Fixing What Harper Broke: A to-do list
CITIZEN_2015 replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
A great list most of which I agree and it shows how much harm Harper regime has caused in Canada and to Canadians in his long long reign. Little has been said about C-36 though and it must be reconsidered by the new popular government of Justin Trudeau. I don't know much about the bill itself but rather the manner in which or reason for, it became law, This bill which was brought in by previous conservative regime and pushed by the former so called justice minister was prepared in rush without any consideration for sex workers' lives and safety (to meet the Supreme Court of Canada deadline which struck down previous sex trade laws because it assessed that they would endanger sex workers). More importantly sex workers who were most affected were NOT even consulted and were excluded. Also because of bill C-36 clients of those sex workers cannot report the underage and those forced into trade if and when they come across one as they would be prosecuted if they do and that is horrible. The conservative regime called its own selected witnesses and exclude those who wanted to speak against the bill. They did all these for political gains only and in order to keep their core support happy, that is mainly the religious right. The bill is opposed by sex workers groups and they call it "Pickton's law' referring to Robert Pickton who murdered many innocent sex workers because those previous laws which had made communications in public illegal caused the poor workers to be lured to his home and murdered. The new laws are even worse than the laws struck down by Supreme Court in 2013 according to sex worker organizations. The New Prime Minister Justine Trudeau opposed this bill and so did Mulcair. Now that he is the Prime Minister and with a majority he should reconsider the bill or best send it to the Supreme Court and there is a good chance that it will be struck down again for same reasons it was struck down in 2013. I don't know what laws would be the best (sex workers know it best as what laws protect them best) as I am not an expert in the subject nor does it affect me personally but I strongly oppose any laws that would endanger or adversely affect the most vulnerable citizens namely minorities, females, elderly and children. -

Very true and plus Campbell's statement that unemployment would remain high until the end of century (for another 7 years). Unemployment was high and people unable to find jobs or losing theirs and needed some hope and Chretien gave that hope to them by his red book promising to create hundreds of thousands of jobs soon. -

France is a perceived democracy and yes it is democracy for white christian French people but not for north African immigrants even the second generation who are born in France. That is likely why we see so much racial tensions and social issues in France. We don't wish to see Canada adopting that kind of TWO-TIERED citizenship status in which those citizens of Caucasian race enjoying the democracy and its benefits and those immigrants likely with color skin or a religion other than Christianity deprived from democracy. We don't wish racial tensions and social issues in this country where mobs of various political spectrum clash or attack each other in public. Where children of mixed race and immigrants are looked down where immigrants are deprived from equal rights and equal access to education and employment. A society that gives more rights to born or white citizens than immigrants or non-Christian immigrants in my book is a perceived democracy and under the Harper regime if God forbid he was ever going to be re-elected we would have that kind of democracy in Canada too but the nightmare is over and we now have our country back from those extremists who were bond to destroy the Canada we have grown to know based on racial harmony, respect of human rights and equality achieved as a results of hard work by current Canada's prime minister's father and many others, Mr. Pier Eliot Trudeau, God bless his soul... Canada in 4 years will be back to Canada that Pier Eliot Trudeau fought so hard to be (God bless his soul). Where people are judged based on the size of their hearts and minds rather than the size of their wallets or race or religion or skin color. ps - some people appear to define democracy as an elected government by popular vote. Or democracy simply is when nation votes to elect a government!!!!. If that is the case then Nazi Germany was a democracy too as Hitler came to power by popular vote!!!!. He (Hitler) used some tactics like fear and divisions to build support and get elected (against Jews at that time). Sounds familiar??? -

I wasn't aware we have different kinds of democracy. Democracy is not a democracy if people don't have the right to choose what they wear. The kind of democracy you refer to is likely a make up democracy in which the government decides what people can or cannot wear, can or cannot drink or eat. We have plenty of these types of so called democracies in the middle east we don't want those in Canada. -

