Nothing has ever been shown to suggest it ISN"T a widespread problem either, and there has been PLENTY of evidence that it COULD be. Which completely erodes faith in the system. 

And on the non federal level there have been cases where there WAS substantial fraud. 

Democracy is only effective if it's believed in and mail in ballots are seen  by both sides as being easy to cheat with.
