Kerfuffle Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 (edited) This is absolutely horrible. It is an architectural marvel and filled with an inordinate amount of priceless history. The fact that it is a cathedral is completely and totally irrelevant. Thankfully there are no reports of injuries or deaths. Yeah, well, I'm sure "God" will get all the credit for that.... OftenWrong Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 My first thought is, why no fire suppression system? Don't they have fire codes in that country? A structure as valuable as this certainly deserves to be protected. Far as I recall. the Vatican bank has got lots of money. 1 Quote

There are supposed to be very strict rules in the EU re: construction/renovation. But, not here, apparently. However, work had ended for the day (before the tourists were given the boot @ 6:45) and any use of fire is strictly controlled on such a site...ie...no lighting big fires on the roof at quitting-time. As for rebuilding Notre Dame...okay...fine...but it'll not be the same of course...and its main job was tourism, these days. And the lost art, books, etc...irreplaceable. Stefan Molyneux had an interesting video today on this...having some experience in construction in the EU. Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

Apparently crowds were to blame for the fire trucks being over two hours late. Damn tourists and gawking Parisians just wouldn't let those vehicles through. "Regardez! Camions de pompiers! eyeball Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 I wonder how much the Catholic Church will contribute? Bankers' best guesses about the Vatican's wealth put it at $10 billion to $15 billion. I guess they have to guess given how secretive the Vatican is about its wealth.
