"Some of the Quebec soldiers facing deployment to Afghanistan later this year will be waking up this week to find opposition to the war right on their doorsteps.

The first of about 3,000 letters mailed by antiwar protesters are expected to start showing up in neighbourhoods around the military base in Valcartier, Que., home to the Royal 22nd Regiment.

More than 2,000 Van Doos, as they're known, are scheduled to depart for Afghanistan beginning in August. "

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Quebec, opposition to the war in Afghanistan stands at 72%.

How can our Canadian military allow an article like this to possibly interfere with Canada's participation rate during an actual ongoing war, where many Canadians have already gave their lives for the country.

Spokesman for the base from Valcartier Capt. Mathieu Dufour says:

"Capt. Mathieu Dufour, spokesman for the base, said Monday he hadn't heard from anyone who had received a letter.

Aside from that, Dufour said, the military will not be comment any further on what he called a "political movement.''

"They can do whatever they think they have to do,'' he said. "This is a democracy.''

"This is a democracy" whatever that is suppose to mean, which in reality demonstrates the weak military leadership that could undermine the participation rate in Canada's military and focuses on why initially is an article of this kind allowed to be made public during a time of war.

Answer...

"They can do whatever they think they have to do,'' he said. "This is a democracy.''

And thankfully we are free enough not to allow the military to curb our press freedoms and fortunate enough that the military has no intention of doing so.

What military are we talking about, the Canadian military or the Quebec military? Who gives the orders? Are Quebec troops under Canadian control or Quebec control?

Nothing like advertising the potential weakness of Quebec troops to be swayed out of combat duty by cheap anti-war protester letters backed by a 72% of Quebec residents who oppose the war in Afghanistan.

The anti-war protesters know where the anti-war soft spot is.

This article should have been banned for the sake of Canadian troops already fighting in Afghanistan whose morale could be affected by military personnel being encouraged to cop out of combat duty for one reason or another.

I'm sure the rest of us all feel better knowing that.

Despite the large hippy-peacenik sentiment among Quebecers at larger, Quebec has also had among the highest participation in military service in Canada. And the "Van Doos" have a long and proud history.

I am sure that the soldiers who receive these letters will save them to use as toilet-paper, and are looking forward to giving Taliban fighters what they've got coming.

Sounds like sedition to me.

Yes. This shouldn't be taken lightly. Actually, I'd like to see something done about this.

I feel sorry for these soldiers. These soldiers have nothing to do with decisions of war. They are soldiers. They are to obey orders.

If letters should be sent, then it ought to be sent to those who can make decisions whether we should go to war or not.

No, it's a he, a White English speaking Christian supporting Canadian.

The minorities on this site are sometimes overwhelming with spite and hate and are totally unreasonable, due to the fact they are unable to handle criticism levelled at groups they could be part of.

And to that I say if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I say amen to that.

Especially when they have nothing relevant to add to the discussion.

In the view of the some, the only good Canadians are those that hate America, hate Jews, hate Britain and hate the English language. Er, sounds like Trudeau and Chretien.

Captain Dufours quote was "This is a democracy" and has virtually nothing to do with 'freedoms' (your addition) and simply means: "a system of government by the whole population usu. through elected representatives" and in Canada this means a very basic level of democracy and basically only includes voting for the government of your choice, wow.

I doubt if Captain Dufour knows what a democracy is, or certainly seems that way to make such a misrepresenting statement pertaining to the word democracy.

BTW- Freedoms has nothing to do with military policy or censorship at a time of war.

I really doubt that after listening to the 'little guy from Shawinigan' and current Liberal leader Stephane Dion and your average French speakers, many who are not able to comprehend more that two English words at a time.

Are these letter bombs ? ...or just letters, because if they are just letters, what the hell is all the fuss about.

Its called junk mail, pitch it in the recycling bin like everything else, or like church knockers on Saturday morning, ignore them.

Wow, and we get our knickers in a knock over a letter?

(I wonder if I am the minority full of hate and spite,,hmmm)

Just another group using our soldiers as polictical pawns, they knew they would get more mileage and press out of sending these letters to soldiers then to thier MP's. personally i think each of the soldiers should respond in kind, only this time with pictures and letters showing the good our troops are doing in Afgan...

We, the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have now done so much for so long with so little, we are now capable of doing anything with nothing.
