  1. Indusrty Canada in Major Trouble A massive audit into a federal technology fund is expanding as independent investigators uncover new problems in companies receiving almost $500 million from Industry Canada. So far, the firm currently conducting the audits on a $578,000 contract - Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Consulting Inc. - has identified a group of "non-compliant" companies, some of which have been referred to federal solicitors for a legal opinion. But the precise numbers and other key information has been deleted from documents released to The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act. Emerson acknowledged in June there would likely be other firms caught paying forbidden commissions. The fund has been dogged by controversy since its founding in 1996 to promote innovation in aerospace, automotive, defence and high-tech companies. The government has contended that the seed money it provides will be fully paid back in royalties, but as of January only $95 million of the $2 billion paid out had been returned. This scandal will make Adscam seem like child's play. We've got illegal commissions being paid, companies that get money from the government without any type of return. With only $95 million of the $2 billion paid out had been returned plus nformation is being deleted from the Access of Information Act about the mess. . Let's see how the public will accept this scandal.
  2. Taken from a blog http://www.boundbygravity.com/ Duffy on Newman Mike Duffy spoke with Steve Madely on CFRA this morning and had two interesting observations regarding Peter C. Newman's new book that are worth sharing: 1. Peter C. Newman attempted to get Lawrence Martin to co-author The Secret Mulroney Tapes, however he backed out after reading the letter of agreement that Mulroney and Newman had hammered out all those years ago. Might there be a legitimate legal case in the works against Mr. Newman? 2. All we've heard so far are the musings of Brian Mulroney - Newman has not published the questions he asked to garner the answers he received. An interview, as we know, is all about the back and forth exchanges. Since Mr. Mulroney was usually fairly careful about what he said (and often asked if he was being recorded, according to Duffy) just how much of a role did Peter C. Newman play in riling up the former Prime Minister to the point where he would be so open about his loathing?!? Food for thought.
  3. Any idea of what kind of sex the other 50% are engaged in?
  4. I personally refused to allow my children to "participate" in sex education classes. I did permit them to "attend" these classes.
  5. Rumour has it there will be a book out on Chretien called "On the Make" by Stevie Cameron.
  6. Interesting about Chretien having 3 consecutive majorities.....I guess we learn something new every day.
  7. Mirror, 1. this article was already posted in Goodale: Boosting living standards 2. There is no need to copy the article. We can link to it if we wish 3. You are obvoiusly triying to create some friction and response by calling the government a Right government which I believe is not allowed on this forum.
  8. Lotus, sorry but this joke was already posted on the political joke thread. Got any that are not on that thread add to it.I love a good larf.
  9. I hate to be fowl on this, but somehow I don't think the venue should have been Canadian Federal Politics. Maybe it should have gone into US politics( issue in Chicago) or Moral and Religious issues instead. But hey,
  10. Along with Ralph Gordon Stopps trying to get into a women's fitness club, we have the school board in Toronto trying to create an all black high school.Another interesting development. Black only school in Toronto
  11. I have to question why this is on the Political forum, unless we could try and slant it to government shoving things down the throats of the taxpayer. Or maybe talk about the "fat" in Ottawa.Any other ways to fit it in?
  12. Needing the government to help you is like needing a parachute. If they aren't there the first time you need them, chances are you won't be needing them again.
  13. August, What's this all about? You were right, about all this coming out of the blue.Caught this in the paper this morning that a lot of news stories omitted. "I think she"ll get good historical verdicts," said McWhinney whose book,The Governor General and the Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Governments (Ronsdale), is being published this fall. So it's all about PR for selling a new book.
  14. Study: Canadian poverty rising despite economic boom Looks like Goodale had a lot of work cut out for himself.
  15. August, Like man, that was really a groovy and a far out way of putting it.I can really dig it. Peace and love brother.