I didn't say military invasion. I explained with examples why I said Canada was not democratic under conservatives. I didn't say dictatorship I said undemocratic with many examples. You countered by claiming that the previous governments were the same. First I don't think any government in the past was this corrupt and scandalist and second even if your counter argument is true then two wrongs doesn't make it right. Which prime minister took million dollar payments from businessmen in the form of brown paper bags? Mulroney or Joe Clarke? Never heard this before. Quebec liberals are responding to the demand of big majority of Quebecers and even though I am myself against niqab but also very much against it being forcefully taken off (because if is a women's choice and has to be respected). Niqab is a backward cultural thing and if we are true democracy as much as we may dislike it we should allow it. Quebecers appear very protective of their culture like language and else and I see it as a fault. But that is not the issue in this thread. I was saying that it should not have been used as a campaign tactic to make people fearfull and divide people to buy votes. -

The culture in western Canada is very different with Eastern Canada especially Quebec and Atlantic Canada. I lived there for 2 years.. It is a lot more conservative and in my view in a high percentage of people to the extreme and that is where the reform party was born and where Harper came from.So this was the essence of my comment rather than your very strange interpretation that I was saying Albertans are not Canadians!!!!!!. They are part of federation of course they are. Canada was not fully democratic and I have posted in another thread the reasons that under a majority conservative democracy was a thing of the past. For example the conservative government was found in contempt of the parliament (the symbol of democracy in many western counties) TWICE. They passed unpopular bills like bill C-51 and Bill C-36 using their majority (obtained because 25% of eligible voters voted for them in 2011). They came in conflict with the Supreme Court of Canada (the vanguard of democracy, human rights and constitution in Canada) so many times and they clearly showed their contempt for SCC. The countless number of scandals that followed their election in 2011, They clearly lacked transparency and accountability and were very secretive in all years. The fact that many people feared them to oppose them (example, Firing of Linda Keen for reporting an unsafe nuclear reactor) and the list goes on. I said undemocracy I did not say dictatorship (like rolling tanks on streets and shooting or jailing opponents). Yes desire for change was because of 4 years of corruptions and scandals. The Party under Mulroney and Joe Clarke was much more moderate and these people from Western Canada took it to such extreme including using race and religion as dividing tools to stir Canadians against each other so that a good majority of Canadians disliked them and voted them out of power (a great sign that we still have or abled to retain our democracy in this country even under such government) and they have to go back to moderation if they want to have any chance of returning to political scene of Canada. -

If you don't agree then debate to the contrary or rebuff the argument instead of making personal attacks or attacking the comments using insulting words without proposing an alternative positive statement. This is the civil way of doing things. Which part you don't agree the fact that they were outsiders to Eastern Canada from out west or the fact that Canada would be a better place in 4 years time? ps - I moved the post as I realized it was misplaced. -
The Liberals didn't win. The Conservatives lost.
CITIZEN_2015 replied to Machjo's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The liberals did win but also more so yes the conservatives lost big time. As campaign progressed the nation began to realize the bunch of corrupt individuals the conservative party had become and then they witnessed clear desperation on the part of conservative party at the highest rank which included systematic lies about Trudeau, personal attacks, attack ads and negativity and all that ended with former leader Harper standing shoulder to shoulder with the notorious Ford's bothers especially notorious Rob Ford. In addition to all above these are a summary of this conservative government's achievements as some of many reasons why they lost BIG time. 1. Contempt of parliament 2. More than 150 billion dollars of debt 3. The Senate scandal(Duffy, Meredith, Brazeau and others) 4. C-51. 5. Income splitting implemented, despite only helping 15% of the population. 6. Dean Del Mastro, Bruce Carson, Bev Oda, Chuck Cadman, Arthur Porter 7. Repeatedly being in violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and fighting with Supreme Court 8. Ended Canada Post delivery in urban areas. 9. Fired Linda Keen for reporting an unsafe nuclear reactor 10. The only country who withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol -

How Canada will look like in 4 year? It will look like the Canada it used to be before these invaders from the western oil sand desert of Alberta hidden as progressive conservatives but in fact the former Reform Party members took over this country. A peace making country internationally and a caring free democratic country nationally. However, it will be more than 4 years. Trudeau will win 2 more consecutive majorities and in about 12 years time after being the greatest Prime Minister of Canada making Canada both economically strong and environmentally sound would choose to step aside. Conservatives are as good as dead at least for the next decade and a half. They messed up so bad this time that their percent of vote will actually go down in the next election. -

