According to polls people had a pretty decent faith in gov't going back quite a while. It's more recently it's been shaken.  But they've always had faith in the democratic process.  they believed the gov't elected WAS elected.  this is starting to challenge those beliefs.

I guess that explains why Harper felt compelled to bring in a Federal Accountability Act.  And how's that been working out btw?

If i've only been here a short time how do you know i haven't felt that way even longer than you have

Because you said you have all these polls that told you everything's been hunky dory up until just recently. Like your fetish about always having the last word this feeling of your's is just a need to be seen as having had the first word too.

In any case - this is specific to this issue. If people don't believe their elections are secure then they will not believe in the legitimacy of the gov't.  If they lose faith that the gov't is elected from a clean democatic process then we see things like we've seen in the states.  That is bad.

There's nothing to suggest Canadians have any concerns about the security of their ballot such as we've seen in the US, this issue is about campaign interference due to influence peddling and politicians looking the other way when that influence benefits them.  It's far more related to the concern Canadians had in the wake of SNC Lavalin affair which wouldn't have been possible if we had an Accountability Act with real teeth.

A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.

I will never understand why liberals like you and justin are so eager to sell  out our country with zero fight. Other than it happens to benefit you right at the moment which shouldn't matter.

Yes, it is garbage but lobbying, overt or covert,  is a age old honoured method of peddling influence, be it by a company , organization or country. "Professional lobbyists are people whose business is trying to influence legislation, regulation, or other government decisions, actions, or policies"

This age old honoured method has no real honour and needs to be halted?

Its so lonely in m'saddle since m'horse died.

IO get tired of telling you I am  not liberal, perhaps it is the reading comprehension=or some other disability along with your inability to play nicely with others.

Bottom line, like it or not, liberal or conservative laws, The chinese have played us for decades and will continue to do so.

100% correct.

Halted? You can certainly try. That is what all laws are for, to halt misdeeds....do they get results they were intended for?  A little.

How exactly?  I've been suggesting concrete measures for years and partisans of all stripes have adamantly said it's impossible.  Virtually all the people you're lashing out at say the same thing.

Yeah I've never been able to understand how 40 million people find it impossible to keep a better eye on 35 Cabinet Ministers.

Again I ask, what's your plan?

I appealed to the base nicely but the liberal supporters never got excited about it.  As to the act and the other things he did to increase transparancy, they worked pretty well. THe budget officer has corrected  many falsehoods over the years and as you're aware snc happened because of harper's new laws preventing back room deals like that,  unfortunately some of it was just ignroed or dismantled by the libs, such as the judge selection process,  But it was a good step forward, hopefully we'll see further gains in the future.

But - that's not really about confidence in our 'gov't' exactly.

Because you said you have all these polls

I didn't say that at all , and certainly not before you made your original comment.

So - you still can't keep track of your lies.

36 minutes ago, eyeball said:

There is much to suggest it.   Seeing as you asked about polls:

https://globalnews.ca/news/9518923/canada-china-election-interference-poll/

People believe that china is making a serious effort to undermine our democratic process, and even more believe the gov't is not protecting us.

And again - stories like the one here get traction because people believe it's likely that china had a role to play here, whether they did or didn't.

So you were wrong.  Big surprise.

If people lose faith in the democratic process they will lose faith in the legitimacy of the gov't and as we've seen to the south bad things start to happen.

I know,  - you wish your precious liberals could continue to get free money and help from china to win elections forever.

Bottom line, like it or not,  laws make a difference.  If you make what china is doing illegal then they are forced to work much harder to do less.  And that protects our democracy.

Doing nothing and saying that it's just fine if the chinese 'buy themselves a few ridings'  (provided the money is going to the libs) and there's no point trying to stop it  is just stupid.  It leads to a bad end

Your attempts to excuse justin's inaction is beyond pathetic.  Laws make a difference. That's why we have them.  There needs to be some new ones to address this.

Ahhh the ole cdnfux still at it....calling people liars again.

Never said laws did not make a difference, that is your reading comprehension issue again.

We have thousands of laws, many broken every day. One more won't change that LOL

Never said "Doing nothing" either. Once again, your reading comprehension has reared it's head LOL

Never once made attempts to excuse anyone. You should get professional help for the reading comprehension issue you have LOL

Yeah you did. Now you're trying to backpeddal.  Your whole thing has been how laws won't make any difference so why bother. That was in direct contrast to my position of laws DO make a difference and we need them.

Oh - so now we're back to laws don't make a difference :)  LOL you can't keep your lies straight for a single post? Wow :)

Laws DO make a difference. Laws DO change things. Laws CAN reduce the amount of bad behavior.  I know you want to claim otherwise but it's Just Not True.

Sure you did.  You've said no matter what we do they'll just do what they want, it doesn't make a difference.

Sure you have. That's your whole thing here -  I said Trudeau needs to pass those laws and you said "Naaaaahhhhhh, he's fine, laws won't make a difference, this will happen anyway,  do you think china will just stop because there's a law??? etc etc"

Oh - and that's when you weren't pretending we were all racists for picking on china when ther'es all these other countries doing it taht you coudn't identify and had no evidene of :)  :)  :)  :)  :)    LOL  - yup not defending anyone at all :)

And you always do this. You take a position and when you realize it's indefensible you pretend you never said anything LIKE that when you clearly did.  :)

Laws make a big difference. And they're necessary to restore the faith of the people in our democratic process.  And there is NO excuse for justin not to be moving forward quickly with at least the basic ones.

It's the same thing every time.  Whatever you say, he'll interpret it in the stupidest way possible so he can argue against strawman points that no reasonable person would actually make.  He then shits the thread up gloating about "winning" debates he had with himself.  What's especially funny is how many of his own threads he ends up derailing with these fragile-ego performances, and it's over and over again, repeated in almost every thread he joins/creates.   ?

I doubt very much that you have. You're not even talking about the same thing now.

As to the 'how', you pass foreign agent registry laws as a very first step. So if you're acting in teh interests of a foreign nation you must register with the gov't. That wipes out a lot of these 'chinese police stations' and such, and anyone acting on behalf of china or in it's interest who didn't register can be arrested and charged

That would include anyone here communicating to put pressure on a politician to vote a certain way or the like if it benefits china. Or any other nation.

Laws like this have proven effective elsewhere. They make it hard for china to send people over here because nobody wants to get arrested and doing so would be embarrassing to china.

Other changes can follow that.

In the end i'd like to see something independant of the gov't that has the power and authority to investigate any foeign interference in the political process and produce reports to apporpriate all party committees rather than just the PM and to have the power to lay charges without the pm's permission.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!   Wow  you guys really HAVE formed a support group :)

If you don't lie, i don't call you liars :) That's pretty simple.

He said laws wouldn't work and it was a sign of bias that we'd blame the Chinese :)  Then he said he never said that :)   :)  :)

And in the end he's pissed because he knows he was wrong - laws do make a difference and there's nothing bias about pointing out the chinese activity recently.

You tend to do the same - although your big 'tell' is when you try to deflect from something dumb or indefensible by shifting the conversation to some minutiae you think you CAN win on after you realize you've screwed the original topic.

Obviously i'm living rent free in your heads :)  Which amuses me.  Seriously - all you have to do is make better arguments and you wouldn't have to go through this.
