Thanks, Kimmy, for that inspiring post.

As a Toronto liberal, I find that MapleLeaf and the good forums are the only places where I come into contact with other points of view. That's sad when you consider that productive dissent is supposed to be a mainstay of democracy.

I always try to bring up the conservative point of view in casual conversation if I feel that it's not being well represented and you post will be helpful in that regard.

Aw, thanks. :) It is nice to hear that some people did take my message in the spirit it was intended.

The dates of Kimmy's thread on Babble are Feb 6 and on but here they are Jan 27 ish. What gives?

I originally posted that on Jan 26, toward the end of this thread:

http://www.rabble.ca/babble/ultimatebb.cgi...=35&t=002131&p=

Somebody later reposted it into the Feb 6 thread you mention.

Kimmy: What's happening now?

Well, I got jumped on for neglecting to mention that my ancestors stole the land from the natives. And then there were some Stockwell Day jokes, and then the thread got closed.

Well kimmy, that was a great post. I enjoyed the read. I have not visted many other political forums, but I am really glad that for the most part the posters here on MLW are respectful. There is the odd name calling now and then, but that is everywhere.

Kimmy,

While I enjoyed your post I think you may be a bit off with the separatist thing. I am out in the boondocks in north central Alberta and can tell you that there are a lot of folks that don't like either the feds or the Alberta Legislature trough hogs. Its time for a change.

Where did she go?

I suspect she got fed up with the loonies.

Yes, we all get tired of the insulting people who blame everything on immigrants.

That was an excellent post by Kimmie.

Now, for all those who don't know but feel they should comment anyway. Albertans do tend to put in the hours and work hard. I moved here from Southern Ontario just over two years ago, one big thing I had to get used to was the hours we work. My friend recently moved here and they said the same thing, they had to get used to working more. On average I work six days a week a minimum of ten hours a day, twelve and fourteen hour days are not unusual at all.

Of course the usual crowd loves to chime in with their snide and condescending remarks about how they work just as much when they have no idea how life is and how things work in Alberta. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you wish to comment on life in Alberta then get your ass out here and experience it, unless you're afraid of hard work that is. Chances are that if you did experience life in Alberta you wouldn't want to go back to where you came from.

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario seem to lead in hours worked, with Alberta 12% or so above Ontario:

And if we annexed Ottawa to Quebec, Ont 's rate would soar !

30 hours a year is not a difference. What is that, 36 mins a week?

Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario seem to lead in hours worked, with Alberta 12% or so above Ontario:

Stats Canada

Alberta was 4% above Ontario in those who performed a "longer Work Year"

Alberta was 5.9% lower then Ontario in a "Standard Work Year"

Alberta was 2.1 % higher then Ontario in the "Shorter Work Year"

Which for 2004 is pretty much a wash. I expect those who could put in the extra hours did. Those who wanted to work less hours did. That is a good set of options for a labour market. There isn't alot of difference. I also have many that I have helped with placement in Sask, and Alberta. They are enjoying their new positions, higher pay, often similar or easier work, and more hours and benefits. The Employers appear to be well mannered and fair.

Ontario is just starting to take advantage of the 60 hour work week and averaging. This provides little incentive to work longer hours, but does give the company the break on Overtime pay after 48 hours.

That said, the rapid increase in part time work created out of full time positions will likely lower the hours even more, even though people are holding two and three job positions. It is not always possible to sustain the extra hours with such diversity, as opposed to working more hours in the same location/position/field.

I would be interested in seeing the 2008 study on hours of work. 2004 in Ontario was the last of the boom years.

I am impressed with the sample size used in the previous study.

For the record if I could earn $200,000 an hour I would probably only work an 3/4 hour a year.

And I would still break for lunch...

Not true.

We also blame things on Liberals and pot-heads.

I know that it is against Maple Leaf forum rules to refer to a poster in a thread title, but rules are made to be broken. To wit, I have no idea what rules are for references to other forums (fora?).

Kimmy wrote a long, fascinating post on rabble.ca. There was a sort-of critical reponse, but the post was largely ignored. Life goes on. The best laid plans of mice and men.

Not quite. I copy Kimmy's post here.

No, it wasn't ignored; Michele closed the thread. I've had my own pleasantries on Babble; under about 15 screen names.

Hi guys! Thanks for remembering me. Of all the things I've written on message boards, the message August quoted was probably the message of which I'm most proud (or at least, the one which was the least wasteful use of time ;) ) so I am glad that people liked it.

I haven't been around for a while. I have been working extremely long hours and have a lot going on in my life right now. And, I had gotten tired of a lot of the content of the message boards. There have been a lot of one-note posters who try to make everything about their pet cause, and that's so tedious. And summer is for much better things than politics! :)

But as we approach elections both at home and south of the border, there'll be a lot to talk about and I am sure I will be around a lot more as we head into fall.

Very true. I agree that this is the most tedious aspect of Internet forums: they're an invitation to one trick ponies or fanatics with a single, obsessive agenda.
