The case for a mandatory tracking app

Smartphone penetration in Canada is about 75%...and far less in many other nations.    Would all citizens and legal/illegal residents be required to have/purchase phones for app tracking ?

Buy one for them. Everyone should have one in any case.

If the government wants me to have a cellphone, I hope they pay for it. The only people who ever call me are those nice people at CRA who warn me about that pesky warrant out for my arrest and the microsoft support who tell me my windows computer has been hacked.

Another trite comment. There are indeed government agencies that monitor civilians. There are indeed major businesses that monitor your behaviour. The reasons  as to who gets monitored and why are not always known to you if ever. Your ignorance as to who surveilled you is your choice. You choose not to see and be smug about it.

You welcome state control over us all because you choose to not see the history of the world that shows what happens when people take their freedom for granted and are willing to give it up based on a fear they have been fed.

What does history teach us about contact tracing apps?  Are you referring to the refusal of the Europeans to use them during the plague, or how they resulted in total world domination by a tyrannical despot with some coding skills during the Spanish Flu pandemic.

That just agrees with the point I made earlier.  Everyone is okay with being watched.  We all shop, we all use the internet, we all have smartphones and credit cards and good behaviour cards with any number of mini big brothers who want our money before someone else gets it.

If you want to avoid trite, tell me specifically what you think Trudeau is going to do with the information.  Tell me at what point the contact tracing app sneaks a tattooed number onto your arm.

No it does not mean wecard ok with it. You do not know that. Some people are, some are not. You assume everyone who gives up their priivacy knows they have let alone is not concerned about it. Using your reasoning anyone who drives a car can be assumed not to care about the air pollution it causes.

That is being trite and smug. You just keep throwing put subjective assumptions without pausing to see any possible issue or consequence or for that matter opinion if it isn't assumed by you.

No worries....this idea fails at several levels.

It fails for smartphone penetration....it fails for compliance....and it fails for enforcement.

Therefore, it fails at promised efficacy.

Recent events in Canada demonstrate that government can't even handle basic public safety notices for kidnapped children or mass murderers.

I have no idea what it will be limited to.  I don't even know how they work.

I do know that no-one has any privacy anymore.  I don't have a phone, but my employer insists I use one of theirs.  I have an LSD locator and a safety app on there that always know where I am. No tattoo yet.

Privacy is over rated to a certain degree. How are my medical records of any interest to anyone but my Doctor and myself. If they were printed on the front page of the Globe and Mail, would that have the slightest impact on my life, good or bad? I can't think of anything in my life that would be of interest to anyone...except for those times on Saturday nights in Calgary...but then nobody knows about that except...

It's the assumption that our governments are already so powerful that we're utterly unable to subject them to any sort of similar monitoring that's really pathetic. And these paranoiacs have the nerve to accuse other people of surrendering their freedoms without a fight.

It could also make stalking you by some sob easier to and therein lies the point. This assumption technology will be only used positively is the issue.

I spent years trying to track and imprison sex criminals. Many argued we had the technology to place implants in pedophiles. There I'd also technology to implant in pedophiles a chip in their brain to zap them with a painful electric charge everytime they had a sex urge.

Of course most people would want that done to pedophiles. Now tell me once used  on them do you really think it  would stop and only be used on them?  Given your knowledge of history and the violation of human rights across the world you really think such technology would not expand in use? 

Can you tell me know who has access to your personal info and why? I doubt it and I am sure if you knew you would be quite concerned with just who is accumulating and why.

There comes a point when you have to have faith in the people you elect. Life is full of risks and we could mistakenly elect a sneaky bastard who could wreck it all but if we go too far the otherway and lose that trust in each other and in government, it would be almost impossible to function as a society. It is all a trade off.
