You seem to be missing the fine points I raised. I do NOT believe government has a good handle on DELIVERING sick care, but they are the correct source for single payer "insurance" (as I understand it a lot closer to the continental EU model). The UK version is a disaster (see where they place on the scale I posted earlier). If Can/Australia versions was so bad, why do they rate so high in both outcome and cost effectiveness? The "market" model of USA is even worse than UK - for those who don't have solid gold insurance coverage. You are hung up on ideology. I am merely observing actual results. Of course, another HUGE factor is 9 years of leader and cabinet all of whom could barely qualify as a WalMart greeter.

And here you have an example of what is wrong and why it is not working. You have been told socialism is "evil" but you need to recognize that many things can be and ARE done socialistically far, far better than in a "free market" way. Read about sick care and you should realize it ONLY works well on a national scale when provided as a government service and insurance. Doesn't mean government has to or even should deliver that service, but EVERY so-called "capitalist" country has found that they really need socialized medicine to even come close to have good national stats. I no longer have the numbers handy, but even in the USA the majority of the population depends upon Medicare, Medicaid, vet benefits or government supplied medical coverage from public sector employment. Wouldn't you call Trump a "free market capitalist" (he actually is anything but...but....) in his term in and term out he only proposes to cut federally funded abortion, not all of the socialized medicine. Why is socialized medicine more effective? In the West we practice "sick care" as there is little money flowing until you become ill or injured. The old saying "you get what you paid for" applies. So, free market medicine HAS to concentrate its efforts on where the money is. HEALTH care is preferable to socialized medicine as it can minimize the cost to the tax payer of providing medical care, whereas successful Health care would deprive the "free market" of revenue it requires to generate maximum profitability. Where the Americans screw up horribly is not being able to separate essential services from business. They are diametrically opposite things.

As usual, people try to divide everything into some kind of simplistic left/right question when in reality their are 4 ideologies distributing within our economy and society: Communism; Socialism; Capitalism and Casino Capitalism. AND: on top of that one major function that when applied assures that none of them can work equitably. IMHO the place where communism steps over the line from socialism is defined by the Regina Manifesto that says it all: the means of production, income of people and institutions as well of price of goods and services to be exchanged belong exclusively to and operated by the state. Read what actually brought communism to Canada: https://canadiandimension.com/articles/view/the-regina-manifesto-1933-co-operative-commonwealth-federation-programme-fu Sounds good to a 12YO, but as 100MILLION dead farmers and their families discovered when Chairman Mao nationalized the family farm - it doesn't work in the real world. So, why did something that sounds like Utopia fail so badly? Socialism (again IMHO) is that property of re-distributing wealth to provide services that everyone needs or deserves as a citizen and human being. EVERY government on this planet provides social services from their tax base or from nationalized resources or industries -some more than others. Take a look at sick care as an example: there are several factors, but price and effectiveness both figure in and I could only find one article that combines both into a singular rating: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/best-healthcare-in-the-world if you are wading through the tome you will find the whole list down towards the end. Surprisingly, the wealthiest economies on the planet (US and China one of which defines itself as capitalist and the other communist) son't fare anywhere near as well as "mildly socialistic" Canada, Australia, Taiwan, S Korea. So, why does this asperity exist? Capitalism is defined in my house as anything that employs private OR SOMETIMES GOVERNMENT capital to fund resource, production, services, etc into a generally market determined price for exchange. There only 2 things you can do to create wealth, and you could and MUST do them within any system and that is to add value to a resource or deliver a service in support of value added production. ANYTHING else is nothing but wealth redistribution - including exploiting raw natural resources (as they are already valued and possessed by the state of ownership). ALL systems become capitalistic when they create wealth. So why doesn't every country on the planet simply provide the mechanism for wealth creation (actually, to some extent they must and do) and result in unlimited national prosperity? Finally, the "right" side is clearly divided between capitalism (we often call Main Street) and Casino Capitalism (Wall/Bay Street) where the vast majority of money moving back and fourth is not wealth that has been created but wealth being re-distributed from purely speculative assignment of values. Problem we have today is almost the entire world has confused speculative gain with creation of wealth - when speculative gain merely re-distributes value from those who have created and retained wealth by inflating the money supply to cover the speculative gains. So why can't we all just cash in on "money for nothing"??? Of these four systems, the first 3 can and do exist and could possibly work - whereas the fourth that now dominates our economies is totally unsustainable. What makes three kind of work, but stumble and fail and the fourth completely unworkable one rule the roost? The answer is dead simple: allowing governments to dispense privilege vs. genuinely equitably providing for the functions of the first 3. Yes, you are being told by a genuine capitalist pig that communism and socialism are workable (you will note as I have already pointed out EVERY country today has components of each in its workings). Where things fall apart is when privilege is assigned to one group over another - and that in the extreme is an outright dictatorship where one person or small group acquires the privilege of dictating everything to everyone - be it Putin's Russia, NK's dynasty - or Wall Street's ownership of the central banking system and economic government of the largest economy in history.

