I still don't get how Nylander wasn't traded yet. I don't believe he'll live up to his contract and may be very hard to trade later on in his contract, rather than this summer. Especially when Marner needs to be signed. Nylander is nowhere near Tavares, Marner or Matthews in terms of... everything actually. He's a liability .

Nylander had a real down year, trading him now is selling low, he's not going play that poorly again, so his value is at it's lowest point. Wait until he gets hot, then trade him, if they are going to trade him.

Ocho-Ocho will easily live up to a 6.9 cap hit, the way these RFA's are going to get paid, Nylander is going to seem cheap in a couple years.

That does make him more trade-able, but I don't see Dubas trading him.

They're not going to bring Muzzin, Barrie nor Ceci back, all three are rentals, so the cap situation opens up again next summer, but I think the Leafs are also prepped for a lockout.  Muzzin, Barrie and Ceci are simply stop gaps while the cake bakes down on the Marlies.

The Leafs are loaded up for this year with Own Rentals, in the off season they will be in a mini-retool mode.

Knowing Dubas, they no doubt see the replacements as being internal, Dermott, Sandin and Liljegren.

By the by, Tyson Barrie will wear a Berezinesque #94 for the Leafs this year, Two Phones leaves and all of a sudden everybody has a neck beard and a high number.

Zach Hyman is actually more likely to be thrown overboard than Nylander, Dubas is all about skill, Nylander is not the kind of player he will be jettisoning.

Hyman on the other hand is going to get overpaid in UFA by some team, so I think the Leafs will walk away; thanks and good luck.

The future Leafs are on the Marlies, they are grooming Mason Marchment to be the next Hyman, so I think the future depth chart looks something like this;

Korshkov - Matthews - Nylander

Marchment - Tavares - Marner

Johnsson - Kerfoot - Kapanen

Moore - Engvall - Mikheyev

Tymashov - Petan - Bracco

Robertson - Brooks - SDA

Rielly - Dermott

Sandin - Liljegeren

Greenway - Rasanen

Kokkonen - Hollowell

Andersen

Woll

Scott

People are sleeping on Mason Marchment, he's got huge NHL upside as a puck retriever net front presence and super pest, pretty much as fast as Hyman on skates, bigger frame, and he's got a better shot and softer hands than Hyman around the net.

Babs likes big, well, the Leafs are going to get big by internal development;

LW - Mason Marchment, 6'4" 200+ lbs  (undrafted, late bloomer)

RW - Yegor Korshkov, 6'4" 200+ lbs   (2nd round pick, 31st overall)

C - Pierre Engvall, 6'4" 200+ ibs   (7th round pick)

RD - Eemeli Rasanen, 6'7" 220+ lbs  (2nd round pick)

LD - J.D. Greenway, 6"5" 215+ lbs  (3rd round pick)

G - Joe Woll, 6'4" 200+ lbs (3rd round pick)

Leafs trade Sparks to Vegas for a fourth round pick and David Clarkson's LTIR contract.

Which means the Leafs can combine that with the Nathan Horton LTIR to go $10 million over the cap once the season starts.

Maybe they will have to wait for the season to start before signing Marner to fit Mitch Lindros' bloated contract in.

Might be room left over for J-Gards as well, seeing that Retardiner still hasn't signed anywhere and is known to prefer to stay with the Leafs if possible.

With the Leafs adding Clarkson's contract, it makes total sense that Marner hasn't signed yet, especially if they plan on resigning Retardiner as well. None of this means Marner is pulling a Lindros, no indications of that yet, I wouldn't jump the gun based on self-serving drama queen media speculation because they need something to talk about all summer to keep the fans interested when there is nothing else to talk about.

Actually I get it now, what it is, is that they have to be right against the cap to get the relief of the Nathan Horton LTIR, but to squeeze Marner in they can't be right at the cap, so what the Clarkson contract does is but them right against the cap, then both LTIR contracts can be combined into one big 10.55 million LTIR, and that's the Marner contract basically.

Not saying he isn't gonna pull a Lindros, but if he doesn't, the two contracts together fit a Matthew's like cap hit under the LTIR relief.

He might pull a Lindros, but based on his actions so far, the media is just playing up the likelihood of that to spice up the story. If Marner is smart, he won't pull a Lindros, I'd honestly be surprised if he did. At this point, they might even have a deal worked out in principle already but they just can't sign it right away, and media might literally be making a big deal out of absolutely nothing.

