Ferguson unrest
WestCoastRunner replied to Black Dog's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
So let me guess. These protests across the country tonight consist of individuals who are all 'left leaning' citizens and not of individuals seeking a justice system that represents all races with equal rights. -
Except that you didn't apply much weight to vulnerable people.
-
A very good example of people and their misguided judgement is when prostitutes from the Vancouver DTES repeatedly complained to the VPD that prostitutes were missing and the VPD dismissed the complaints. What did they eventually discover? Pickton!!

I'm certainly not going to argue with you on financial advice. UBC has every right to determine where to invest their money and they have shown that divesting of fossel fuel companies will not harm their portfolio and will in fact perhaps improve it. Their vision: “As one of the world’s leading universities, the University of British Columbia creates an exceptional learning environment that fosters global citizenship, advances a civil and sustainable society, and supports outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada and the world.” UBC deserves great credit for recognizing its leadership role, and in expressing that through its sustainability commitments. But it is wrong for UBC to continue to profit from its investments in an industry whose core product inevitably and significantly perpetuates dangerous climate change. Supporting such a destructive industry is inconsistent with UBC’s core values of sustainability, leadership, and innovation. As President Gupta said in his installation speech: “Each generation has a responsibility to take the world as we find it and do our utmost to make it better.”48 UBC cannot live up to that promise when it is invested in an industry that poses a direct threat to the well-being of future generations, including our own students. If it is wrong to wreck the planet, then it is wrong to profit from doing so." https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/ubcc350/pages/43/attachments/original/1414421298/UBC_Fossil_Fuel_Divestment_-_Responsible_Investment_Proposal_October_27_2014.pdf?1414421298

Actually you did suggest a free for all. "The accusers history should very well be on trial if you're going to prove the guilt of the accused."

Moderating Mapleafweb's Moderation

There is no way this site can make money and they know it. To make money off a site, you need millions of visitors. It is quite simply a numbers game. You need the numbers to get the ad revenue. It's not going to happen here so I'm not sure what WWWTT is referring to. I think he is confused as to the purpose of this site as you mentioned earlier Cyber. -

Perhaps you are just getting annoyed because individuals are standing up for their beliefs, values and the rights of minorities. -
Are there limits on attacking a complainant’s credibility in a sexual assault case? There was a time when a person accused of sexual assault was permitted to question the complainant in a sexual assault case about their past sexual history as a way of attacking the complainant’s credibility. This is no longer permitted by the courts. If a person accused of sexual assault wishes to ask questions about an accuser’s prior sexual activity, a special application must be brought before the trial judge prior to commencing the questioning. The Court may allow an accused person to ask questions about a complainant’s prior sexual history if it is relevant to an issue in the case and has significant probative value. However, this questioning can not be used to suggest either that the complainant is more likely to have consented and/or, is less worthy of belief by reason alone of her prior sexual conduct. This type of questioning is simply not relevant at trial. It isn't a free for all to attack the accuser's history as you are suggesting.

Perhaps you should provide stats to back that up. UBC has stats to back up their decisions: "There are many opportunities in the market for an endowment to make equivalent or better returns. A study by S&P Capital IQ found that if universities had divested 10 years ago from the stocks recommended by Fossil Free, their endowments would be even larger than they are now. A study by the Aperio Group (an investment management firm) shows that fossil fuel divestment would have a miniscule (0.0034%) impact on returns. There are also increasing concerns about a “carbon bubble,” that the business model that provides the basis for the fossil fuel industries’ current value is unsustainable because much of their wealth is premised on fossil fuel reserves that can’t be used if we are to maintain a safe climate. "Fossil fuel free funds already exist. In addition, when large investors such as university endowments express a desire for fossil-fuel free funds, the financial industry will respond to offer more such funds. In this way UBC and other large investors can wield its influence to open up sustainable investment options for smaller investors and individuals." The reaction here is typical of individuals not supportive of the best interests of our environment and planet. You can read more here.

