Well would Russia really directly attack a multinational NATO Force that includes all of NATOs nuclear capable members (not Latvia specifically but the other Baltic states have UK, US and/or France). Would Russia really gamble that NATO or the individual member countries would not respond maximally to such an attack ?  I doubt Russia would take the chance

but if you look at the Russian special mission submarines such as the Belgorod

they clearly have a grey area response in mind

seabed warfare would likely be the initial contact

when the Russians start severing under sea communications, power lines & pipelines

NATO has in fact already initiated this activity with the Nord Stream

then Britain & Italy went to war over Ethiopia

I think often the war is intentional at least by one side. Nuclear war is a different ball game though, call me naive but I believe rational actors would not let that happen. 
 

I think the oddity of the 21st century is this “limited war” model whereby despite everything we are still allowing and arguably even supporting trade with China and Russia even as we are posturing our military to oppose them.

there is a stalemate in terms of an interpolar exchange between Russia & America