Award winning use of Garret Sparks, since he definitely wasn't coming back after Babs fired him, so he was going to have to be waved anyways and somebody would have taken him.

David Clarkson's contract oddly the gift that keeps on giving, praise the Hockey Gods.

Yeah Dubas is doing a great job of stock piling late round picks and selling off guys who would have left for nothing by turning them into assets instead. The Leafs have 11 picks in the 2020 draft now.

A+

The Leafs total effective cap room right now with LTIR minus Phil Kessel salary retained is exactly $13 million

Just enough for Marner, with some left over for an addition at the trade deadline.

Also staves off any offer sheets less than $13 million + AAV

Plenty of cap space, LTIR FTW.

To be cap compliant to enter the season, they will have Dermott and Hyman on IR, so they wont be against the cap, then they'll have to wave their depth players for a day, that would give the cap space to fit the Horton and Clarkson contracts in, then place them on LTIR, giving the Leafs an effective $90 million cap.

Leafs acquire RHD Jordan Schmaltz from the Blues for LHD Andreas Borgman.

I like it, Schmaltz is just a depth piece, but so was Borgman, RHD for LHD, good pick up.

Dubas trades Rosen, Borgman and Sparks, brings in some RHD's, and Babcock is like, "WTF? I love Dubas naow!"

Not sure how much Babs is going to like Schmaltz, Schmaltz is a Hakstol guy tho, Hakstol was his coach at North Dakota, so that probably does give him a pretty good shot at making the team, since he only has to beat out Justin Holl.

Schmaltz never really got his shot in St. Louberta, they wrote him off as a bust, but still could have some upside for the Leafs, or if not on the Leafs,  he'll be a star player on the Marlies

He shoots right. Babcock loves to not have to play lefties on the right side. Now if an RHD gets hurt, he isn't forced to play a LHD at RD, he can simply call up Holl or Schmaltz from the minors.

No risk, cap hit is only $700K,  I even think it's a two way contract, at the very least he replaces LoVerde on the top pair for the Marlies.

He should be able to beat out Justin Holl though, at least to start the season.

Avs only have Rantanen, Kamanev and Greer left to sign. Everyone else under contract, $16.4 million cap space to work with.

Nice to see Brandon Saigeon finally signed, I was getting a little worried there for a second that they were just going to let him go without giving him a shot in the AHL.

There is a chance Schmaltz could break out with the Leafs, I think the Blues took him too high at 25th overall because he was a Schmaltz brother, still, he was at least a mid 2nd round pick prospect.

The Blues never had any room for him with all their RHD's, Parayko passed him on the depth chart, Parayko being drafted in the 3rd round the same year, but he's never really got a legit shot in the NHL, the Blues played him for 20 games last year, but this was early in the year when they were in a death spiral, so he didn't get much of a look before they sent him down again.

He is good at the AHL level, he was the 1RHD for the San Antonio Rampage.

He's definitely got skill, he's a high end puck mover, didn't really fit with the style the Blues play, the Leafs quick up stretch pass defense is more his style.

Hampus Lindholm, 6th

Matt Dumba, 7th

Derrick Pouliot, 8th

I'm trying to squint Jordan Schmaltz into being an effective 6D stopgap at a moneyball price.

Not that hard actually, people assume because the Blues didn't give him a legitimate shot, he must be a total bust.

That may not be the case tho, he's certainly a bust as a 25th overall pick, but that doesn't mean he's not an NHL player.

The main thing is softness in his own zone, he's kind of like Calle Rosen, he's all skill, he's got elite skill, the issue is more getting caved in on the forecheck.

I think he can make the team if he shows up and has a good camp, again, all he has to do is beat out Justin Holl, and it's not like Holl is a beast in his own zone.

It's more squinting to see him just filling the role the whole way, he's got pedgree, he's got wheels, if it was any other team than St.Louis I think he would have played more.

I do approve of this Michal Neuwirth experiment particularly at league minimum PTO.

Could end up being a Jonas Enroth situation where he can't stop a beachball, but could also be the next C-Mac bounce back scenario as well.

He's only 31, it's not like he's done, and in the past, when he was played as a backup, say 30 games or so, he's put up decent numbers.

He has upside at 700K, and he's certainly better than Michael Hutchison by a significant margin.

Pretty sure he's going to come in and take the backup job with relative ease.

Unless Joe Woll is just too good to send down, which, I'm bullish on Joe Woll, but I don't think he's quite ready yet, Neuvirth could be a nice stopgap, I gotta feeling.
