The Speaker of the House takes over if both the POTUS and the VP are out of action, yes, but having the VP hung from a hastily erected gallows outside the Capitol building would have thrown a wrench into the smooth running of the accepted protocols. No, it's the same. They anticipated disaster from any source. natural or domestic. It's not like it was 'new' - succession issues are part of the military, a huge part of the old monarch system. they knew someone could kill their president and or vice (and of course that would later happen to the president). So mechanically there's no difference. Quote It's hard to see how the US government would have carried on as is if Trump had been illegally installed in the White House by a violent mob. I doubt "oh well" would have been the reaction. I don't think there was any possible way that could happen. Like i said i believe the speaker would take over i don't think even if they'd had pence 'swear in' trump that it would have been seen as legit. Within a day or three Biden would have been president. It’s the stuff of fiction writers. Would the US Military and Secret Service have actually allowed Trump to remain President if the mob had swarmed in and killed half the Democrat legislators and the VP? Or would the military intervene and say, “Sir, we are putting you under arrest”? We could have seen a revolt inside the US military. I think that, given the circumstances, if Trump somehow remained President, there would have been widespread rioting, substantially more destructive and violent than the BLM protests. There was a TV show a while back where the US government was wiped out and Kiefer Sutherland got to be President. They didn't have a "Designated Survivor" on January 06. I bet they change their protocols now. Quote

The us has all kinds of 'succession' rules in place. Remember - it was formed at a time when war, civil unrest and rebellion, plauge and sickness, and the occasional outbreak of witchcraft were all serious issues that were very present things and there was no 'secret service' really that had the tools to fight that. So they planned for pretty much everything. Saying 'what if trump was president after jan 6" is a little like the old game of 'what if germany and japan had won the war and taken over america' etc. Fun mental exercise i guess but it has no basis in reality as far as outcomes go. I enjoyed "The Man in the High Castle" enormously. The book. I never saw the TV show. Quote
