to also say I am impressed by your ability to take a more moderate view of Muslims overall, considering that there is still a sizable contingent who continue to hate and target Jews and given how horribly Jews have already suffered from hatred in recent memory. Thank you for demonstrating what I consider true humanity, and which I believe the majority of humans are both capable of and willing to do. Too bad your views on JT are so wrong, though.
  14. The story you posted does not mention that this guy lied about not having been told it was illegal in Canada to beat one's wife. When the story first came out, that little tidbit was mostly ignored but it could be found in a couple of more credible media sources. This time, when I went looking for that factoid, it was four pages in, after all the right-wing, anti-immigrant articles about refugees who 'don't know any better'. This guy did know better, but to admit that in these articles undermines their argument against immigration and against Muslims. There are 100s of thousands of Muslim men in Canada who do not beat their wives, who do not kill their daughters, who do not engage in any of the practices the right-wing media tries so hard to portray as common-place. There are 100s of thousands of Muslim women who do not wear niqab or burka or even a headscarf, but the entire focus of right-wing media is those that do. But that's not news, right? That's not going to support the argument that Muslims are unable to live in Canada and behave properly. People wonder why I don't give a lot of credence to stories of rape epidemics in Europe and the above is why. How can I take any media that focuses so heavily on only a single aspect of a complex situation? You and others may think that middle-of-the-road and left-wing media don't pay enough attention to the 'bad' that Muslims do, but at least they report everything, not just one side. That means that while Huffington Post may post an article more sympathetic to a Muslim who beats his wife, at least they report it. Unlike, for instance, your source - which posted only that part of the story that supported their agenda and as far as I could determine, You may not be anti-Muslim or anti-Immigrant, but you certainly are easily led Having a reasonable discussion with someone about the lack of rights women are afforded in many countries is possible, even with me. However, when someone says about 1.5 billion people that 'they are brought up in a cultures where women are second rate, possessions equivalent to goats or what have you, without the right to go to school and drive" ... well, so much for reasoned discussion. The fact is that what you say is (somewhat) true in Saudi Arabia, but in Egypt, women can drive, hold down jobs and are encouraged to go to school. The legal age of marriage for girls is 18 - the same as Canada, and older than what is legal in many States. Other Muslim countries have different laws and cultural standards. Pointing out these differences in women's status in Saudi vs. Egypt doesn't automatically mean I think Egypt is some paradise of female equality, because it isn't. And, just like in Canada - what is 'legal' isn't always what happens so no doubt girls younger than 18 marry. But people who paint a broad brush, as you do, on every single Muslim country/society/person as if they are exactly the same isn't trying to have a reasonable discussion about the issue of female equality or rights in Muslim-majority countries, or what challenges and cultural adjustments immigrants might face when they come to Canada: they are merely interested in 'proving' how backward, ignorant, misogynistic and unacceptable Muslims are. I don't *want* you to be a monster, what a remarkably stupid thing to say. And I am right. If you had any sense of history and the way in which public opinion is swayed against certain groups, you'd understand that the rhetoric against Muslims today is the same as the rhetoric that was used against Japanese in Canada and the States and in Germany against the Jews. Those groups were accused of undermining the cultural fabric of the society, of having an agenda to take over and impose their culture or laws on everyone, of being a threat to women and children - the same narrative being pushed by the anti-Muslim movement today. I have to admit that a part of me is fascinated watching the way in which people are swayed - I had always wondered how a whole society could turn a blind eye to what happened to the Japanese in Canada and the Jews in Germany. And while I assume that we will never get to the point where Muslims are rounded up and put into camps, I now see how that process happens, and that is really very interesting to me. However, the compassionate side of me doesn't want us going down that road at all, and so I continue to object to the the one-sided conversation the right-wing wants to have.
  15. Mosque in Minnesota bombed.   Can't find the story on right-wing media.

I never took you for childish, dialamah. At least not completely so.

Nor have the members who are not childish.

  17. Yes, indeed, because failing to express constant, hyperbolic criticism of anything and everything the news cares to feed us about Muslims means I support terrorists, misogyny, FGM, child-marriage, etc., etc. Clearly, the only reasonable choices is to hate Muslims indiscriminately or hate Canada/freedom/democracy. Sapper presented a fantastical choice and I gave a fantastical answer. Getting rid of just the 'bad' people is as realistic as getting rid of 'only one religion'. Sorry, have to head for work, no time for the rest.
  18. What? Pointing out that certain media only mentions domestic violence if it's perpetrated by a Muslim is advocating for covering up all domestic violence? Good grief.
  19. It's the people who choose the worst of either that I'd pick, not the religion itself. There are some very fine Christians and some very fine Muslims; it's the ones who think their special holy book gives them the right to oppress others that I'd get rid off.
  20. History and current events demonstrate quite clearly that when Christianity is allowed power within a society, it behaves much as Islam is currently behaving in the countries where it holds power. You live in a society where religious beliefs are not allowed to dictate policies or laws (mostly), where Christianity has had it's teeth pulled, so to speak, and so you think Christianity is the same everywhere. It's not. While there are no longer many countries where Christianity has political power, but the more power it has, the more women and minorities are oppressed. I'd provide you examples (although you've completely ignored the ones i've provided previously) but it's late, and I get up early for work, so g'nite.
  21. All men rape. Deal with it. Women have had to for fucking ever.
  22. My view of Islam is that it's a male-centric religion that the world would be better off without. Same view I have of Christianity.
  23. He lied; his sponsor had told him several times that it was illegal to beat one's wife in Canada. Not that such details matter to right-wing, anti-Muslim and anti-Immigration types - or the media they support. Here's an insightful article about the Rafias. Consider his situation, and then consider the fact that as the economy in Alberta declined, domestic abuse increased. Here's the thing: if the man hadn't been a Muslim refugee, this would not have been a story worth publishing. Every week, at least one woman dies as a result of domestic violence; how many more do you suppose end up in hospital? Three thousand women sleep in shelters every night, and 300 more are turned away - women trying to escape from violent partners. That's an awful lot of women who are suffering from domestic violence, don't you think? But these aren't Muslim women who've been beaten by a Muslim man, so it's not news. Why waste time on the many examples of Canada's wife-beating culture when you can focus in on a single Muslim refugee that will support your anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant agenda?
  24. Not on my account. I am well aware of the punishment women in some countries receive for being raped.
  25. I have heard of this, yes. In Western countries, its expressed as "She was drinking/partying/passed out/dressed like a slut, what did she expect?" Which is a hell of a lot better than "Put her in jail", but its the same basic mindset: "She was raped? She must have been doing something wrong."
