Perhaps you have forgotten the times that the Canadain anthem was booed in the States. And then there was the time they flew the Canadian flag upside down...

I think you are dreaming. Canadian hatred to the US is palpable. Americans just want Canadians to be their friends from what I have seen. I have never heard once of ANYTHING antiCanadian.

Well I am a Canadian and I like being Canadian. I dont agree with Americans on everything, but sometimes I find Canadian anti-Americanism kind of embarrassing nowadays. I dont mean things like not supporting the American position on everything, or not supporting Bush either. But I mean I have talked in many American political chat rooms and I found the general attitude toward me at first as a Canadian was pretty sour. I thought wow, how mean of them...until I met some of the other Canadians who chatted in those rooms. Then I realized why they felt this way. You know it doesnt really offend me personally, but sometimes I get sick of the classic Canadian jokes about navy and our Canoes or people saying things like "oh you are canadian, eh"...Like I said its not offensive, but it does get old and harder to pretend to laugh at after a while. By the same token I think Americans get tired of the old story about all the people crossing customs into Canada with skis on the roofs of their cars...etc etc. And the whole thing about Canadians being so much more polite than Americans....pfft I am seeing a lot of the opposite nowadays, and even while this is happening the impolite Canadian offenders still flaunt the "we are more polite than you" stance. Polite is not a compliment when we say it about ourselves. Thats tooting your own horn. Canada has its own arrogance and its own brand of sickening "we are better". And the whole thing about Americans not knowing much about Canada...well I have talked to a lot of Americans who know quite a bit, and also....Canada is not well known internationally, anyway. We are a small country population wise and though we are one of the well off countries we are not a huge international force. Its like making fun of someone for knowing nothing about an opera written by an obscure albanian fence painter.

I think pretty much everyone here will verify that Americans have booed our anthem. You don't think that's true?

So what. There are just as many Canadians ready to boo America at any given chance. Seriously, I live here in Canada too. I hear it all the time from other Canadians. I think its embarrassing personally. Its just automatically become a Canadian belief that Americans are all arrogant and we are so much more polite and when Americans travel they all put maple leafs on their luggage for extra good treatment overseas. Blah Blah. If I was American listening to all this crap, I might get a little peeved over Canada too. The worst example...although i know it was meant to be an exaggeration....was that show Due South. Constable Frasier was always being so polite to everyone while the American cop was brash, and Constable Frasier was smarter than all the American cops...blah blah....seriously Canada is getting pretty arrogant and superior in its own way.

I agree. Way too many Canadians seem to have decided that public American bashing is perfectly acceptable behavoir. It is disgusting.

When I travel abroad I find that Canadians are the most arrogant and obnoxious people I run into. It never used to be the case.

Thankfully, most Americans don't know anything about Canada or could care less about it.

True life story, A couple of weeks ago i had a chance to go to toronto with my father for business. In my leisure time there was a Hockey game going on, Junior sports of some kind, featuring a hockey team from Michigan. For those who dont know i was original from Michigan. So I said what the hell and ducked in to watch the games. Well they were playing the nation anthem of Canada and people were singing along etc. then they played the National Anthem for the USA, for the Michigan team, well the Candians started booing. And hurling insults at the American kids. These kids might be 15 or 16 at the most. I served my country in foreign countries, and ive been in some pretty hostile places, were the people obviously did not appreciate us being there. This was on par of being in those places. Needless to say i got out of there and went back to my hotel. ;)

This story (link) is far, far worse. Excerpts below:

Shame

Here’s an appalling story from Wednesday’s Globe & Mail:

Canadians hurl abuse at U.S. hockey peewees

By INGRID PERITZ

Wednesday, April 2, 2003 - Page A1

MONTREAL — A peewee hockey tournament in Montreal became a trip into hostile territory for a busload of Americans who say they encountered such fierce anti-Americanism that they will think twice before returning.

During a four-day visit, boys travelling with their Massachusetts hockey team witnessed the burning of the Stars and Stripes and the booing of the U.S. national anthem. When travelling in their bus emblazoned with a red-white-and-blue "Coach USA" logo, they saw people on the street who extended their middle fingers or made other angry gestures.

