CdnFox Posted September 1, 2023 Report Posted September 1, 2023 https://archive.ph/g61MS In a first-of-its-kind pilot project, Saskatchewan is picking skilled immigrants based on their country of residence, raising eyebrows for deviating from Canada’s selection system that has otherwise been open to all regardless of race and nationality. In August, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program created six draws with the goal of inviting 542 skilled immigrants in dozens of occupational backgrounds to settle in the province as permanent residents. The catch is only those who are living in one of these eight countries can qualify: Czechia, Germany, India, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. “This is a slippery slope that undoes the progress we’ve had with bringing in a points system,” says University of Western Ontario political sociologist Howard Ramos, who studies social justice and equity. “What is very unique here is they’re being as explicit as they are in terms of saying, ‘We want people from these countries.’” Until the late 1960s, said Ramos, Canada had an immigration system that welcomed immigrants from countries that were “culturally similar” to Canada, to exclude Chinese, South Asian and non-European migrants. CdnFox Posted September 1, 2023 Author Report Posted September 1, 2023 Can open - worms everywhere.... Frankly - i don't really see a massive problem with limiting immigration based on how compatible the culture of their country of origin is with ours. But i don't think it should be that OR the points system - i think it should be that AND the point system. Maybe just assign some points based on country of origin - you get bonus points from being from an 'easy to integrate' country? That means if you are an excellent skilled worker who speaks english or french from another country then you could still qualify - and if you're a relatively skilled worker from an 'easy to integrate' country you don't need as many points to get in. I think the idea has some merit. Trudeau has kind of broken our integration system by overloading it, we need to address that somehow Quote There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

There is nothing slippery about selecting immigrants . It is long overdue for Canada as a whole and I hope it starts with Saskatchewan and ends with Canada. I don't agree with India to be in the list as we also need to select based on cultural compatibility which excludes those people who have no respect for women's rights and equality and wish to turn Canada into a middle eastern dictatorship. August1991 Posted September 4, 2023 Report Posted September 4, 2023 (edited) Under our Constitution, provincial governments can select immigrants. "Who gets to be Canadian?" This is a shared power. Edited September 4, 2023 by August1991 Quote

IMHO, we have a wonderful federal state. Provincial governments can select foreigners to come to live in Canada. The federal government decides who is a citizen. ==== Nowadays, the federal government selects any foreigner destined to Quebec or otherwise with a family connection - wife/husband/partner/child - grandparent. For other foreigners, the federal government selects by a point system. Quebec in its point system gives preference to anyone who speaks French. Of course, some just cross the border. Aristides Posted September 4, 2023 Report Posted September 4, 2023 Just pointing out that Quebec has its own immigration department. I don't know that any other provinces do. Quote