  16. Your right MIrror, Union leaders are elected. Now try to follow me on this. Those Elected Union leaders are in charge of the Union money. Still with me? They give this money to a political party because the party will do nice things for them. Can you guess which party they will give this money to? If you guessed the NDP, you are right! Corporations hire their leaders, but are run by shareholders. With me? Corporations make political contributions too. And guess what? They want to get nice things from political parties too. They pick other political parties. If Unions and Corporations both give money to political parties for the same reasons that makes them the same doesn't it?
  17. CBC board's political contribution Interesting to note that 82% contributed to the Liberals 15% contributed to the Bloc 3% contributed to the Conseervatives I tried to verify these numbers from the two sites given but was unable to, so I don"t know if they are valid. But for some reason I'm not surprised by the numbers he has come up with.
  18. Union donations are the collective contributions of hundreds of thousands of individuals True statement, but unfortunately the decision to contribute to a party for their own political gain is done by the head honchos of the unions. All for the same reason any kind of business would do.Unions are no different.
  19. CAW political wing Toronto, Ontario August 20, 2003 Federal NDP leader Jack Layton told the 1,000 delegates, guests and staff that his party is encouraged by the new political initiative from the CAW and vowed to earn their support. "I think it is a very important new direction and it opens up a new chapter in our work together. NDP contributions Update: Ok, we're corporate whores too (albeit less so), but check out the NDP! After my own research, these are the numbers that I came up with: Liberal Party of Canada top donors. 1. $2,974,341.20 55555 Inc. (Paul Martin Leadership Fund) 2. $172,781.14 Canadian National Rail Company (Corporation) 3. $148,257.17 Bombardier (Corporation) 4. $135,889.00 Grant Forest Products (Corporation) 5. $111,750.50 Bell Canada (Corporation) (Including BCE and Bell Globemedia) 6. $106,055.65 Kruger Inc. (Corporation) 7. $105,892.00 EnCana Corporation (Corporation) 8. $104,726.70 SNC-Lavalin (Corporation) 9. $100,000.00 Donald Meehan (Individual) 10. $95,000.00 Power Corporation (Corporation) Conservative Party of Canada top donors: 1. $91,703.9 Scotiabank (Corporation) 2. $70,976.64 Magna International (Corporation) 3. $45,000 Power Corporation (Corporation) 4. $41,015.34 Bank of Montreal (Corporation) 5. $59,655.79 Bell Canada (including BCE and Bell Globemedia) (Corporation) 6. $35,404.10 Telus Corporation (Corporation) 7. $28,359.02 McCarthy Tétrault (Corporation) 8. $25,000 CanWest Global Communications Corporation (Corporation) 9. $22,820.00 Canadian Alliance Lethbridge Constituency Association (Non-profit organization) 10. $20,000.00 George Weston (Individual) and... holy crap, check out the NDP... New Democratic Party top donors: 1. $909,775.00 CEP (Trade Union) 2. $775,919.60 UFCW Canada (Trade Union) 3. $823,289.60 CAW (Trade Union) 4. $374,789.68 CUPE (Trade Union) 5. $791,064.34 USWA (Trade Union) 6. $252,619.60 OPSEU (Trade Union) 7. $219,440.00 Canadian Labour Congress (Trade Union) 8. $205,900.00 IAM & AW (Trade Union) 9. $159,850.00 SEIU (Trade Union) 10. $105,246.40 Ontario Eng Catholic Teacher's Association (Trade Union) So, whenever somebody tells you that the Conservatives are influenced too much by "Big Business", show them that the Liberals receive significantly more in cold cash contributions from corporations. Also, look at the NDP numbers. "Big Unions" have a significantly greater political influence on the NDP than "Big Business" ever had on the Liberals or Conservatives. A substantial problem is that as a union member, one doesn't have much control over which political party to which their union dues are donated. As a corporate shareholder, however, one can always sell their shares. Ok now give me a rebuttal about the CAW not supporting the NDP
  20. Again, you make no sense. Make it another all nighter, brother, your shining beacon of intelligence will give us something to shake our heads about tomorrow. Gotta go now, my life is calling me. "I just never let anything bother me, man. I know myself really well. Nobody's opinion of me can shake my opinion of myself." -Ruben Studdard
  21. Goota Love it.....the Media that is.....heavy duty Liberal. Quebec Tories want Harper to step down "the mutiny is the work of only three former candidates, which leaves 72 others in Quebec." The guy can't take a fart without the Liberal media making a huge crapping story out of it.No bias in the press....ha.
