BHS From Wikipedia "The specificity of the Red Book came back to haunt the Liberals, however, and much of the next few years were spent defending broken promises. The most notable of these was the Goods and Services Tax, which the Liberals had promised to replace but did not. Critics also said that the Liberals had broken their promises to increase the power of individual Members of Parliament and introducing a national childcare program. The majority of the promises were kept, however. Chrétien famously argued that 78% were honoured, a mark he could live with. Others contest whether some of these promises were kept or not. Some of the most notable promises from the Red Book that were kept was the pledge to cancel the purchase of new naval helicopters, canceling the sale of Toronto Pearson International Airport, reforming Unemployment Insurance, more gun control, and reducing the size of the armed forces with the end of the Cold War. Perhaps the most important pledge kept was that of returning Canada to fiscal solvency." THe 78% was Chretien's number.

Chretien had the ability to talk to homeless people (in his own mind) and he did have a good stranglehold on people in the general public.

Layton Gears Up For Election Fight
Canuck E Stan replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Mirror, maybe where you live they allow 4 hours to vote but in Canada the election act states: Time to Employees for Voting Consecutive hours for voting 132. (1) Every employee who is an elector is entitled, during voting hours on polling day, to have three consecutive hours for the purpose of casting his or her vote and, if his or her hours of work do not allow for those three consecutive hours, his or her employer shall allow the time for voting that is necessary to provide those three consecutive hours. And you must be a Canadian citizen and 18 years of age. And if you don't have an employer, and have lots of time on your hands there is absolutely no reason for you not voting. -
Cities Budget Buoys NDP Support

Sorry, I don't live in Toronto. Government cheques have a tendancy of bouncing to places other than where they are intended. Ever get a UI cheque? I understand they are always send to the wrong people and places. -
Cities Budget Buoys NDP Support

"I don't think that some of the other posters will want to acknowledge that the NDP did something that will benefit all cities in Canada, reduce pollution (and global warming), reduce cost of living for working people, reduce congestion on our roads..." I have to admit ,these wonderful things the NDP have done might be happening "as we speak" where you live, but around here and the rest of Canada it's same old dirty air, cost of living is getting higher, roads are more congested than ever.... Let me know when the NDP benefits come to a city or town outside of yours. These changes(if they ever occur) won't be seen for decades. So how will you know if the Libs will actually implement anything.Lots of talk by the NDP,but for me it's just another page from the RED BOOK. Promises, promises. -

A businessman on his deathbed called his friend and said, "Bill, I want you to promise me that when I die you will have my remains cremated." "And what," his friend asked, "do you want me to do with your ashes?" The businessman said, "Just put them in an envelope and mail them to the Revenue Canada and write on the envelope, "Now you have everything." -
Spar, For your interest, I am not a fan of pay cable or satellite TV. I refuse to pay for trash in my home. A couple of months back I read about FTA(free to air) and as luck would have it a co-worker has the system and is going to set me up with a similar receiver. This not piracy of air waves or costly(except for the receiver and the dish).Cost is about $250. and allows you to receive free to air stations from a satellite and lots of them. Your rural relatives would probably enjoy the quality reception to boot. How much of a subsidy does NPR or PBS get if they have to make pledge drives 3 or 4 times a year.I for one would rather this than handing over a billion dollars to Mother Corp.

Government jobs-Canadians need ont apply
Canuck E Stan replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
theloniusfleabag, Good news, "Yes, Minister" is available on DVD through Amazon. Yes Minister Enjoy! -
"CBC is the only media available in many rural communities (My relatives in Manitoba have limited access to TV news because of the CBC strike). CBC is also the only radio station in Vancouver that has decent news coverage (the other news channel just rehashes headlines between advertisements)." There are more choices today for TV and radio than ever before. You and your relatives just like CBC and that has nothing to do with the availability of news on TV or radio for you to watch or listen to.

Statement by Mayor Here's the link hope it works. "Secondly Mayor David Miller was refering to the computer scam ripoff at Toronto City Hall by right wing or Conservative Councillor Tom Jacobek." Layton cut his political teeth in TO,no wonder Miller is happy to see the NDP in Toronto, with Layton there, he can make up the shortfall in the Toroto budget by getting down on his knees in front of Martin.....again. -
NDP Not Ruling Out Future Deal With Liberals
Canuck E Stan replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"Once again we are going to see an NDP-driven government agenda it seems. This is good because Canadians are more in tune with NDP policies than any other political party." You've been sitting at your computer too long Mirror,I think you've become delusional with your wishes for the NDP. Canadians who work don't think as you do, that's why they vote as they do. -

And now the rest of the news from the mayor of Toronto Statement by Mayor David Miller "And I have always believed that every elected official in every government must have a personal and professional commitment to honesty, transparency, and responsibility." Gosh,we got a mini Martin clone government coming alive in TO, thank goodness the NDP are here to bail them out. -

"the working people in Canada" That leaves you out for sure. -
Yes, Now you list all the NDP prime ministers who made a positive impact on Canada,or even the one's that made a negative impact.Take your time, this is not a test.
-
In modern times "What former Prime Minister do you think had a more positive impact on Canada? " Joe Clark John Turner Kim Campbell The rest had a more negative impact om Canada.