Your exaggeration doesn't help victims or the perpetrators. Your reaction is not an uncommon reaction. And how can you assume it was not serious?

A Sign of What Do-Gooders Can Accomplish
WestCoastRunner replied to Argus's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Quotes from your article above: "In as many as 85 to 90 percent of interventions, the addict agrees to enter treatment." "Although it can be effective, involuntary treatment is not without challenges. After all, most treatment centers are not lock-down facilities where clients are physically forced to stay against their will, so the addict has to decide at some point whether they are willing to do the work of recovery." "Because ambivalence and outright resistance are common, many treatment centers are well-equipped to help addicts recognize the importance of staying in treatment. For example, they may use motivational interviewing to help the addict connect with their own desire to stay clean or call upon family or employers as leverage. Once the addict is clean and sober, their thinking clears and they are often more willing to commit to the rest of the treatment process." -

This report is over 15 years old. Research and treatments for people with addictions have come a long way since then. -
You are the one that brought up rape.
-
My goodness. Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration. Now we are accusing these MP's of rape? Is that what you are saying?
-
Not exactly rocket science to figure that out.

Early next year, the University of B.C. faculty will vote in a referendum calling for the university’s complete divestment of all its holdings in fossil fuel assets. "This is a similar approach when the apartheid campaign began in getting major institutions to divest (of their South African assets) and in influencing U.S. foreign policy against the South African regime. That’s kind of the model the fossil fuel divestment movement is inspired by.” If this is successful, UBC will be the first Canadian university to divest its fossil fuel assets, organizers said, and it would rank as the most comprehensive such divestment in the academic world. Again, the 'left coast' is leading the way in innovative ways to tackle climate issues.

Your myth #3 is a quote from a drug treatment center that is a for profit company. Do you seriously believe that "Virtually no one wants drug treatment." You are saying that every single addict who has sought treatment for drug/alcohol addiction is doing it for someone other then themselves. Plenty of drug addicts seek treatment because they can no longer stand the life they live and they are choosing to abstain so they can have a better life. -
I just don't get what you are saying here.
-
That is the biggest problem with this issue. Does this mean you want to do away with a charge of 'sexual harassment'? Have you checked in with victims of 'sexual harassment' to obtain their thoughts on whether it is meaningless or not?

My high school teacher with Harper...
WestCoastRunner replied to Bonam's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
This is one of the most important skills that a teacher can pass on to a student. It is too easy to follow and accept the status quo but it takes courage, insight and curiosity to challenge absolutely everything. -
And unbelievably we still have people that refuse to believe well over a dozen women who have come out with these accusations. Are they all conspiring against him? What do they have to gain?

Vancouver has been quite innovative in their approach to dealing with the issues in the DTES and that does include the needle exchange program much to the horror of many people across Canada . We all know that 'forced treatments' for addicts does not work in the long term so the following programs are voluntary: Vancouver's Downtown Community Court: As the first of its kind in Canada, Vancouver's Downtown Community Court pioneered the innovative approach that brings together justice, health and social services in one location – a purpose-designed courthouse. A high number of offenders in downtown Vancouver have health and social problems, including alcoholism, drug addiction, mental illness, homelessness and poverty. The court takes a problem-solving approach to address offenders' needs and circumstances and the underlying causes of their criminal behaviour.Drug Treatment Court of Vancouver: The Drug Treatment Court of Vancouver (DTCV) is a specialized court that provides an alternative approach to the mainstream court process for individuals who commit criminal offences to support their addiction to cocaine, heroin or crystal methamphetamine. Participation in the DTCV is voluntary and requires participants to take part in a supervised 14 month intensive day treatment program through the Drug Court Treatment and Resource Centre (DCTRC). Vancouver has one of the most aggressive approaches to harm reduction resulting in drastic reductions in drug usage, transmission of disease etc and yet the conservative govt continues to try and shut down these harm reduction programs. That just simply does not make sense to me and the majority of people living in BC. Vancouver has based their approach on the 'Four Pillars': harm reduction, prevention, treatment and enforcement. This is a very good article worth reading.
