Given the media coverage that has been given regarding the 'switch' that was used in the NFL player disciplining his child, I thought this would make a good topic to discuss. When my children were growing up, I rarely 'hit them', however I may have spanked them from time to time on the bum. Mostly, I discussed with them how their behaviour would affect me, 'their mother'. They seemed to listen very carefully to those discussions. For example, when my daughter was caught running the train tracks with a friend and was brought home, I told her that I would have been devastated to have a policeman visit me one day and tell me that my daughter was killed by a train while playing on the tracks. She took this talk very seriously and it was far more effective than a switch to the legs and arms. First of all, it drove home to her that she could have died, and secondly, it would have caused me terrible pain. We discipline children based on what we now know. Does that mean spanks etc should be banned?

It doesn't matter if they are arrested at a higher rate. If they are arrested for domestic violence, we should draw attention to it. Let's take the opportunity to exploit these sports celebrities being caught red-handed committing violent acts against women and children to draw attention to the issue. They earn millions of dollars each year. They will eventually buy their way out of the mess they got themselves into and they will be long gone from the media spotlight. In the meantime, the media has drawn attention to this very serious issue of domestic violence. What's so wrong with that?

Let's not forget the banking industry, the insurance industry, the investment industry which have highly complex systems and are not unionized. Do you think the highly skilled, stable, and educated workforce from these industries are influenced by the wages of the public workforce. Not likely!

Again, more generalizations and 'expertise' by someone who assumes plenty. How is it CLEAR that it will result in higher turnover, less effective, capable blah blah blah workers. Do you have any idea of the number of university grads that cannot find jobs and who would gladly jump at a chance working for the government even with less pay, less benefits etc. The public sector does not set the bar on many occupations in the private sector. Do they set the bar in the IT profession. Not likely. Do they set the bar in the film industry, the legal profession? Not likely. You really need to get a grip on your long winded expert 'opinions'.

I really get tired of these 'men' who quote these men 'under investigation' as having admirable character traits and being community minded, strong minded blah blah blah. They should stop defending these men who are under criminal investigation and think about the greater good of protecting women and children.

I thought this thread was about football penalties. Talk about thread drift! Looks like another NFL star 'Dwyer' was arrested on domestic charges. We've had 4 guys in the last few weeks charged with assault. Isn't it time for the NFL to set a good example for men to behave like 'good, honourable men' towards women and children instead of rewarding them with multi million dollar contracts and turning a blind eye. Is the tide turning or just a blip? Sadly, I think it's just a blip in the reputation of the NFL.

Having read through this bs thread, i can understand your response. I do not believe that 'white canadians' are experts on 'black americans'. Of course we are not. We know that. But we try to understand.

I did see Maher in Vancouver one time. I was not impressed. His total narrative was based on american politics! Who cares! He came to Canada and he just seemed so focused on America and had no clue on Canadian politics. I was very disappointed in his monologue. I would not pay to see him again in Canada.

When we can draw attention to domestic abuse, it benefits everyone. On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. In 2011, from the 89 police reported spousal homicides, 76 of the victims (over 85%) were women. On any given day in Canada, more than 3,300 women (along with their 3,000 children) are forced to sleep in an emergency shelter to escape domestic violence. Every night, about 200 women are turned away because the shelters are full. This is of course not isolated to the NFL, but when we can draw attention to this issue, is it such a bad thing? Why should women have to take the elevator to avoid abuse?

It looks like she did and I thought it might go that way. However, he will spend sometime in prison. It may not be enough to satisfy the victim's family, however, I do think he will do time. Personally, I think he should spend the rest of his natural life in prison.
