And it will take MUCH MORE than "one day." 🤮

In those days, you could walk across the border at Checkpoint Charlie and see for real what a dictatorship really.looked like, and it was a gritty, gray, old, chilling experience.  You discovered underneath the lined, weary faces of people wearing four and five layers of worn clothes and rough boots all the same dull black color, that the eyes watched you, no.matter where you went there in East Berlin, the eyes watched you. When the Wall fell and the East Germans joined the West, there was a collected sigh, then tentative steps from dozens...tentative because doing it before the Wall fell would have gotten you shot and your family sent to Russian Re Adjustment prisons for a decade or more.   These brave ones, stepped over the borderline and were given simple gifts of bread, cheese, beer and wine, clutched them to their chests and then hid them under their coats as they shuffled wearily to their bus to go to the housing we provided them.
