  1. "Cultural attitudes" can change, and often have and still do from one generation of immigrants to the next generation of their children raised here. And the law takes care of any illegal behaviours. There is no valid argument for discriminating against Muslims in immigration.
  2. Highly unlikely. 25 years, I expect. Are you still going to "kill the bastard" anyway? Are you going to take out other people too in your killing spree? Are you going to brainwash somebody else into doing it for you?
  3. You haven't "proved" anything ... except that you're incapable of comprehending the facts and realities, prejudiced, a real loose cannon who wants to "kill the bastard" ... and you are quite possibly a very violent and dangerous person.
  4. Hmm ... what law allows that? Are you a homicidal criminal OW? One just never knows who one's dealing with on an anonymous board like this. You're certainly not much interested in even knowing the law, let alone upholding our laws.
  5. You are quite ill-informed and I see that you choose to remain that way due to a religious prejudice.
  6. NEVER heard of that before! Probably because they didn't hit a thing.
  7. Evidence please?
  8. It's quite the tangled web. I believe the US military court had to define Khadr as an illegal or non-combatant? to even charge him with a crime. I also suspect his conviction will be overturned.
  9. It has to be an egregious crime with clear evidence. Very doubtful. It's not even clear that it's a crime to kill ... in war. See Omni's post above.
  10. Yes it would. He was a minor under control of his father. We will see how a real US court deals with that during his appeal of his conviction. I think there is no real evidence that he even threw that grenade. It's much more likely that his father's AlQuaeda friend threw it.
  11. Sometimes evil masquerades as 'good' to trick gullible people. The destruction of Syria by the USA and allies is pure greed, pure evil. So was Iraq. So was Afghanistan. Anywhere in the world where there is conflict, you can bet the US corporatocracy is doing its evil work to take control of the government and its finances, and the country's resources. John Perkins, author of 'Economic Hitman' calls it "mutant ... viral ... predatory ... capitalism" It is US based, and it is evil.
  12. Hmmm ... Then perhaps we should define it as sales of new vehicles?
  13. His mother is the only other adult who could be considered responsible, but I doubt very much that there would be any evidence that she she forced Omar into AlQuaeda. That was his father's doing.
  14. You're on. End of production of fossil fuel vehicles ... in North America? I suggest we'll have difficulty knowing about the whole world.
  15. His father is dead. It's odd that seemingly intelligent people here don't grasp that in a modern civil society, we don't hold children responsible for the sins or crimes of their fathers or other family members. I'm glad we have laws, because without them I get the feeling we could easily have a rather uncivil lynch mob going after Omar Khadr. I had hoped we had evolved beyond that.
  16. You can send your $50 to your local food bank.
  17. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2017/aug/07/fossil-fuel-subsidies-are-a-staggering-5-tn-per-year Could be faster if we stopped subsidizing fossil fuels globally!
  18. “They flew out of their country after the earthquake and they don’t want to to go back there because there is no hope in the country. They are seeking some place to live,” she said. “Leaving with your children, it’s a very desperate move.” It remains to be seen whether Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board rules it’s enough. Not a problem. It's handled. They'll be processed, maybe more quickly depending on which province they elect to go to. About 60% may be successful. Informative article. Thanks. I can't see how Haiti is a "safe country" for them to return to: The crisis hindered the Haitian government’s ability to meet the basic needs of its people, resolve longstanding human rights problems, or address continuing humanitarian crises, even as a new crisis emerged. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew, a devastating storm, hit Haiti’s southwest. President Privert estimated the losses surpassed the entire national budget and warned of an impending serious food crisis, driven by the loss of crops from the storm. As of August, authorities had failed to assist many of the 61,000 individuals still living in displacement camps since the 2010 earthquake to resettle or return to their places of origin, and many continued to face environmental risks and the threat of forced evictions. An ongoing drought affecting much of the country pushed the number of people living with food insecurity to one-third of the population. Haiti’s cholera epidemic has claimed more than 9,300 lives and infected more than 780,000 people in five years. There were more than 21,000 suspected cases and, as of July, 200 deaths in 2016. Cholera cases surged in October in the communities most impacted by Hurricane Matthew. It's just one blow after another in Haiti since the earthquake. They'd be in displacement camps there, if Haiti even agreed to accommodate them at all. We can accommodate 150/day somewhere in Canada.
  19. only-governments-can-stem-tide-of-tourism-sweeping-the-globe https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/aug/05/only-governments-can-stem-tide-of-tourism-sweeping-the-globe?CMP=share_btn_link “Why call it tourist season if we can’t kill them?” Few industries were better positioned to take advantage of the 21st century than tourism. Open borders for the first time in modern history, leaps in technology from aeroplanes to the internet and the rise of the global middle class (think China) meant travel moved from a pastime to an economic engine. In less than two decades, travel doubled from 536m trips abroad in 1995 to 1bn in 2012. When the Cold War closed off much of the world to tourism, that figure was only 25m. Wow. They don't like us! Who does like the tourists in their own neighbourhoods. Lol Hordes during the season taking all the primo housing and jacking up prices, then a hollowed out and unemployed community in the off seasons. Lost, tired, cranky, cheap, drinking, partying, puking, littering, whining and complaining ... but SPENDING ... tourist$. I always like to hear the travel adventures of mlw'rs. Have at it.
  20. I was trying to think how to say this, and found this:
  21. That's all speculation, mostly debunked from what I've read about GAI. People might quit crummy jobs, but they can then afford the education/training they need to do the job they want, or the time and money to start the business they want, a parent can afford to be home with kids, reducing child care subsidies and other costs. It actually improves the economy. You don't seem to consider the many other economic benefits. No, costs don't increase because there are savings in many other social costs, and people are now able to progress to better incomes (and pay more taxes), instead of being stuck in "crummy jobs". And those providing 'the crummy jobs' may have to sharpen up and make it worth people's time ... or automate.
  22. What I have read indicates that with a Guaranteed Annual Income, the disincentive to work is much smaller than expected. Of course, that's different than welfare which does disincentivise working because benefits are lost. GAI is not lost (until a relatively high ceiling), so people can work to improve their income. GAI also reduces criminal and social problems, and consequent policing and health costs. As for taxes, I've heard that argument before too, but never seen any evidence of those effects either. 'Common sense' often isn't.
  23. Can you provide citations for that? I've heard that speculation, but I've never seen any evidence.
  24. Well, this thread is about Islamophobia in Canada, but has now degenerated into the usual generalized stereotypes and anti-immigrant hysteria.