more like 3,000. Problem is everyone picks one point in time to define who/what is the "legitimate" nation/creed of Israel/Palestine. It is not a "simple" problem.
-
Amazing how many people ignore that fact. Unfortunately, it is a lot more complicated as Jews have been connected to Israel for 3,000 years now. IMHO: the real question is how far back does any previous occupier's claim go???

Legal bombs are what is needed. What the BBC and Al Jazeera conveniently forget is the real leadership of Hamas (and I expect a mirror image at Hezbollah) are those who are there to skim cash into their personal bank accounts - and for the 3 at the top of Hamas that is over ten billion USD. People think these things are all about religious and political ideology, but in fact they are simply about money. Do you have any idea how many UN officials you can bribe with 10b in your account? Imagine that all of the tens of thousands of rockets that Hamas amassed within Gaza got there? The ...uh... COMMISSIONs paid to the gate keepers (i.e. those in their office in Qatar) on each one of those tens to hundreds of thousands items flows straight into their bank accounts. Every time a crooked Swiss oil trading company (i.e. ANY of them) does a phony deal to sell Iranian oil (usually given a Certificate of Origin on the other side of the Straits of Hormuz = UAE or...wait for it....Qatar) blended with some other crude in a thinly veiled effort to disguise it) another 100 million goes into the works. Start grabbing bank accounts, seizing cargos and arresting their UN accomplices, oil and arms dealers and THEN you could put a tiny dent in the real problem. Of course, if Mossad was really on their game, they could grab the cash and eliminate the leadership in a quiet way. THAT would send a message to Khamenei that might make the POS think twice.
-
The top leadership of Hamas has enjoyed a charmed life in Qatar - not getting their hands dirty in Gaza. Between the three of them: Ismail Haniyeh, Moussa Abu Marzuk and Khaled Masha they have skimmed over $10 Bn from money supposedly going to Gaza

Israel has now (17:00 GMT) confirmed him dead.

Looks like the IDF got Sinwar. Good for them. https://www.axios.com/2024/10/17/sinwar-hamas-israel-killed-gaza I am amazed about the constant protests in support of Hamas that don't seem to realize that the IDF has been militarily opposed by Hamas for more than a year now. Right under the noses of several UN entities everyone watched Hamas (and Hezbollah) build massive armies and arsenals with thousands of rockets aimed at Israel - and even with a full year of all out war there is STILL a Hamas (and very much Hezbollah) infrastructure threatening Israel. I am not the IDF (or Mossad)'s best supporters, but the Gaza thing and now Lebanon (plus the obvious attacks directly from their puppet masters in Iran) is demonstrable proof that not only the citizenry but the massive UN element that has funded and delivered huge levels of support that turned a blind - and in many cases all seeing eye towards the obvious threat to Israel.

Having spent a fair bit of time in China I can tell you it is impossible to pick some random number(s) out of thin air and even pretend it represents something from which you can relate the standard of living here to there. We have costs in Can and USA that people in China do not have. We have entire segments of our economy that produce diddlyshit but cost us a significant amount of dosh (lawyers, insurance, private medicine, massive government bureaucracies and debt). Another HUGE difference is most people in China get up in the morning and do productive work whereas here fewer than 1 in 6 create any wealth. and on it goes. Some other significant differences is NOBODY in China reports what they actually earn and how they earn it, so there is no way to accurately measure that value (what I can say is you don't buy all of those Chinese and Euro cars on a grand a month). Refer to the Mao dynasty that killed off maybe 100 million people from starvation to understand why they don't trust government. Also: important to understand the real money left when the Japanese invaded to look for enough gold to finance WWII - but since China has been the dominant economy of the region for 5,000 years they have had a lot more time to earn (and sequester) wealth that we have had barely a century of branch plant economy to try to do so. I could go on for a hundred pages, but this should be a good start to understand it is an extremly different economy and society. AND: as to the poor quality from China stuff: if you go there and look for the cheapest shit you can find you will get cheap shit. If you go there to respectfully look to buy good stuff and are prepared to pay and put your own QA/QC in place, you can get some of the best stuff in many market segments. You need to be there and know WTF you are looking at to be able to find what can be done. You also need to fully understand the language and culture to have a hope in Hell of finding all of the options.

