Trump is hoping to put pressure on Maduro's fickle domestic military support - hoping for a hostile takeover (coup)

Problem isn’t removing Maduro. It’s what comes after. America has learned nation building is not something it’s good at. Iraq being a similar strong man style led country. Japan, Taiwan, South Korea are successful because they already had established institutions by the time America took over.

And to get any oil out of Venezuela, you would indeed need to Nation Build.

Not really, Venezuela is on the wrong side of the Map. The Chinese can’t do much to help Venezuela. The Russian are bogged down in Ukraine.

It would be a mistake in thinking Venezuela is not strategically important to China  - as is Cuba.

I daresay it will become more important if Trumps rhetoric continues re: Panama / NWP (Greenland)

I'm not suggesting a military confrontation ........ more economic / geo political pressure.

Again both Cuba and Venezuela are on the WRONG side of the map for China. There are several thousand mile of ocean and a couple of Continents in between them. The Western Hemisphere will now and for the foreseeable future remain America’s playground. This applies to the European as well, they have similar problems

We are good at nation building, in a culture that is compatible with western values.

Post WWII Europe, South Korea, Japan…

The issue is that we can’t take a culture / nation that is still tribal and expect them to be some kind of unified Democracy.

Well...yes you can. But it takes an entire generation and as governments change by elections, the "melting pot" has to remain in full effect.

Be that as it may...I don't think Maduro actually won the last election. I believe he stole it. Thus I have no sympathy for him or his regime.

Its so lonely in m'saddle since m'horse died.

I hope Trump is bluffing here for everybody’s sake. Lord knows what could result from an actual invasion. Venezuelans who oppose the regime must be ambivalent about it. Finding support abroad in your fight for freedom also entails siding with foreigners against your own country. Very tricky.

It stands to reason you'd suck at doing this when you can barely do it amongst yourselves.

I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical,

There is something wrong with you. I swear you must be in a mental institution and somehow get computer time or something.

Nope. You're just a really stupid hard-boiled right-conservative and I'm not is all. It's not the least bit complicated by anything else.

It can be Donnie's Grenada.
Maybe this time the war would be longer than the movie. They could prance around waving flags and pinning medals for decades!

Give S America another century to hate Gringos.

Alternatively it’s a practice run for Taiwan. Maybe even preventing Taiwan.
