Lindsay Graham is 100% correct. We need to keep supporting Ukraine, so they can drive the Russian invaders from their land. A weak Russia is beneficial to America. A weak America benefits Russia.

As they say, you and Lindsay Graham will defend America to the last Ukrainian.

The Soviet Union is no more. We no longer face an ideological threat.

OTOH, we live - as always - in a multi-polar world.

As Trudeau Snr once said, we need counterweights.

I do not think that Reagan defeated the Soviets. The fall of the USSR came from Gorbachev’s stated policies, which he implemented.

When dockworkers went on strike in Gdańsk, Gorbachev could have sent in tanks. Putin certainly would have. But Gorbachev did not.  This is what happened.  The idea that a nation fell because of its economy is absurd; it’s never happened in all history. WW II Japan was pounded to rubble, but their government remained in power.  Mao lead a nation of people who were literally starving to death, like 100 million died from starvation, but his government remained. The USSR did not fall because of economics. It fell because Gorbachev permitted it.

Huh...

Couldn't have had anything to do with the hundred million people who wanted to be out from under Soviet control...especially the satellite states.

But ya...over simplification suites you.

The USSR still had the military capacity to crush all resistance and uprising from Eastern Europe.

The point he is trying to make, is Gorbachev implemented reforms in the name of Glasnost, allowing most countries in Eastern Europe to uprise and topple the communist leaders without Soviet intervention.

Reagan wasn't the last in a LONG LINE of concerted Soviet counter measures; George HW Bush was. Duh

We face the threat of a megalomaniacal fascist who dreams of resurrecting the USSR and is taking ILLEGAL steps to make it happen. IF International agreements are not enforced, they MEAN NOTHING.

Ukrainians can surrender anytime they want and ONLY face repercussions from Putin.

Let's let Putin succeed so Xi will know there are no penalties for aggressive land grabs.

Give 'em Manhattan. All the freaks and beautiful illegals can go there and show us all how it's done.

Hell Laura will become the most popular name there in no time. They can paint it all pretty colors and love each other...to death.

Oh it would be grand...

Of course we'll have to set up a perimeter like in the movie Escape From New York. Any pronoun spewing woketard found outside that perimeter gets sentenced to 30 years in a labor camp.

Wrong.

When Gorbachev became Premier of the USSR, Russia did not not technically exist as a country. It was a "Soviet Republic " in 1986.

Gorbachev implemented a series of reforms,  as he realised to USSR could not compete with the Americans,  as the Soviet Union was impoverished and in debt.

The satellites, or "Iron Curtain" certainly existed when Gorbachev took power. However,  he made no effort to stop the collapse of east Europe,  and the overthrow of the communists pupet regeimes in 1989.

The Baltic Soviet republics started to declare independance a year later in 1990. Then finally, communist hardliners tried to stage a coup to reestablish old Sovier policies in 1991, but failed.

Boris Yeltzin took over and declated that the Soviet Union dead, along with communism, and tried to establish a free market economy, while granting all former Soviet republics total or partial independance, as some former republics joined the CIS-Commonwealth of Independant States.

The Kremlin has always been suported by either the Russian controlled Soviet Union, or beginning in 1991, Russia itself.

I said the military. The government was irrelevant by then.