I agree but it does NOT justify attack or abuse of those who choose to wear it. Also to remind you that tolerance and acceptance is very much a Canadian value.
-
I don't know why you say this. I have already indicated I prefer a strong minority to majority. I disagree with your tactics at this stage of the game suddenly starting posting against liberals based on theoretical polls especially when I know you are not a conservative supporter so divide and conquer is not your goal.
-
Until a few weeks ago you were staunch supporter of conservatives and now NDP. Changing color so fast and between two extremes REALLY!! A clear case of DIVIDE AND CONQUER.
-
We both know NDP has no chance in the government. You wish to divide and conquer. And also the reason they have never had scandals in the past is because they have never been in the government!!!!!!!!!
-
No he has NOT documented or provided any link to indicate that this has happened before. In other words no similar even that Jewish women have been attacked simply because they were Jews or the way they chose to dress so his comments are totally irrelevant and tries to score points. And as I said two wrongs does not make it right in other words he is saying it is okay to attack defenseless women for wearing hejab because Jews have been attacked too or bald men or hot chicks have been attacked too. More importantly he has provided NO PROOF that attacks on Muslim women had happened BEFORE the conservatives made niqab an election issue. Seriously!!!!!!!
-
Yeah right the usual DIVIDE and CONQUER by conservatives. You fool me once shame on you you fool me twice shame on me.
-
I have to give it t him. He has some nerves especially after I listed a list of Stephen Harper recent conservative scandals!!!!!!!!.
-
I am still interested in polls. At the very least they showed us who had the momentum past week but I also stated the fact that RECENT polls have been wrong in predicting the results. Discouraging people to vote for liberals or showing overconfidence may result re-election of Stephen Harper and I do NOT wish to take that risk that at any cost and as for national or public interest such even would be disastrous for the national or public interest.
-
You wish to talk about scandals?? Then read: http://www.thestar.com/news/federal-election/2015/08/14/a-conservative-collection-of-harper-government-scandals.html and a lot more: https://harperwatch.wordpress.com/ What we cannot afford is another conservative government.
-
This is true if the polls are right and all those with intention to vote for liberals or NDP actually show up and vote. It is a lot easier to pick up a phone at home than going to a voting station (especially for those without cars or students) and vote. Also some voters may say well liberals are going to be elected anyway so I stay home and watch the result lets others vote (overconfidence is dangerous game to play) and some may say Liberals will form a majority and I want Justin to pass the test first and not vote. There has been a few recent elections in both Canada (provincial levels) and abroad (UK) where polls were completely wrong for all above reasons.

Strategic Voting - It needs to be done
CITIZEN_2015 replied to marcus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Thank you Big Guy very much. -
No poll suggests an imminent Liberal majority. By saying so you scare away Liberal voters and/or take away the will to vote from some of them and you may actually help to re-elect Stephen Harper and another year or years of repeat nightmare. The best poll suggest liberals at 38% and that is a clear minority and they could be as low as 34% as per poll yesterday and conservatives at 33% and a more efficient conservative vote would re-elect them easy. All the conservatives need is for a few percentage of Liberal voters stay home and a few more percent than polls suggest vote for them and they could form another majority government. The liberals need 40+% to even touch a majority and not a single poll suggest that. In fact based on past polls underestimating conservatives and overestimating Liberals at this moment it is about 20 to 30% chance we may see a return of Harper and there is NO guarantee he will be ousted in a minority situation anytime soon. He could stay on for years with his usual political manipulations and tricks. Liberal voters do not get overconfident. Your vote is essential to end this corrupt scandalist undemocratic fear monger divisive evil conservative party out of our government. DO VOTE ON MONDAY. It is not over until it is over.
-
Thanks for this. This is the best result I could hope for, A strong Liberal minority for now and once Trudeau passes his test for good transparent government then a majority for him in 2 years or so.