  22. Mirror, the more you post the less you make sense. In this country, belonging to a unionized employer is NOT a matter of choice. Union dues are removed from your pay whether you like unions or not. The more posts I see of yours the more I think you pretend to know about unions or anything union related, but in actual fact you could not possibly be a member of anything that involves work. Keep posting brother, you,re going nowhere Monitor man.
  23. "If a union has negotiated a collective agreement that provides for workers to be let off to go and vote during the working day and get paid for it as well more power to those employees. That soiunds more like what you are upset about. My only advice to you is to join a union where your work conditions will be protected. It sounds like you are jealous of unionized workers and I don't blame you. If you are in a good union like me life can be very good." That's what I like about you brother, belonging to a uniion that's gloats when it rips of the employer for personal gain. Take 3 hours off, vote and get paid for 3 hours. Most people who vote, vote because they feel it's their duty...and they DON'T get paid to do it.What a social conscience you must have.Oh, I forgot, your NDP,your just full of it...social conscience that is. So what union do you belong to, COC-HED-(Canadian Organization of Conscience-Higher Education Division)?.I do belong to a union and your kind make me sick. Constantly talking about the NDP , but ripping off the system, like you have the right to. MIRROR,go to work, get a life, and stop telling people 24/7 about the NDP. Brother, you are all the wrong things the NDP is hoping to stand for.
  24. Goodale talks boosting living standard Senate committee urges tax cuts; Move would aid living standards Seeks forum to boost productivity The Toronto Star, Business Section June 23, 2005 The federal government should cut personal and business taxes over the next five years to boost Canada's living standards, a Senate committee said yesterday. The banking committee also urged the minority Liberal government to establish a national forum including senior bureaucrats, business leaders and academics to find other ways to boost productivity. The forum would be vital to improving the standard of living for average Canadians, said Liberal Senator Jerry Grafstein, chairman of the committee, in releasing the report. "Productivity gains will affect their real disposable income in the years ahead." The report came as a result of "our growing concerns about Canada's productivity performance, its impact on the Canadian economy and its implications for our standard of living and our quality of life that affects each and every Canadian," Grafstein said. As well as the forum, which would have a four-year mandate, senators urged the federal industry department to create a "productivity prism" through which federal policies and programs would be assessed to see what impact they have on productivity. The report also urged Ottawa to Cut the general corporate tax rate. Eliminate the federal capital tax. Cut income tax rates for middle- and upper-income earners. Modify the capital gains tax system. Increase foreign direct investment by eliminating "unnecessary restrictions." Continue to pursue new global trade agreements. Eliminate trade barriers between provinces. Grafstein praised corporate tax cuts that Finance Minister Ralph Goodale has already promised. Is Goodale listening? THe prices will be climbing on everything because of the gasoline increases. where will our standard of living go then.
  25. How is Goodale going to boost the standard of living in this country with all that is going on with gas prices? Our standard is going down, down, down. Canada’s economy and living standards will continue to fall further behind the U.S. over the next few years, a Bay Street think-tank says. "Over the 2003-2006 period, growth in Canada will fall short of that in the U.S. every year, and cumulatively this will add up to about 3.3 percentage points of growth over the four-year period,” Global Insight said. “That is more than one full year’s worth of growth over a four-year period. As a result, Canada’s standard of living will fall from 87% of the U.S. level in 2002 to about 84% by the end of 2005.”