Yeah, religion has no business being anywhere near nor having any influence of politics. History has shown how "religion" is the excuse for the Big Lie that is used to try to control people - to the benefit of the Big Liars. To make the hideous implication that Judeo-Christianity is somehow "good" and Islam is "bad" can not come out of the mouth of anyone who has studied religion and history. You really need to be a brick or two short of a load to think that some spook in the sky is running the whole show and will allow you to "live forever". Any serious discussion around sustainability starts with population. Fix that humanely and we could deal with other issues, but leave that alone and you will soon find out how inhumane "humanity" can and WILL become. Any spook with a spec of decency would have taught his (or her) mindless mass of followers that on day 1. Instead the message has been to breed like rats and obediently follow and give all of your assets to "the church" (insert whatever institution fits.....geez GOVERNMENT also seems to fit that one to a tee). So, you can see why "government" by theocracy is simply government by another name.

Trump is a Conman and a Fraud
cannuck replied to Rebound's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I have no doubt many of the charges proposed or laid against Trump are quite real, nor do I doubt any of those alleged for Slow Joe are any less real. Anyone who thinks there is ANYONE in politics who isn't a lying POS has no experience in the real world of politics. What I find even more amazing and amusing is that one could take Camel Hair seriously as a candidate. -

You are discounting the value that any particular mouthpiece based on their exposure. It is no different for Musk, Gates or Trump. The "analysts" spin whatever BS spews out of their yap to bet the equities up or down simply to play their sick games. Trump was not in Washington to "drain" the swamp, just to be another alligator churning the sludge. -

Being listed has SFA to do with the value of the company. Book value is the ONLY value to the company and the only value calculated into the fincial statement. What happens "in the market" has little to do with the company and everything to do with nothing but "the market"/ -

cannuck replied to Rebound's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Just a little point you seem to be missing: the market value of a company has SFA to do with it's solvency. In fact: is so artificial and irrelevant that it can only appear as a footnote in a financial statement. You are confusing Casino Capitalism with the real thing. I bring that up because the con man you are attacking is a product of the biggest con game on the planet - Manhattan finance district. Those at Goldman Sucks or any other institution spin lies and amass purely speculative fortunes also in the billions exactly as did/does Trump - he just isn't as smooth with the execution. That said: the shift to the left (ushered in by Wall Street through globalism) has pretty much gutted the US economy. Protectionism is unfortunately about all that's left to try to pull a rabbit out of that hat. -
How Canada’s middle class got shafted
cannuck replied to BeaverFever's topic in Business and Economy
darnit! have to be careful and exclude the particulars, but: one of my associates was pulled away from his own business to use his former financial skills to salvage a Canadian tech company that developed the ONLY viable and sustainable bio/organically sourced nano material with extremely high yield/low cost. Doing is DD he found that our illustrious government poured $15mm into a Quebec mine that extracts the intermediate feedstock unsustainably and has as yet to produce a gram of the nano-tech stuff. The Canajun way, eh? -
Let me start by pointing out that the combined intellectual strength of the entire Little Turd cabinet could even read and understand this bill - nor do I see much from the other side of the floor that could do much better. I strongly suspect and suggest this is coming from VIDO / CFIA who are the government bureaucracy that does a FANTASTIC job of making our food supply in Canada truly safe. This will go back to the BSE outbreak where US feed infected Canadian herds - that the US could deny because they simply didn't look for it. I am well known to enjoy attacking the incredible amount of waste and incompetence in government and a certain party now in power, but this is NOT a bill that I can see some agenda buried in....except to provide a mechanism for a critical agency to be able to do their job in an emergency situation with effect.

J.D. Vance | The Universities are the Enemy
cannuck replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
spoken by someone with no experience with black students in US educational systems. My very close friend and long time business partner in NYC (who happens to be black borne in Alabama) built his businesses in "underprivileged" areas such as the Bronx - with the intent of proving to the world that African Americans (in the '70s) could operate and staff a business as well as anyone else. When the borough offered him a larger building (that he needed for one contract) it came with the "strong suggestion" that said office provide "qualified" candidates to meet his stated standards. He required simply an HS diploma and physical ability to perform the tasks of the positions in question. He was sent a few dozen people who were given training from staff at another location, but the day the trainees arrived at their work place, everything ground to a halt. Those who were supposed to do procurement, inventory, shipping and receiving - ALL of whom had produced a HS diploma and were graduated by accredited public schools - NONE of them could read and write well enough to perform even the most basic functions. Now in your defense: I could not say and doubt that a white student from the same schools would have been treated any differently - but from his experience and those of his children - there was and still is a very racial component in admission and grading in at least NY schools and post secondary institutions.
