Posit Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 Canada's worst Canadian? Sir John A. McDonald. He was a lecherous drunk who used the office of Prime Minister for his own personal gain and anyone that stood in his way paid a huge price. Of course he set the tone for those that would follow him in the position, but I do believe he was the worst of all. Quote

Of course he set the tone for those that would follow him in the position, but I do believe he was the worst of all. How do you seriously put John A. McDonald on the list? There would be no good or bad Canadians without him. He accomplished some pretty amazing things, including the railroad, for which he was criticized for on the "Greatest Canadian" show due to so many paid Chinese labourers being killed. There wasn't excactly a WCB back then. It was a different time. Aside from the 'lecherous drunk" comment, you've described Jean Chretien. Quote

Or is it just a 'stock' insult applied for rhetorical effect? Quote
scribblet Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Are Barbara Amiel or Mark Steyn Canadians? What, for instance has Mark Steyn ever done to qualify as a worst Canadian, and Amiel for that matter, other than that she's married to Black. Mad_Michael Posted May 9, 2007 Report Posted May 9, 2007 Murderers are a dime a dozen and most of them are indistinguishable as Canadians. They could be Brits or Americans and you couldn't tell the difference. To me, the worst Canadian would be someone like Conrad Black - one who tore up his Canadian citizenship in order to purchase a baronet in England. That is just plain ugly on so many levels - just like the man himself. Yes, Conrad's pilfering of pension funds and screwing of shareholders all to pay for a lifestyle to which his abilities were insufficient to pay for does look very petty and pathetic. But it is his pompus lectures and public pronouncements about his brilliance, hard work and business accumen that turn this run of the mill inherited millionaire into a major annoyance well deserving of the hatred to which he is no doubt accustomed to. A classic case of the guy born on third base and acts like he hit a triple. Quote

You obviously don't remember Baba Amiel's days as a columnist for the Toronto Sun. She was a 'necon' twenty five years ago - always in favour of blowing up foreign countries filled with too many brown people. Quote

geoffrey Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 Maurice Strong gets my vote. And he has the Order of Canada. Duplessis was a man of his time. You saw similiar social views much later with people like Tommy Douglas and some provincial leaders in Alberta. His foresight on what unions would eventually do and how they'd destroy Quebec was brilliant. Hardly some monster. Conrad? Conrad added much needed balance to Canadian media and is a brilliant business man. My prediction is that he walks from that trial in the US, it's a big Martha like show trial. There is so much 'reasonable doubt' that no one could possibly convict. Nothing he did was illegal. Unethical? Perhaps a little. Illegal? No. What evidence do you have that Conrad stole from pensions, Mad Michael? Libel is such an ugly thing, isn't it? Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
Canuck E Stan Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Alan Eagleson, now there was a Canadian we love to hate.Eagleson had it all, abused it all, and lost it all. He was a Lawyer,Politician,Hockey agent and promoter. Canadians admired him for what he did for Canada's involvement in international hockey(1972 Summit Series) and at the same time were embarrassed of his racketeering, fraud and embezzling of player pension funds. He lost the Order of Canada and his place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.Eagleson turned from a major winner in the eyes of Canadians into a major loser, literally over night.