CBC always has the Wayne and Schuster shows to reshow, that's always good for Canadian content.Or how about remaking the Pierre Elliot Trudeau story.......again. Maybe it's time to bring back Country Hoedown or Don Messer. Now we're talking Canadian content.Don't forget my favourite, the Hinterland series....now that's Canadian content at it's best.

Gomery delay likely to push election back
Canuck E Stan replied to mirror's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
At that point(Spring) the "booming" economy may show the cost of high gas prices and the high dollar. This would definately effect Ontario and it's manufacturing sector. Martin would probably want the election sooner than later. -

A politician returns to visit his old school. He's interested in the current exam questions and asks his old professor to show some. To his surprise they are exactly the same ones to which he had answered 10 years ago! When he asks about this the professor answers: "As in politics the questions are always the same - only the answers change!" -
your citizenship doesn't give the right to work in Ottawa So you're tired of working just weekends and you want to apply for a government position in Ottawa that you know you are fully qualified to do.Well if you live outside of Ottawa you can just forgettaboutit. Number 1 requirement is your postal code. The right postal code allows you to apply, not your education, experience or even how great you might be at the job. In order to apply you have to have the right postal code. Here's how daft this hiring policy gets. One job from Casey's list is with Corrections Canada. That department falls under the control of Deputy PM Anne McLellan. But if the Edmonton Centre MP wanted to apply for this position in one of her own departments, she wouldn't be eligible because of her postal code. There's another job with the federal Department of Health, which is currently headed by Ujjal Dosanjh - but he couldn't apply for it. "Any application from Minister Dosanjh would be automatically discarded because he has a British Columbia postal code," says Casey. One job that's being advertised at the moment is for a "materiel manager" for the Department of Defence in Ottawa. "If DND needs a soldier to go to Afghanistan, they will accept applications from the western provinces," Casey points out. "For a safe job in Ottawa, the applications are reserved for only Ottawa-area postal code applicants." You have to wonder, if Ottawa were to get the best people it could to run the day to day working of the government, based on talent instead of postal codes, maybe the government might not be as messed up as it is."

Martin credited for smaller than expected surplus?
Canuck E Stan replied to shoop's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Shoop, you must take it easy - you're taking things too seriously! Some people on MLW are obsessed with the forum and spend all, and I mean all, of their time on this forum (I can send you stats!). Some are not employed, or else are in jail and have little time even for sleep, because they have nothing they are on almost 24/7 and have little else in their lives. Or, they feel it is their calling to inform everyone about what they know (or don't know). While the rest of us have a life, for some this forum has become their life. So Shoop feel sorry for them - addiction is a terrible thing. -
Gomery inquiry set to return to front pages.

When you have a democratic deficient government that is run by one individual , Gomery becomes a refreshing change. -
Ambassador Bridge Corporation
Canuck E Stan replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"So fix it. If the traffic is so heavy, build another link. Once again, am I missing something?" That's the whole issue about the bridge. People are saying that it might be broke,or about to be broke. Let's see the reports so we can make that judgement. Lots of jobs rely on the bridge and if it isn't usable a US billionaire probably wouldn't care less if it fell into the river. Building another link has been the demand of Winsorites for decades with only promises by the Feds being made. This bridge is the gateway to our biggest market and without it Southern Ontario industry would be greatly affected. -

Federal Political Humour
Canuck E Stan replied to Canuck E Stan's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
With all the firing of personnel in the Federal parties lately, Paul Martin decided to make a surprise visit to his office without anyone knowing to check up on his staff. Walking though the offices, he noticed a young man leaning lazily against a post. "Just how much are you being paid a week?" said Paul angrily. "Three hundred bucks," replied the young man. Taking out a fold of bills from his wallet, he counted out $300, slapped the money into the boy's hands, and said "Here's a week's pay -- now get out and don't come back!" Turning to one of the office managers, Paul said "How long has that lazy bum been working here anyway?" "He doesn't work here," said the manager. "It was lunch time and he was just here to deliver a pizza!"