On the ice, the Canadian players told their visiting counterparts that "the U.S. sucks" and dispensed other anti-American insults, the Americans said.

"It was a shock to go to a tournament and have kids saying this to us. These are our friends that are doing this," Brockton Boxers coach Ernest Nadeau said.

"We didn't expect Canadian players — especially young boys — would take things to that extreme," he said in an interview.

The 11- and 12-year-old boys from Brockton, 30 kilometres south of Boston, had been looking forward to the hockey tournament in Montreal. But parents who accompanied them said they were unprepared for the depth of anti-American sentiment over the U.S.-led war against Iraq.

*snip*

The trip soured soon after the Americans rolled into Montreal on March 20.

*snip*

The children watched as several demonstrators made obscene gestures toward the bus. A U.S. flag was dragged through the street.

"We felt horrible," Mr. Nadeau said. "How would you feel if the Canadian flag was dragged down the streets in the U.S.A.? This is a country that's supposed to be our ally."

That night, about a dozen families went to the Montreal Canadiens-New York Islanders game at the Montreal Bell Centre, a much-anticipated visit planned months in advance. In a gesture later condemned, the U.S. national anthem was widely booed by the crowd, leaving the visiting American children perplexed.

"The kids were just questioning, 'Why are they doing this?' " said David Cruise, who was there with his 12-year-old son. "It's hard for them to realize we weren't in America any more; we were in a different country.

"I said, 'They're booing our national anthem because they don't like us.' "

*snip*

The visitors say anti-American comments continued when the young players faced off against the Beverly Bandits, a team from Beverly, Ont. U.S. players say the Canadians hurled insults during face-offs and at other times.

"They told us we sucked, gave us the finger and said 'Down with the U.S.A.' or 'The U.S.A. sucks," Mr. Nadeau said. At one point, a Canadian player made a disparaging remark about the United States "and the referee turned around and said, 'I agree with you.' "What stunned us was that the referee, who is supposed to be unbiased, is agreeing with the boys on the ice."

*snip*

The crowd cheered when the man waved the Iraqi flag, and booed the U.S. flag, Mr. Carpenter said. Then the protester doused the U.S. flag in kerosene.

"It went up in a puff of smoke and flames, and the crowd went wild. They were all cheering," said Mr. Carpenter, whose 24-year-old son, a U.S. Marine, was sent to retrieve bodies of Americans killed in the 2001 terrorist bombing of USS Cole in Yemen.

Mr. Carpenter tried to explain the anti-American displays to his children. "I said to my kids, 'These folks disagree with our government, not you personally.' "

As they crossed the border into the United States, cheers went up in the bus. "We were very, very happy to get back home," Mr. Nadeau said.

Why do you prefer that? Am I that offensive to you on the Board?

Hey JBG I didnt realize you were American. I think Jdobbin meant that he realizes this behaviour is shameful and he is glad a lot of Americans dont care about Canada anyway. Like how I said that Canadian anti-Americanism is an embarrassment to me. No one finds you offensive. :)

I live in Buffalo. It is a border city, and I am very familiar with Canada. I get Canadian TV on my cable. No, I have never heard, or heard a report of American booing anything Canadian. As I said, I see Canadian flags on many buildings which have nothing to do with Canada from motels/hotels to business buildings. I have long ago become frustrated with Canada. I enjoy checking into this forum to see what is being said about my country. I have enjoyed reading about your problems relative to language and geography. Being small has its advantages/disadvantages as being bigger has its advantages/disadvantages. I see US policy as an offshoot of its being bigger and having to address an issue. Kind of like being a grownup and having to go to work. Canada, being smaller just doesn't have the same problems YET.

Ya, it has happened on both sides of the border but either way there is no excuse for it. My apologies for the way your kids were treated by my obnoxious countrymen.

You must mean "earth units" -- everyone except the US uses metric. Metric simply makes more sense. I never could understand why America didn't go metric in the 70s when we did.

...jealous much?

Considering that for all intents and purposes, it's the common unit in the US gov't.......
