What is a "Registered Indian"? Tax exemptions? Fishing rights?

Can someone clearly explain when a person is "registered"?

And what are the tax exemptions?

It means you're a registered member of a specific band. Like your SIN. You need it to vote for Band Councils etc.

If you shop at a store on the rez, you write your number on a form and it gets rung up with no tax.
If you walk into any off rez, you pay tax like anyone else.

It used to be (maybe still is) if you were a Band member and worked at the mill on the rez, income tax wasn't deducted.

Check the box on an income tax program that you're a registered Indian and see what comes up.

I believe that if you are buying something that will be deliverd to the res or is for use on the res then that's the exception. I might be wrong but i'm pretty sure that's the case

Oh and of course if you buy gas from a res gas station, even if you're using it off the res obviously.

They use those cards off the rez also to save on taxes.

True. We used to do that, had codes for delivered to/serviced on reserve.
We even had an Internet service where the POP (where you connect to Telco's service) was in a Band building, so customers weren't taxed.

My kid worked at a mill on the local reservation, he had income tax & benefits deducted but his friends did not. AFAIK they still got CPP & EI deducted.

It's the 'enable card' . . . . lets the holder enjoy cigarette and tire sales.  Many eligible for the 'enable card' would rather cut their hand off rather than have it hold an 'enable card' . . . . life is not what it seems.
