John Stone Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 ............ the road to hell is paved with good intentions - hopefully this won't be an example. Ike is probably looking down and grateful Trump wasn't around to spearhead Overlord! Trump rhetoric leaves much to be desired - he needs to listen to his military experts on this.......... this ain't the stock market! All that said, I do wish him luck - glory to the troops! 1 Quote

John Stone Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 8 minutes ago, paxamericana said: That had its own tragedy. Operation Overlord was launched June 6, 1944, (D-Day). It involved the largest seaborne invasion in history to liberate Nazi-occupied France and ultimately Western Europe. The operation combined airborne and amphibious assaults, with nearly 160,000 troops crossing the English Channel on the first day and over two million Allied forces landed in France by the end of August. Arguably the tragedy was inept World leaders ignoring the red flags leading up to WWII. Quote
Hodad Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 We're shooting down our own drones at the border and our own planes in the Middle East. WTF is going on. @John Stone I'm seeing very little here to signal that this is driven by good intentions, or that Trump has ever done anything for reasons that weren't grounded in self interest. Even now, with troops at risk and civilian casualties he's talking about this like it's revenge for a personal grievance (Iran's attempted election interference). 1 Quote

It is uncertain what type of weapon was used. Civilian technology allows detection of any airborne target. The type of technology employed by military ground stations these days not only detects the target but through crypto, positively identifies the target as friend/foe - foolproof. The same systems are used with manpads and cruise type weapons - in the case of the cruise this positive I.D. allows dwell time within a defensive shield without the worry of being mis-identified and engaged. The so-called, 'shoot down' is difficult to explain as an accident ............... unless it wasn't. The fire control equipment used to launch surface-air (SAM) is extremely sophisticated. ...... The shoot-down incident points toward lack of international co-ordination re: combat air picture or ........... intentional. Very troubling for any combat deployment over an active theatre ...................... x10 low level. 1 Quote

The 'fog of war' is a phrase roughly akin to Mike Tyson's, 'everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face'. The 'fog of war' is tactical When u deploy troops u need to establish an objective - the objective is the goal line. If u fail to reach the goal line you reevaluate the situation - and either claim victory by moving the goal line, and retiring or .......... go even bigger attempting to reach that elusive, 'mission accomplished'. (mission creep) Once the battle is engaged it becomes a political football - the stakes are huge measured against any parameter. Quote

With the bombing of the girls school, Trump's killed about 14x as many children. But on the other hand, only 4 US troops have died so far, so he's lagging behind there. Do you think he'll catch up? And the big question: once all the killing is done and the defense contractors have cashed their checks, do you think Trump will give Iran back to the oppressive Islamic regime the same way he gave Afghanistan back to the Taliban? I guess we'll see which is better when the totals are tallied. 🙄 1 Quote

John Stone Posted March 2 Report Posted March 2 ............. just heard SecState say that the military objective of this op is: 1. destroy the Iranian Navy 2. destroy the Iranian missile / drone cache and manufacturing capability ........ totally realistic and a far cry from the Administrations initial objective of regime change and the nuc agenda. Likely the focus will shortly switch to Gaza - Israel is mobilizing tens of thousands of reservists. Quote
