  1. It's great to see so many members here who are just as passionate about these issues as women. To show your support and solidarity with women, why not contact your local MP and encourage federal participation in this 'national leaders debate'. We have not progressed very much since 1984 and if we can get a National Debate to further progress these issues, who cares who initiates it. If it's women who organize the debate, who cares! At least we are all working towards the same results for everyone. Isn't this what some of you men are saying. These issues affect us all. So, put your money where your mouth is.
  2. Read my response about women and their past successes.
  3. Let's turn this into a beauty pageant. And while we are at it let's diminish the women I mentioned above because of a miniscule number of female politicians
  4. lets get real here. There were 2 white 'journalist students' looking for a story. There is nothing here. Move on. It's a silly debate
  5. Apparently they are separate debates. We still don't have 'subsidized or universal daycare', an inquiry into domestic violence against women, especially aboriginal women and other critical issues that affect women. I'm still not sure I understand your point here.
  6. More examples of women playing a role in peacekeeping initiatives. They may not have been politicians but can you imagine what more they could have accomplished if they were: “[in Somalia] over 1,000 youth aged between 18-25 years have been salvaged from the notorious Al Shabbab militia by SWA members after they expressed their interest in leaving the group. In the Somali civil war women find themselves at the center of conflicts fought between their sons, husbands and relatives. Peacebuilding conferences in Somaliland, in Borama and Sanaag (1993) and Hargeisa (1996), would not have taken place without the collective lobbying of women pressuring the elders to intervene to end the conflicts. “In Liberia, due to the presence of women in the peace negotiations, a peace agreement was concluded and language on gender balance in government institutions was included in the peace agreement." "In India, in the northeastern state of Manipur, more than 10,000 people have died as a result of armed violence. The Women's Network of Manipur, survivors of the armed conflict, was created by women to heal the wounds caused by armed violence in their community. The Network sponsors education and supports the children of survivors and raises awareness about the effects of gun violence in the community." “Even if women don’t qualify as direct actors in peace dialogues, history shows that they have managed to participate creatively and with initiatives that have improved the process. For example, in Sri Lanka,Uganda, Kosovo, Chile and Argentina there were the Truth Commissions and women did not stop until they were heard and made part of these commissions."
  7. I do believe we would have more peaceful outcomes.
  8. I am sure there are examples, but it doesn't in any way take away the role that women can and should play in peace negotiations, especially in third world countries where women are the primary target of violence in conflicts. Would you not agree with this statement?
  9. What was left out of the op was this: "The Wednesday event, held in a small meeting room at the Ryerson Student’s Centre, was advertised as “a space to voice concerns and barriers affecting students of colour.” The meeting is designed to provide a 'safe place' for non-whites to discuss the racism they experience that are most likely not experienced by whites. I don't have a problem with this meeting. What exactly is the problem of not allowing these two white folks to attend. Seriously, do they experience racism because of their white skin? How on earth would they relate to the participants of this meeting. It is a 'safe meeting', the same term that is applied to victims of rape, violence etc.
  10. The Canucks put on a great tribute to Pat Quinn tonight prior to the game. And fittingly enough, it is St. Patrick's Day. A roster of great players from the Canucks were on hand, Pavel, Kirk McLean, Trevor showed up in his jersey, and many others. And the city renamed a stretch of road near GM Place to 'Pat Quinn Way'. A very emotional tribute for his wife, two daughters and granddaughter.
  11. "The last national leaders’ debate on women’s issues was the only national leaders debate on women’s issues in Canadian history. It was held in 1984." “This marks the creation of a new tradition,” National Action Committee on the Status of Women President Chaviva Hosek said in her introduction to the televised debate, “a tradition that now takes its natural place in the political process of Canada.” That didn’t happen. There were a handful of other national debates on women’s issues, but never with the political leaders. They sent their representatives, and women’s issues slid back under the rock of political neglect. A new campaign 'Up for Debate' has been created by a group of organizations. The top 3 topics up for discussion: violence against women and girls; women’s economic inequality, and women’s leadership, where they want the government to re-invest in advocacy. Only two party leaders have commited, NDP and the Green Party. I can understand Harper's non commitment because of funding cuts to women's groups but what happened to JT? An interesting fact: 500,000 more women than men voted last election. Why aren't we being heard?
  12. "Wherever there is conflict, women must be part of the solution” – Michelle Bachelet I discovered an interesting E-Discussion on women's participation in politics in post-conflict countries. Some interesting thoughts: It's a very good discussion since "Women are still mainly the victims of conflict; their voices still go unheard after the fact and their needs in post-conflict countries often ignored." Some suggestions brought forth: “Affirmative action measures should be established, as part of state policies, in favor of women’s development in each country, thereby reducing interference with and control of the state and citizens to comply. Gender quotas should also be established, with the non-recognition of institutions that do not meet the quota, promoting leadership and financial support, which are considered essential, among others" "Such quotas have assisted women to voice their demands and interests during the reconstruction process in countries such as Afghanistan, Rwanda, and Uganda, among others." I believe that with more women in power, solutions will be found through peace and not violence. Here is an example of a woman in power and the end results: "In Nicaragua we are blessed to still have alive a great woman who became president of this country by ending a very bloody 10 year-long war. As a woman, she brought about a peace dialogue and allowed a hurt people the opportunity to be reborn, to dream again. This woman returned the faith and hopes to an entire country and sent a message to the world that peace was attainable. I know that perhaps there were many factors that helped make this possible, but I am convinced that it was the fact that she was a woman, a wife and mother that moved the people to fight with faith and with the hope to attain peace in our country and to stop killing each other. For this, Nicaragua is proud to have had Violeta Chamorro as president.” You can read more here.
  13. I just saw this, however if you think it looks cluttered and silly, who am I say otherwise! For now, I will post topics in the original categories with an emphasis on the title of thread if it pertains to women I will admit though, it does look silly because it looks like an afterthought towards women. Just like the suggestion of 'women's issues'. My original suggestion was categories on their own, I think. I can't even find my original post anymore. Women in Politics - a main category Women in Science and Technology - a main category
  14. Yes, I can see there are lots and more joining everyday.
  15. This isn't even worth responding to. It is an attack on a suggestion for an improvement to increase membership. You are taking this suggestion personally as far as I can tell. I can't see the list of sub-forums being endless when there aren't that many active posters making suggestions. I really don't give a dam anymore. I'm done offering suggestions to improve this site. Go with the tags! You should probably respect the posters here who comment in this section instead of ridiculing and showing little regard for concerns that are posted in this section. Members post here because they give a dam about this forum. Because of that, show a little respect.
  16. I have not gone AWOL I will post later today when I have more time.
  17. If that's too specific to women than you guys are on your own.
  18. You have missed my point about SEO. It's not about women vs men. It's about women finding this forum.
